Not bad for the old city landfill

Slowly is the best way to to walk the path along the Charles River and Saw Mill Brook at Millennium Park - more of a chance to see things you'd miss otherwise, such as the small fish swimming along the river bank, the turtles sunning themselves and the small flowers on some stalks. And if you get lucky and you look across the brook, you'll realize what you thought was the top of a 15-foot tree stump is actually a great blue heron.
And the best time to do this is on a weekday - fewer dogs and the ones you do encounter seem to be calmer.

That's purple loosestrife, an invasive species.
Damn you, horrid weed for looking so nice!
Ugh, thanks. This one was standing all by itself, maybe a sentinel for the invading hordes? It wasn't all that far from what looked like a grove of bamboo.
More likely last holdout than new invader
Biological control against Purple Loosestrife (releasing bugs that eat it from Eurasia where it's native) has been very effective. I've seen the leaf-chewing beetles in action at Millennium. Many places where it used to be the dominant plant now have only a few stragglers. It will never go away but the hope is that enough of the bugs will hang around to keep it from running rampant the way it did 20 or so years ago.

Don't go on Saturdays between 9am-1pm
There are no parking spots.
It would actually be kind of cool to have shuttle buses from a few spots in WR and Rosi to Millennium to offset the need for everyone to drive up there but I guess the money wouldn't work. Stops at Roslindale MBTA station, Holy Name, YMCA or something like that.
I'd happily pay like $2/person to not have to drive up there.

That would not be too tough to implement.
(note, I was hoping to say that there is a shuttle already. I'm surprised the T hasn't noticed this potential market.

...from the WUNR/WRCA/WXKS radio transmitter site on Saw Mill Brook Parkway in Newton; there is a path that starts near the end of the Parkway and goes into the woods.

If you're feeling ambitious, you can make a loop out of it. Start at Millennium, follow the trail past Saw Mill Brook Parkway to Wells Ave, cross the river on Nahanton Street, take the path around Kendrick Pond, continue along the river into Cutler Park, then take the path that parallels Needham Street until it loops around to Vine Rock Street, through Riverdale Park to cross the river again at Rt 109, then up the VFW, and back to Millennium. It's about 8 or so miles total, maybe a little over.
