Police: Chase of gun-toting Boston Common drug dealer ends in Winter Street struggle

Boston Police report arresting a Dorchester man after a struggle on a crowded downtown street that sent one officer to the hospital for observation.

Police say officers on the lookout for drug dealing on the Common yesterday morning spotted a deal going down around 10 a.m. at the Sailors and Soldiers Monument. As one officer approached the buyer, another officer moved in on the apparent seller, Rayshawn Mohameed, 18:

As that officer was speaking to the suspect, he suddenly jumped up and began running towards Downtown Crossing. The officer gave chase and was able to catch up to him on Winter Street where a violent struggle ensued. An officer from the Transit Police quickly arrived to assist the officer as he fought to gain control of the suspect who suddenly began yelling “I got a gun!” as they rolled around on the ground. The officers were eventually able to place the suspect in custody, at which time they recovered a loaded .22 caliber Ruger SR22 handgun from the front of the suspect’s pants. It was later revealed that the firearm had previously been reported stolen in Randolph. Officers also recovered 23 bags of marijuana packaged for sale as well as $209 in cash.

Mohameed was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, assault and battery on a police officer and receiving stolen property. The other guy had his marijuana seized and was issued a citation.

Innocent, etc.

i know this says 10 am yesterday so then what happened at around 5pm yesterday in that same area? I was trying to get onto the green line at the Park St stop across the way from Winter St and there were about 3-4 transit cop cars with lights flashing and a decent sized crowd staring and recording with their phones and cops I think had someone on the ground. Couldn't see because the crowd was too thick and needed to get on the train. Just very curious...

And then there was the incident (stabbing?) near Boylston/Chinatown the day before, at like 5-6pm. End of summer shenanigans I guess?

Hope he gets a long stretch - someone correct me if I'm wrong, but as this activity took place within sight of the Frog Pond and Playground - buzzing with children and tourists, would this not add time to any sentence?

Considering the seriousness of the other charges, they'll probably drop the weed charge for a plea. Selling a few bags of weed in the Common is really not that big a deal. Doing it with a loaded gun in your pants certainly is, though. And assaulting cops to get away is only adding to the jailtime.

2 year minimum on and after school or park on the drug deal, 18 mos minimum on the gun. He's looking at serious time, at least 3.5 years.

That's assuming the defendant doesn't plead out, takes the case to trial and is found guilty of all charges. Even then, most convictions are run concurrent.

This area, while nice, is frequented by a lot of low life's. Drug dealers are always out and about in the common. They mostly are found closer to the T, but still within a stones throw to the frog pond, and playground. Also, a lot of shit happens up at the sailors and soldiers monument too.

I'm glad police are out there looking for drugs. I wonder if anyone is out there looking for Heroin users in distress.

Last week I was strolling down Charles St and came upon this big guy in a heroin daze. He was repeatedly dropping his cell phone and a lit cigarette. Repeatedly stumbling off the curb and staggering into oncoming traffic. Repeatedly stopping in the middle of the sidewalk with his eyes closed.

Passersby asking "you OK buddy?" I went into one of the fancy cosmetic stores to tell the shopkeeper, not like I thought she could do anything, but I guess, just to get a witness.

Dude is drawing tons of attention, but no one really knows what to do. At the very least, dude needs a nap.

I think DTX needs a heroin daycare, like the Methadone Mile has. It's completely out of control.

Seriously - when you see this, call 911.

Unless the ambulance that roams DTX is right there, then all you have to do is point out the situation and a paramedic will hop out with a detox kit and check it out.

There are also actual pay phones in DTX if you don't have a cel phone.

The ones I have reported were pretty much passed out already anyway, but the earlier they get help, the greater the chance of survival.

Great jobs law enforcement, once again an awesome job by collectively different law enforcement agencies. I'm so glad jurisdictional barriers are been broken every day and dissolved. this new way of policing without jurisdictional barriers makes us all safer thank you law enforcement.

Friendly reminder to all bostonians. Every time a law enforcement officer comes in contact with a gun a knife or any other deadly weapon they could have been killed. so when you hear or read about a law enforcement officer disarming a criminal he or she could have died at that moment.
Lets forever keep our first responders in our prayers and on our churche's prayer list.
