No mention of it in the article, but given who this is, I have to wonder.

Former Boston mayor Ray Flynn lost consciousness while driving home from a workout Thursday afternoon and crashed his vehicle ...

Is there a hearing with a physician and the rmv when this sort of thing happens? Because it's pretty friggin dangerous for the driver, and other people.

Just wondering what the logic is for that statement Ron? Is this some kind of ethnic perjorative towards the Irish or some statement on Raybo's supposed history?

I haven't yet found the original Globe article from 1997, but ...

The Globe vs Ray Flynn
Article on His Drinking Stirs Ex-Mayor's Wrath

Whether or not the Rome-anian Ambassador was drinking or not, we all know that Ray has been known to hoist a few and a few more from time to time.

No need for the Globe article link.

but I'm just glad to see Ray Flynn only damaging a small part of the city instead of the whole thing like he used to do.

You didn't see the middle class being pushed out of the City when he was Mayor. He wasn't selling out the City and taking developers, restaurant groups and bar owners cash like the administrations after him.
Say what you will, karma is a bitch.

The city was kind of in the doldrums during much of his tenure and had a murder rate roughly four times today's. Not his fault, but let's not forget what was going on in Boston in the 1980s.

Was abandoned in 97. That had a lot to do with out of control speculation in Boston.

and I believe the year was more like 1994?

Like when someone mandates that firefighters fix their own trucks to hook up his brother with a better job and then some firefighters die due to faulty repairs?

i got called 'racist' here once for laughing at frat boys/their ilk for celebrating their "irish heritage" once a year by getting wasted on st patricks day

if theres one stereotype i'll adhere to believing in, its that white people will jump at the chance to get offended about race. whether its a perceived slight against their own, or more laughably somebody elses

at a funeral. I had only seen pics and video of him. I was impressed by how healthy and physically fit he appeared to be.

Basketball particularly.

Not surprised he's holding up well.

Oh I see where you're going with this one... the driver is someone with an Irish surname in Southie so the guy must have been drunk. Elderly people can have medical conditions which cause them to lose consciousness.

I can honestly say drinking was my first thought too.

Not everything in life is about race.

Some people just know others better than you.

The former Mayor has a reputation of being a heavy drinker. Nothing to do with him being Irish.

I'd say it is simple elderly impairment, or aging plus medication.

I'm in shock that he was still driving at all - the last time I saw him in a public appearance he was very much impaired, but didn't seem to be drunk.

I'm glad that he isn't badly hurt, didn't kill anyone, and will probably just stop driving now before he kills somebody.

MA desperately needs to retest people every 5 or 10 years - or require a doctor's note to renew a license. Even 50-somethings are passing out and causing extreme accidents.

My mom still drives, and she's 9 years older than Raybo.

Age is a serious risk factor, even if it affects people at different rates. My MIL is in her 80s and usually does fine when there isn't a temporary medication issue. My aunt made my dad stop driving in his late 60s.

But that isn't the point.

The point is that everyone should have to demonstrate medical fitness at renewal. There is no reason not to have a physical now - they are pretty much free health care. You should have a doctor's note to renew as a matter of policy - at whatever age - because people can be impaired by cardiovascular disease, diabetes, etc. These increase with age, but are not limited to any age group.

Remember that huge crash in Somerville with the burning cars? That was caused by somebody passing out - a woman in her 50s.

Sorry, but....My Massachusetts State Trooper cousin will gladly confirm for you that there is much, much MUCH greater threat and risk of serious injury or fatalities from the moonbat/wingnut yuppie idiot moms texting their friends to arrange a racquetball game at the club, while driving their Escalades down 128 at 75mph than there is from some old bat driving her Buick from the senior apartment complex to Demoulas' and back....

Ask literally ANY cop what they fear most....Making a traffic stop and getting shot by a gang bangin' drug dealer from the 'hood?....or making the same stop and having "Jen from Wayland" (example) plow into them in the breakdown lane, cuz she was oh-so-very busy texting little daughter Debbie to please not stay at Abercrombie too late - since ex-hubby/daddy will be picking her up for the weekly visit and .....

(WHAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!)

"Oops, Sorry Officer......um...Officer??"

can work out like a 26 year old. He's always on the go and these things happen to 76 year olds. I guess Ray didn't realize he was 76 until yesterday. Hey Ray at least it wasn't a storefront! Glad no one was hurt.

I met raybo in there a few times while he was still mayor. yikes.

I thought it weird that the Globe article didn't mention him just being honored by having the BRA rename the Boston Marine Industrial Park after him.

http://www.bostonglobe.com/metro/2016/02/08/walsh-asks-bra-rename-marine...

up

Because the crash article was written before the BRA board voted, and they'd done a big story on the renaming a day or two earlier?

Do the cops tweet photos of all accidents now?

If you follow Capt. Greland for awhile, you'll see he does post photos of dramatic things he runs across in his district. Regardless of who the driver was, this was a pretty dramatic crash.

(ring-ring)...."Good morning, Boston Police District C-6...Captain Greland here"......

"Greland? Commissioner Evans here".

"Good morning sir. How are you today Commish-"

"Quiet!! Listen, Greland, how would you like to make it 'Patrolman Greland' again?... No? Then leave the *%#*ing Twittering to the parakeets and pigeons. Understand?".....

"Perfectly, Commissioner".

"Good".

They're encouraged to do this (Sgt. Taxter at D-4 is another big tweeter). But notice that Greland doesn't give out a lot of info - he tweeted the crash photos because they were interesting and dramatic, but notice he didn't give out the name of the driver.

Flynn, 76, said that he was parking on the street ...

Parking?

HOW FAST was he parking?!

I mean... look at the photo, for God's sake! The dents. The bricks and lumber piled on the car. The shattered windshield. The missing (auto)body parts.

Was he trying to recreate the "park the Bluesmobile in front of the Chez Paul" scene from Blues Brothers?

It was cold yesterday. I hope the police did their best to cover up Mr. Flynn.

Nicely done.

The Glob has reported that the ex-Mayor had a defibrillator implanted.

So we can all stop making the drunk jokes now. I mean you can continue if you want to but this story doesn't justify it.
