Many of us have volunteered for years because it's something we make part of our lives. Not just a knee jerk response to something distasteful and many just to humblebrag.
Welcome to the club though, new members are always welcome!
A pity you've never had an "aha!" moment that made you want to do something. And you ignore people who were, like you, already doing something, but decided to do more.

Sorry, having worked in volunteer situations when you have the type that come due to some recent event it can overwhelm established centers. Too many people not knowing what to do and needing direction when that isn't possible can overwhelm the "regulars".
Unlike after an earthquake and you see people lined up to give blood, you can have "too many" volunteers in one place.
I signed up for a monthly donation to Planned Parenthood just yesterday. So did two of my friends.
I also made it in honor of Mike Pence, and sent the honoree letter to the white house :)
In fact, I might make a second donation every month and send each letter to him. One for every month he is in office. So there will be lots of continuous love!
It's also the holiday season, Christmas in some stores.
This is a typical time for a bump in volunteering and monies. Probably little to do with the election, but if it caused a few to start early, two good things came out of it.

idea:
Buy the Salvation Army person a cup of coffee. Little things like that mean so much. Ask if they'd like a sandwich while they stand outside. I've found many stand for hours without a break and would love a snack.
I've actually gone back into Macy's to purchase the person hat and gloves. You find some of the people standing there are actually not dressed appropriately. It's a good place to start.

I'd say give blood, there's never enough.
the next 4 years
will surely bring us many many different, terrifying reasons to renew our urgent support of community social justice organizations. dont you worry.
Actually, it will

Finally, some constructive reactions instead of the giant collective wussy whining session.
This is the way to make a difference folks. Good job.

Or not
Salvation Army is infamous for their homophobia.
The beauty of Patricia's suggestion
You can support the individual volunteering (they're often poor, sometimes homeless), without supporting the Salvation Army.
