Old East Boston newspaper goes online

The Northeastern University library has started digitizing copies of the East Boston Community News. They recently uploaded copies from 1971. You can look at individual copies of the newspaper or search for specific topics.

Little City Hall
Great historical stuff. I see one of the issues mentions the Little City Hall program. I remember the "Little City Halls" from the 70s. They were essentially trailers set up in neighborhoods for people to conduct City Hall type business, a lot of which can just be done online these days. I registered to vote in a little City Hall in the 70s.

I remember this paper, they also had articles written in italian. Looked through it last night, and looked at the old business ads in the paper. They also had a section where reporters from the paper would randomly interview a resident and talk about current local regional or national news.

Love the choice of headlines. NIMBY opposition and massive public works cost overruns were just as much a part of Boston 45 years ago as they are today.
In 1971, $45M was a lot, eh? Nowadays that buys us a whopping 372 feet of Green Line extension.

Good on you Northeastern! The Community News was the incubator for a number of up and coming writers in the 70's, including Mike Rezendes, who'd win the Pulitzer prize as a member of the Globe Spotlight team covering the Catholic Church sex abuse scandal in Boston, and Renee Loth, Globe writer and editorial page editor. Looking forward to browsing future issues...

I remember the East Boston Community News, it was a welcome alternative to the East Boston Times which was written by people who seemed to have no clue that it was no longer the 1930s. The East Boston Times still exists and they still have no clue it's not the 1930s. How are these fossils still alive? Even further into the 1930s is the East Boston Post Gazette. Someone please tell them that World War 2 ended quite some time ago.
there used to be several other 'Community News' papers
They were not a chain, but all organized on similar principles: left-leaning non-profits that were managed, written, and edited entirely by volunteers. They came into being because people were dissatisfied with the established local weeklies' news coverage. Besides East Boston Community News, there were also Dorchester Community News, Somerville Community News (which I wrote for in the 1990s) and the still existing Fenway News. I'm probably forgetting a few others.
