How John Connolly might have handled the education issue in a State of the City address

Connolly, who ran against Marty Walsh in 2013, writes that he agrees with a point Walsh made last night in his speech about getting both BPS and charter schools working together:

I appreciate Marty Walsh making BPS and education the centerpiece of his speech and his call for less divisive rhetoric. I also appreciate the parents like Heshan Weeramuni who rallied for BPS funding last night. I see a lot of good people at work. At the same time, nothing will be solved if we continue the toxic debate where one side demonizes and blames charter schools for all that ails BPS and the other side simply calls for a cap lift and doesn't understand the great difference BPS makes every day.

If we want to solve this, parents from BPS and charters need to work together. We need to recognize that an honest discussion about BPS's budget has to include a lot more than just a discussion about charter funding. You can't solve BPS's issues if you don't have an honest discussion about the costs tied to facilities issues, empty seats, the contract, and transportation.

Really thought this was a joke, until I clicked the link. Why yes, Roque "Rocky" de la Fuente is on the ballot.

The Commonwealth, ladies and gentlemen!

Your comment adds nothing to the post..

Iis it a deliberate attempt to make the comment thread for this post harder to read so that people have to scroll down? Or just a general lack of regard for other site users?

EDIT- I mean, you don't have any stake in the Boston public school system as a resident of Cambridge, right?

If we want to solve this, parents from BPS and charters need to work together.

No offense, but why is Connolly's statement even relevant? Work together? Is anything more cliche? To end gridlock in Washington, Democrats and Republicans must work together. To solve crime, police and the community must work together. To solve the pothole problem, motorists and DPW must work together. To improve the MBTA, management and union employees must work together. Enough!

For so many reasons. He knows the BPS and its shenanigans like very few folks do, yet he is a fully committed BPS parent. How many kids do Marty and team have in the BPS? Answer: none. And why won't his senior team live in the city? I'll give you one guess.

As somebody who actually voted in the 2013 election, as somebody who has a kid in BPS, as somebody who knows that Connolly has kids in BPS and as a Boston taxpayer, I was interested in what he had to say, even if I might not fully agree with it. That you find the call for working together boring or trite tells me you haven't been following what's been going on with BPS and at least some parents over the past few months. Nothing wrong with that if you don't live in Boston, but sometimes I do post stuff that really will only be of interest to locals.

But I have to problem with him pontificating on educational matters.

And since he did a good job not sounding partisan, I have to tip my hat to him.

Too bad we didn't elect Connolly. He isn't tied to the union hacks like Marty Walsh.
