Storm takes out Tenean Beach
By adamg on Mon, 02/08/2016 - 11:30am
Tenean Beach? Where's that? MPS shows us it's completely underwater this morning.
Morrissey Boulevard is, as you might expect, closed due to flooding.

There's no surfin' on Tenean Beach...
...there's no surfin' on Dorchester Bay...
Now we know
Now we know why there is a playground there.
Nice sea-level rise resilience they got there.
Is that playground going to need toxic cleanup?
I'd guess probably not, but just checking.
People swim near there
The harbor water is usually okay. The sediments are not likely washing in with it here. It might be a problem if the area is built on old fill and there is erosion to that level, but this is otherwise just going to rinse the area a couple of times in the next day or so.
Very few people ever swim at
Very few people ever swim at Tenean - it's the most polluted of the Dorchester beaches on a consistent basis. The dog-walkers at the park along the Neponset alone contribute enough E. coli to make the beach un-swimable on a regular basis.

People actually swim there
People actually swim there all summer long (when the tide is right). People even swam there on January 1st. I can't imagine the dogs at Troy's Island contribute significantly to the pollution, I'm sure it is more from the Neponset run-off.
Looks much better, now that
Looks much better, now that the tide has gone out!
brain trust
World class engineering professors and students at least 5 local universities, but we can't figure out how to solve this.
Solve what?
Solve what? High tides?
Good luck with that.
Solutions
The "its too late for this" solution: don't build in coastal flood plains or on artificial fill. Nature,uh, finds a way...
The "its too expensive" solution: raise the City! Or at least the infrastructure along the immediate coastline. I won't even bring up off-shore barriers...
The "solution": spend money on climate change studies, say there is no budget for the follow-up work, and repeats complaints about engineers every time the City floods! Rumor is we will be hearing this one more often in the future.
Raising a city?
Couldn't be done.

That "beach" is literally
That "beach" is literally like a toilet....In fact, I'd rather swim or boat IN a toilet than at Tenean...In the summer, on a GOOD day, the only thing that drowns out the smell of urine there is the smell of feces....
Ugh
i'll give you $20
to come swim in my toilet
