UPDATE: One of the two men died.

Shortly before 10 p.m., two men were shot on Mt. Auburn Street at Longfellow Road, right outside Mt. Auburn Hospital.

Cambridge Police report both were taken to local hospitals with serious injuries.

About half an hour later, Cambridge firefighters responded to 44 Coolidge Ave., a few blocks away, for a car fully engulfed in flames.

Mt. Auburn Street in front of the hospital was shut for the investigation. The hospital itself remained open, but people heading for the emergency room had to use a back entrance.

if available. I know Cambridge police can be very reticent to release crime info, such as who was shot, who did the shootings if they know, names, ages, etc. It would greatly help to have concise data and statistics broken down on the who and why of shootings in and around Boston and other cities.

Was this a drug deal gone wrong? A robbery? We deserve to know the motive behind these crimes.

and take the 73 bus, or bike past there, daily on my way to and from work. It would be nice to know whether this was people with a pre-existing beef who happened to run into each other, or a mugging, or what else might have occurred.

We don't "deserve" to know specifics. We were informed that it happened & where and that the police responded. Specifics are what the justice system uses to deal with/solve a crime.

There were at least 4 news vans at the scene this morning (around 8:00). Maybe that will result in more news later today. Or not--they all seemed to be filming two officers standing in front of their car.

In a world where reporters are dispatched to gather information and follow leads, maybe. In the actual world of "here's a live shot where we will repeat back what the anchor said to us but hey it looks like we're out there gathering information and following leads", you're about as likely to get new information from a Globe Direct as a live TV news van.
