State Police explain why Rte. 1 north was shut in Revere at the start of the evening rush yesterday:
A 17-year-old operator of a 2011 Mercedes-Benz caused a 6 car crash on route 1 northbound in Revere. The crash injured numerous people. The male driver had been issued a citation for speeding just an hour earlier by the Winthrop Police. He told troopers at the scene that he was 'late for work at the Market Basket' which was his reason for speeding in the breakdown when he caused the multi-vehicle crash.

"You're a bagger at Marketbasket and you're late? Please, go right ahead! Sorry for holding you up sir."

Your irony is well-targeted. Why let the Market Basket employee get away? In Boston, only sheiks' progeny is entitled to impunity and respect for honest work.
PS. My irony is probably more narrowly, but better targeted.

probably worse consequences for being late to work than those he'll face for causing a multiple car accident.

I read this story and thought two things: (1) something like what this person commented; and (2) Adam rocks, and I should thank him more. universalhub is my favorite news source in the Boston area.

A 2011 Mercedes runs around $15,000 to $20,000. Not cheap, and probably more than a high school kid can afford, but not inconceivable.

second entrance from Lynn Street and the top of the hill is actually a climbing lane for trucks, but is also used as an acceleration/merging lane for people entering from Lynn Street. It is not legal to use that lane to pass other traffic, especially when you're going in excess of the posted speed limit.

Not a good sign Just starting to drive: Speeding and making excuses for it. They should take his license away forever. Last time I checked you don't give excuses to police. Too many crazy drivers already. He needs to learn how to start taking the T.

Said no one who was pulled over for speeding, ever.
You might have a fair case about why it's stupid to try to make excuses to police; otoh they often ask why you were driving so fast, and you can call it an "excuse" if you want, but people generally answer something when a cop asks that question.

Responsible people wouldn't be pulled over for speeding in the first place.

I've known several responsible drivers with good records who have unwittingly fallen victim to such tactics (i.e., "clocked" at 48 in a 45 zone).
Exactly. Answering a direct question from a police officer

with a direct answer, which it sounds like happened with the original traffic stop in Winthrop, is not "making excuses." Making excuses is (for example) giving a police officer a "sob story" that sounds contrived in the hope they will not write you a ticket.
Believe it or not, many police officers are NOT looking to fill a quota, and will cut people a break for a number of civil MV violations if the license and registration query comes back clear (i.e., doesn't reveal outstanding warrants, suspended license or registration, thirty page violation history, etc). It's called exercising judgement and discretion.

I know it's standard behavior nowadays to immediately jump to the most extreme conclusion or solution to a problem, but try to at least think a little rationally. Yes, this kid screwed up big time. But let's dig into your closet and see what we can dig up from your past, and then take [insert privilege here] away from you forever.

So what if the kid drives a Mercedes? This looks like a kid that comes from a well to do family and is also learning that money does not just come from his parents.
People will complain about spoiled rich kids and then complain when one drives a nice car to his job at market basket.
It's just snobbery...

And in a city like Boston is expected behavior. People no longer see a kid that age working at a supermarket as a kid earning a paycheck and learning to manage money. They immediately see "deadbeat". It's sad.
This is more than just being reckless.

The kid was caught speeding an hour before he caused this accident which was due to him speeding, in god forbid, the frickin break down lane? Really? He is lucky he did not kill and/or injure more folks.
I think he needs to loose his license for a good long time as well as get some counseling.
Counseling?
By MatthewC

Why? I saw no indication that this kid has psychiatric issues. Or is "counseling" just the standard treatment for young people nowadays. Perhaps it should be called "reprogramming".
