A fire reported around 7 p.m. at 72 Perthshire Rd. quickly went to three alarms and caused an estimated $500,000 in damage, the Boston Fire Department reports.

Fire Investigators determined the cause as careless disposal of smoking material. Point of origin; 2nd floor rear porch.

Firefighters went into "Mayday" mode when one firefighter's alarm went off, but he was found and accounted for.

The fire was knocked down around 7:50 p.m.; it destroyed the entire rear of the 2 1/2-story house.

The department reports four firefighters were taken to the hospital with injuries, none considered life threatening. No residents were injured..

This thing went up QUICK. Scary seeing these buildings go up like they're built of tinder...

One of the tenants in the house lost his dog too. Very sad.

What's worse is that no matter how much it's emphasized every year, careless smokers+horrible building materials=uh-oh

If the tenant was smoking without permission, his renters insurance (if he has any) is going to get sued by the landlord's insurance.

If the landlord did allow smoking, then I have to ask why in the world would you?

It's very difficult to ban smoking from a building... lawsuits, etc. And, if someone decides to smoke anyways, who is going to stop them? Enforcement of no smoking is not something many people want to deal with.

And they use them. When someone smokes in the building, a notice goes out to all of the tenants asking everyone to stop smoking. If it persists, the offending unit has a letter stuck on their door and they are fined. Their lease also is not renewed. The rental company uses the fees to re-prime, then paint the walls in the offending unit.

The rental company also has a policy enforcing noise restrictions. If any unit has a complaint against them for offensive noise, their lease is not renewed.

It takes a little education and work up front but it can be done....And with regard to your comment about lawsuits: smokers are not a protected class:

Thanks for catching that. It's what can happen when you're rewriting (even a short) story several times in quick succession, alas.
