Channel 25 lobs salvo right at Ed Harding

Just one day after WCVB announced the over-caffeinated Ed Harding and 10 o'clock doyenne Maria Stephanos would anchor a new 10 o'clock newscast, 10 o'clock pioneer WFXT dropped a news bomb and announced it was going to launch a newscast at 4 p.m., with Elizabeth Hopkins and Blair Miller at the anchor desk and Kevin Lemanowicz on weather.

So who's going to be first with a 3 p.m. newscast?

NECN

NECN already has a 3:00 PM newscast: NECN Today. But (according to their broadcast schedule) at that hour, it's a repeat, not live.

Now with the leverage of NBC behind it, I wonder if they could start NECN2. All news - around the clock. Just like the early days of CNN2 which became CNN Headline News.

There are at least four local networks with a newscast every ~4 hours + 24/7 on NECN + Four 24/7 national cable news networks.

Instead of replacing TV news the internet has made it dirt cheap to produce "content" which is why there more broadcast news now than ever. New broadcast automation system reduce the need for the stations to hire any additional staff so they see no reason not to keep adding broadcasts.

Wasn't it jsut a few years ago that news stations were cutting back because owners so no revenue in newscasts? Not they're expanding news right and left. What's changed?

I wouldn't think any of the OTA broadcast network news operations are technically profitable, since a news operation is basically all expense, no direct revenue (no one directly paying for it).

But they do obtain some revenue by way of the commercials.

I think all those car ads during the news actually keep the broadcasts in the black. (Just my guess, not a proven fact.) Without the news, where would car dealers advertise? (OK the radio, but that's a dying beast too.)

Ch 7 already has a 4:30 news

Ch 7 (WHDH) already has a 4:30 news that starts then and runs through 6:30 pm at which time the network broadcast news picks up till 7 PM.

As to profitability, at that hour they have many options for syndicated programming or reruns to pick from. You have to guess, ay best, that they see more $$$ in adding these broadcasts. Indeed the advertising dollars may be higher than what they get from syndication.

Frankly speaking I dislike the Fox news programs. Too much side banter and editorialization from the anchors. I don't need them telling me how horrible something is, nor do I need their shock and awe to sway my opinion. Nor do I need them explaining how silly something is. Maybe I don't see it that way - or maybe I do. I have a brain capable of making up my own mind.

It was bad enough when they imported Delagarza and she tried to continue that silliness. Thankfully she is gone to obscurity with her silly syndicated late night talk show. I have to wonder why CH 5 even carries that at night on weekends.

Now Stephanos is doing the same thing.

Too much of Fox's morning show banter has crept into the news.

I expect Ch 5 will loose its high standards and not win all those broadcast awards that they are known for if this persists.

Cronkite gave the news and let the viewers decide. That was emulated nationwide as the gold standard. That has been lost.

What in the name of megahertz is Bill Fine thinking?
