Something familiar about new Chinatown hot-pot place

New Joy Luck Hot Pot Restaurant in Boston's Chinatown

In addition to retaining the old pagoda-ish overhang and lights, the new Joy Luck Hot Pot Restaurant is keeping the red and yellow colors of the McDonald's it's replacing at the corner of Washington and Kneeland streets.

You know I was down there just a few weeks ago and did not even notice. Are the pagoda phone booths that are/were next to the McDonald's long gone?

never thought I'd live to see the golden arches in any sort of decline. Well they are....sort of.

They are almost all gone at this point.

The phone companies didn't want to keep maintaining them, so they sold them to store owners, who were free to set whatever price they wanted for using pay phones. Calls that had cost 25 cents suddenly went up to 50 or 75 cents or more. Then, of course, cell phones became popular, so not many people ever needed to use a pay phone any more. It's an interesting marker of the time setting of a movie or book when a character has to find a pay phone to make a call.

I like this type of subtle little tribute. Fun touch.

Kudos for not copying all the ugly, cheap, prefab boxes like too many other newer buildings / residences in town.

What? That building has been there forever, they didn't build a new one or anything...

I've been around forever, too. I remember when the Combat Zone was fun to black out in!

The hot pot logo looks a little bit like an upside-down M as well
