Northeastern takes a bite of the Christian Science Center

Beth Treffeisen reports that Northeastern is looking to lease roughly 80,000 square feet of space in the Christian Science publishing complex off Mass. Ave. for office and storage space.

If not them, some other local university? I remember seeing signs to that effect when passing by a few months ago.

The report details which space NU now occupies and which space they will occupy. Currently they are in the long building behind the Mother Church that runs alongside the reflecting pool. Incidentally, the pool as well as the benches\gardens that line the Huntington Ave side are comp!etely fenced off for renovation work.

Northeastern (the College of Professional Studies specifically does indeed occupy 4 floors of the building that runs parallel to the reflecting pool. The university also rents additional space in the tower on the corner of Huntington Ave and Belvidere (?) for other non-student service offices.

Is this the plan to make the pool shallower and build a walkway across the middle of it? I remember that got a less than warm reception a few years ago.

The pool is going to be shallower, with a black granite base, to save water. But no walkway across. This summer, there were some samples of the granite design at the edge of the pool, and staff explained it to anyone who asked. “They did have a plan for a walkway across the pool, but that’s out because they’ve said they can’t do it and there is a problem with the engineering of it,” he said. “They do plan to cut the pool down and shorten it by 16 feet on the Mass Ave side. Also, right now it is about two to four feet deep and that’s a lot of water. They going to make it eight inches deep all the way across. It’s a lot to maintain a deeper pool and they want to be more environmentally sound by using less water. They will keep the infinity edge where the water pours over. Now, the water will be so shallow that you will be able to see the bottom and they have an interesting design element under the pool that will add a very different visual element there.”

That visual element involves installing black granite stone all the way across the pool that will create an entirely new viewing experience of the signature neighborhood landmark.
