Pair of Celtics fans ejected after they try to get a Trump chant going during a game
By adamg on Sat, 03/05/2016 - 9:05am
Elvis Jocol Lara reports on an incident at last night's game between the Celtics and the Knicks, who have a player from Spain:
Jose Calderón commits a foul and these two guys start yelling "Trump," and "build the wall," while trying to start the chant among other fans. I shut that shit down right away. They started throwing F bombs at me and telling me to go back to Mexico and to make some tacos. Eventually I got sick of their shit and got their asses thrown out.
Thankfully these were the only two assholes that tried it. Other fans joined me in telling them to be quiet. ...

Thank
you.
Trump is going to look into that.
It is baffling to all how he and his supporters could be considered ugly racists.
Not to mention stupid beyond
Not to mention stupid beyond belief seeing as how Calderon is from Spain and not Mexico. Or are we building a wall to keep out the Spanish now too? Not too sure where that one would go...
My mistake
My mistake
Not sure what you're talking
Not sure what you're talking about, but it's definitely not anything I said in my previous comment about Trump supporters being stupid beyond belief for the "build the wall" comment at a Spaniard.
nah
Spain won't pay for it.
Is your comment a joke?
Or are you uneducated on the subject of Hispanic last names? Maybe I read it wrong but you do realize almost every Mexican has a Spanish last name? A former Mexican president is named Calderón. Many Mexicans have that last name....
Perhaps he knows more about Knicks players than you
No offense, but he wasn't referring to the fact that the player has a Spanish last name but the fact that the player is, in fact, from Spain.
I know
He's so ignorant by not knowing anything about the place of birth of this basketball player, right?
Racism at the Garden
I have season tickets to the Celtics and frequently attend other sporting events in Boston and Foxboro. The Celtics crowds are definitely more diverse than any of the other 3 major sports. It is not uncommon to see women wearing Muslim head-coverings or men wearing Sikh turbans, in addition to a wide variety of other races and ages.
That having been said, I have heard some booing when Muslims or Sikhs show up on the jumbotron. Not a lot of booing, but definitely the racists are out there. During warmups on the Monday night game vs Utah there was a guy in a Trump shirt on the jumbotron who was both cheered and boo'd.
Some of us are old enough to remember the hateful vicious racism at Fenway Park, directed at Red Sox players like George Scott and Reggie Smith. I think the situation is much better than it used to be in Boston, but racism still rears it's ugly head all too frequently.
lol
muslim head coverings
im partial to jew hats, myself
Lol to you too
I am not aware of the differences between hijabs, burkas, and Muslim male head coverings, so I decided to use the term headcoverings.
If I was referring to what Jews sometimes wear, I would probably use the same term because I cant spell that word that begins with a "y". Can you spell it without looking it up?
Yamaka
Yamaka mistake, yapologize, yamove on.
yes
i absolutely can
just because you have no idea doesn't mean i'm equally ignorant
i mean seriously, did you really think that just because you don't know something that it would be reasonable if other people don't? we aren't talking about quantum physics here. and i'm not suggesting that you should necessarily know, but to assume that other people don't based on your own level of knowledge is kind of wtf
I'm Jewish. I'm fine with the
I'm Jewish. I'm fine with the term "Jewish headcovering" because there are a wider variety than one thinks. Men wear what is called a kippah (from the Hebrew) or yarmulke (from the Yiddish), at the most basic. Also, many Jewish women also cover their head and those can range greatly, from ordinary hats to ornately tied scarves.
There is such diversity in religious garb that just saying "group's version of x" should be fine. The original poster may have seen many women wearing many different kinds of garb.
Doesn't mean you're ignorant?
OK, if you say so. What does it mean that you went with "jew hats"?
If you actually know how to spell, say, yarmulke, why did you not demonstrate by actually writing it?
I was a kid at the time, and
I was a kid at the time, and George Scott and Reggie Smith were every bit the heroes to me as Jim Lonborg and Yaz. Scott's biography is reviewed online, and although it discusses his troubles with the managements of multiple teams he played on - including the Red Sox - there's nothing in the review, other online articles, or my memory that supports your claim. And it's not like racism in Boston and in the Red Sox ownership and management hasn't been examined with a microscope by the media over the years.
Maybe your baby boomer memory is failing you, and you're thinking of the nororious Elk's Club controversy that came after Scott and Reggie Smith's time. That would be Jim Rice and Tommy Harper.
Nope , not bad memory, it happened
I haven't read George Scott's biography and according to you, neither have you . But I heard the racist comments myself. I don't know if Scott heard them. I was in the right field grandstand so he may have.
As far as the comments being directed to Reggie Smith, I did not hear them but a friend did, and we discussed it at the time and I have no reason not to believe him.
I've been going to Fenway since 1965, 5-20 times a year, every year . A few I heard racist remarks being directed at Jorge Posada of the Yankees. He probably didn't hear it because he was at bat and the yelling happened in the bleachers.
Just because you were not aware of it, or didnt hear it, doesnt mean it didnt happen. Try again.
I've been attending
Red Sox games for 30 years in the bleachers. The stuff that I used to hear there was incredible -- calling Jose Canseco a "wetback", regularly calling opposing teams' outfielders "faggots". Luckily, this happens with far less frequency than it used to, but for some just add alcohol and you never know what they will yell.
They were ejected for making comments
that were irrelevant to the game and that were disruptive to others. THAT's all that matters here.
If you want to read into this and argue that these idiots are bigots or racists or whatever, then you are exhibiting precisely the type of PC behavior that Trump is against and feeds on to gain support.
The T word
Just so I understand the' T' word is a code word for racist? On the other hand I hope that Mr Calderon files civil rights charges against these two clowns.
Its not a code word, its the
Its not a code word, its the name of a racist coward. Its like yelling "David Duke" or "Hitler" at a jewish player, then screaming racist bs at anyone who asks you to stop that isn't a white christian.
For the amount of
money that Mr. Calderon is grossly overpaid for bouncing a ball in a children's game, he should be able to just IGNORE it.
But hey, let's sue people for no legitimate reason - it's the American way!
"I got their ass thrown out"
What a tough guy, aka "i had another grown man handle a confrontation for me."
Intelligent guy
He wanted to stay and watch the game, so he didn't handle the confrontation himself. He did what any intelligent guy would do and contacted security. You see, if he handled the confrontation himself as you suggest, he might have been thrown out too.
That's the kind of thing a tough guy like you wouldn't understand, but something intelligent guys do understand.
actually
as somebody who is both, sometimes you just stand up for what you want and then handle the consequences anyway.
but, obviously as a self described intelligent person, i'm sure you're aware that people can make a decision that might have an adverse consequence- but be ok with that result.
In my experience, guys who are tough don't need to tell you.
In the comments section of a blog, no less.
Question for you
What porcupine crawled up your ass today? You're really on a roll, picking a fight with absolutely anyone you can with no apparent purpose.
Your response to a conflict situation is clearly based on hormones, emotion and romantricized notions of what is right, rather than on common sense and what's legal. OP did, in fact, "stand up" by telling the yahoos to knock it off. When they demonstrated that they were as stupid as they were antisocial, and more than willing to let their lack of impulse control rule their actions, OP had several choices:
1) Verbally escalate, possibly leading to 2), almost certainly leading to diminished enjoyment for OP and everyone in the area
2) Start pushing and shoving and swinging, possibly leading to (pick as many as you like) getting ejected, getting injured, injuring one of the yahoos, injuring an innocent bystander, getting a ride in a cruiser with followon legal consequences
3) Call security and let them handle it, almost certainly leading to increased enjoyment for OP and everyone in the area
Remember what you're talking about here. This is a couple of asshats interrupting others' enjoyment of a sporting event with their stupid, racist, irrelevant bullshit. There are places where shouting back at such asshats makes sense -- like a political forum, or a street demonstration. This was not such a place.
Maybe he just wanted to watch the game without having to
listen to a couple of screaming bigots. Violently confronting them would have gotten him tossed out, too.
Trump supporters have already demonstrated their thuggishness in the face of dissenting opinions (like beating a Black Lives Matter activist who had the temerity to attend a Trump rally, for one incident of several). I don't think that's a tactic that law-abiding citizens should embrace.
"Tough Guy"
Going anonymous to call someone else a tough guy...
He acted like an adult. Fist fight int the middle of the Garden means jail.
All of the normal people out there need to have ZERO tolerance for this racist cowardly crap.
Having them thrown out was the right and ballsy thing to do.
Zero tolerance
Exactly - that's why trump, duke, sharpton, jackson, farrakhan, etc should all hang on the same tree branch, everybody would be much better off.
yep
They contacted an employee who is part of a liability insured team specifically there for that purpose, with immediate radio contact to other employees also there for that purpose. What a wimp...shoulda just gone over there and kicked the guy out himself.
I'm not up on the latest slang
But are "Trump," "build," "the," and, "wall" now swear words that children and families at a sporting event have the right not to hear?
These two pieces of white trash are idiots for suggesting that a skilled high earning NBA player from another country (who pays a bunch of taxes as, I presume, an NYC resident) should not be admitted as a taxpayer and entertainer into American society.
But those who would seek to have them ejected from a sporting event are also complete tools. Mind your (expletive) business and watch the game. My God, the Garden is an awful place to watch sports.
All that having been said, immigrants in this country have the exact same problem that police have: A great public illiteracy about who they are, what they do, and what they represent. The folks who endorse Donald Trump for president (I'm not among them, I voted Bernie) are clearly not educated about how immigration works in this country.
And you know what? I'm not either. I don't know anybody who understands how ICE decides who gets in and who doesn't. Riddle me why my brother had to marry his college-educated legal assistant girlfriend to keep her from getting sent back to France, while the Tsarnaev family got to stick around to collect welfare. I don't oppose welfare programs, but the strike zone for who gets to come in, and for who gets to stay, appears to be all over the place.
Funny how that works. Just individually say the words
"kill", "the", and "mofo", and they don't seem like a threat at all. What, are you going to accuse me of assault just because I string them together? Free speech, maaaan; free speech!
Will. You're too smart for yourself.
Do you sit in front of a full length mirror admiring your new ascot when you type nonsensical bullshit like the tome above?
Slim, don't bother. Playing with tools is best left to the carpenters. At least they'll have a shed or something when they're done.
I agree and disagree
The Garden Code of Conduct prohibits among other things "disruptive behavior", "abusive language" and "interfering" with "enjoyment of the event". Garden Security determined that the racist a-holes deserved to be thrown out and I agree with the ejection.

As far as US immigration policy, you are right. Inconsistent, incoherent and hypocritical, with exceptions for some and not for others. My boyfriend is an immigrant and unfortunately I am well aware of the problems as is your brother.
will latulippe
how is that pro-segregation stance working out for you
I gotta disagree with your analysis, there
I think the turning point that ended up with these guys ejected was when they started swearing at the guy who wrote this up. Regardless of race and politics, that is a no-no. If the guys just left well enough alone, it would have been a case of idiot fans doing dumb shit. Should yelling ignorant things at players be allowed? Probably not, but I would think that the TD Garden security would not have been called in at the beginning of this. My guess is that copious quantities of alcohol was involved in this incident.
Context is everything
No, they're irrelevant bullshit that individuals at a sporting event have the right not to hear, regardless of their age or their family configuration. That's not what they bought a god damned ticket to see.
Anon
In regard to your comments on "Racism at the Garden", you do realize that Islam is not a race.
DUR
Ya got him there.
Yes and no
Islam is not a race, but a lot of anti Islamic hate, in my opinion, is just as much about the skin color as it is about religion.
Has any of this been verified by Garden or Celtics officals?
In light of the myriad hoax hate crimes reported in recent years, I'm just a bit skeptical when someone encounters perceived "hate," resolves the problem himself and announces it on social media, with plans to write a column about the entire situation in El Mundo. Has anyone from BPD, TD Garden or the Celtics verified this?
With Mr. Trump getting 50% of the Republican primary vote here in MA, and 20,000+ Democrats taking the time over the winter to leave that party, there is a possibility that some Trump supporters may be as profane as Elvis Jocol Lara who peppers his post with "shit," "asses," and "assholes." Remarkable that he would be offended by "F-bombs" with that mouth. If the incident did happen exactly as described, perhaps these two Trump fans may not even know that Mr. Trump supports legal immigration for those with marketable skills like Jose Calderon.
Videocameras on every phone
When things like this happen, it is highly probable that it landed on video from about 20 different angles.
Just like that video of some guy screaming at a black woman at a Trump rally landed in the hands of the Marine Corps and got his dumb ass cut from the Marines and blacklisted from the reserves. Cameras are everywhere.
