Area around downtown shelter for homeless veterans shut; bomb squad summoned

Police surrounded the New England Center and Home for Veterans on Court Street and shut down surrounding streets, the State Street T stop and part of City Hall Plaza as they investigated a possible threat made by one person around 9:45 p.m. The person was quickly taken into custody, but the bomb squad was requested to check out his back pack.

Steven McVerry reports:

Major cop/SWAT action downtown near gov. center. Guns out, yelling at pedestrians to turn around and go several blocks.

Given the events in Nice it's not surprising the police are on edge tonight.

However, it's unfortunate that the media and everyone else is calling it a terrorist attack. Apparently, the truck driver involved had recently been fired from his job. But I guess the French don't know how to translate the phrase "disgruntled former employee".

As for the "possible threat" in Downtown Boston, I suspect the BPD reaction would have been the same even if the Nice incident hadn't occurred.

Would the cops even charge him? After all, he was working ... or was it asserting his "constitutional right" to drive a truck on a road that was willfully blocked by people walking!
