A sleepless citizen complains:
Lights in the Nashua Street Jail basketball courts stay on from dusk to dawn and interfere with my sleep. Please get the jail to turn off all the lights when the courts are vacant. Thanks.

It's probably lit all night for safety reasons.
And why doesn't the citizen invest in some curtains, not that I understand how that could affect sleep since when you are sleeping, or going there, your eyes are closed.

They can get light blocking blinds or curtains. This is part of living in the city, I should know, there's a bright street lamp outside my window. I got light blocking shades.

if they're lighting the sides of houses, they're not aimed properly. Cambridge did this for us when my roommate complained that even with light-blocking curtains, his room was brightly lit.
Took less than a week before they'd installed a snoot on the light and pretty much perfectly focused the light onto just the road and sidewalk.

so it's considerably later-built than the Charles River Park apartments or condos nearby, which date to the 1960s or 70s.
Turning off lights when a facility is not in use is good energy management, anyway.

Security experts have noted that always-on lights aren't good security as it makes people ignore these areas yet makes it easy for someone doing something bad to see.
For the same reason, motion sensing lights are good -- when they turn on unexpectedly people take notice and the light helps illuminate the possible threat.

that this citizen could easily buy curtains, I wonder why there is not more work to control light pollution. Hawaii is very strict about it, and it is amazing: everything that needs to be lit is lit, and everything that should not be lit is dark. It's fascinating to go past a lit-up car lot, and yet not be bathed in glare either. It's entirely possible to focus lights appropriately so they aren't blaring into people's windows unnecessarily.
