![Deer and Massachusetts state trooper at Nantasket Beach, Hull](https://universalhub.com/files/styles/main_image_-_bigger/public/images/2016/deer1.jpg)
Neil the roving UHub photographer reports a deer emerged from the ocean at Nantasket Beach this afternoon - possibly after running into the water near the comfort station at the north end of the beach.
State Police kept a close watch - and prevented any selfie situation by keeping people away. At first, troopers were looking for somebody to come tranquilize the doe so they could bring her somewhere safer, but then:
Deer made it to secluded cove on south end of beach. With a police boat escort and fans following on the boardwalk.
Looked like MSP and rangers cleared that area and there's a lot of ground cover close by and plenty of deery terrain nearby so looks like Bambi of the Sea is OK.

So what are the chances that at least one of the people concerned about the deer on the beach hit and killed one with their within the last few days and the only concern they expressed was for possible damage to the car.

Probably much smaller than the number of concerned bystanders who ordered up a burger for dinner that night. (full disclosure: I too eat meat)
Police have very little training in animal control

The police academy offers very little (if any) training in animal control. For wild animals, the rule of thumb is always "leave them be" unless they are obviously trapped or injured. It seems to me that this case was handled well. The Department of State Police doesn't have animal control and I doubt the Town of Hull has anyone with deer training coming out on a holiday weekend. Even the Environmental Police, who have a boat station down the street in Hingham, attend the same police academy as the locals and Transit. They have specialists in the Large Animal Response Team (LART) but this wasn't a bear or moose nor would they be tranquilize a deer in the water. I remember a panicked 911 call for a "seal on the beach." A senior officer responded with me and radioed back, "Yes, there's a seal on the beach, where he should be. All units clear." A job well done by MSP.
