Well he is known as Mayor Trashbag. It seems to fit now
And unknowns to him.. The part in Hamilton where they do that.. IS APART OF THE SHOW. Typically if a politician is the audience they will say *nice* things about them (especially if they like them) at the end. Hamilton is a political musical so it makes sense. However, they saw an opportunity when Pence was in the audience and took it. So they let him have it (in a very nice way)
Of course, Pence and Trump knew this which is probably why he went, knowing it would cause a shitstorm on twitter the next day. To conveniently hide the TrumpU settlement. And the kicker, Pence said he was not bothered by it and thought it was free speech in action. Probably because he knew it was going to happen and it would not upset him since he was aware.
Nope, i prefer BSO, where I can enjoy beautiful music in peace without a bunch of special snowflakes trying to cram their beliefs down my throat. And without clowns like you who would give me stink eye if I don't stand up and boo/clap on demand along with the rest of the lemmings.
Are precisely that, someone else's pesky ideas and stuff. You know exactly what you're spending your money on. As for theater, you're paying to see the play, not hear some butthurt special snowflake whine about something completely unrelated to the play. He should write a book if he wants to get paid for whining. Or start a blog, for that matter - seems to be working quite well for you now that you have eight years worth of whiny clickbait.
It was the perfect time and in the perfect place. Actually, there would be no better time and/or place for it. Seriously, this criticism would be used no matter when or where it happened and is the dumbest thing I've been hearing about the entire thing.
I'm of the impression that there wouldn't be a perfect time or place for this to occur, in your book, so I firmly disagree. Let's also be honest: it's unlikely the cast would ever get another chance to speak to him on this sort of level ever again. So, in essence, perfect time, perfect place. All counter-arguments: wahhhhh.
So basically you want a safe space where you cannot be hurt by any ideas that challenge your world view. You want your feelings protected from the mean, mean strangers with different perspectives.
You sound more fragile than the "snowflakes" you're raging against.
If I'm paying to see a play I expect a play, not a white privilege lecture. Would you be happy if you pay for a book that says Thomas Sowell on the cover but it turns out to be a box of Coates-brand toilet paper? Or, in your case, vice versa?
But you don't seem to go to plays very much. And you must be like us hoi polloi who can't afford a ticket to Hamilton, so I can understand why you might unfamiliar with its plot. I haven't seen it either, but I still read newspapers and Web sites and such, plus, as a youth, I took American history classes, so I know it's a play about politics (spoiler alert: A vice president murders the title character!).
Perhaps it's just as well you don't go to the theater: Some plays have plots that try to make the audience think. That seems to be an issue for you. Don't worry, though: Here's a show I think you'll like.
Something tells me you'd find a way to make your beliefs known if someone didn't stand for the national anthem, you know, like the rest of the lemmings.
Don't get too comfortable at the BSO. Watch Mozart's Marriage of Figaro and read the libretto. Study composers like Beethoven and Shostakovitch, and their relationship to politics. I also dare you to listen very carefully to this entire, and very timely, masterpiece: https://youtu.be/rsSMCq7pl_k?list=PL84345308459DF21B
We, maybe they're not all from Macedonia, but I've noticed a surge in anti-American (anti-free speech, anti-civi rights, etc.) posts on other comment boards. Their posts try to suggest incidents of hate are all false claims, or that people speaking out against hate are haters themselves, etc., etc., — I'm sure you know what I mean.
The overwhelming noise from these paid trolls tends to drown out, dismiss, and denigrate legitimate views from real people who wish to express their concern for what's happening right now. ( "snowflake" — that's a word they use a lot )
Worst of all, their ugly remarks go unchallenged in other comment boards. Good people give up and don't even try anymore because they get hammered back by the negative trolling — there's never any engaged dialog.
Here at Universal Hub, views are expressed on all sides of an issue and reasoned discussions ensue. There are many times when people who disagree on some topics, will be in total agreement on others. It's harder for the paid trolls to hit and run here, because people aren't afraid to challenge them and refute their false arguments with actual facts.
Did ya miss the point about it BEING PART OF THE SHOW??!? They were doing their job, but instead of being all nicey to the politician who was in the audience, they gave him a piece of their mind. And eloquently done too.
If two things are "apart" they are separated and not together. Thus "apart of the show" implies it was not together as part of the show. "A part of the show..." is a whole different ball of wax.
Seriously, Adam, can you create a special tag or a red flag or something every time some anon posts? On one hand, we've got four years of this malarkey headed our way, so if they're too scared or whatever to put their name with their opinion, can we start calling them out for their BS? And on the other hand, it would be a hoot to get a count at the end of each day/week/month based on the number of "Anon" tags. We could have an over/under bet every week, winner gets a French Toast Alert t-shirt!
But there are still anonymous commenters with something worthwhile to say. Maybe not in all threads, but ...
Counting anon comments? Ugh. I'd have to include all the ones you guys never see, because I'm busy getting my index-finger exercises by clicking the Delete box next to them in the Darwin's waiting room that is my anon-comment queue these days (oh, dear, did I say something nasty again? Sorry, they all seem really nice, I just have to be careful how many pixels I use - wouldn't want to go over my daily pixel quota).
I live in Boston and I have never heard or read of anyone calling him that. An internet search returns only your post from last night, and Spanish references to " mayor trashbag" which means "bigger trashbag"
my question is:
if Kushner ran in 2024, could Richard Spencer bring himself to lead a room full of people to say "Hail Kushner, Hail our people, Hail victory!" Similarly, would the crowd give a Nazi salute in response?
Because, if you haven't heard, that just happened (with Trump substituted for Kushner) in Washington D.C. and in a building owned by the federal government.
I don't know what your question is asking due to the multiple variables. I suppose Richard Spencer could bring himself to lead a room full of people to say anything, provided he was in a room full of people predisposed to what you fantasize him leading a room full of people to say.
If Richard Spencer's ability to elicit a response you desire to see is based on whether or not Jared Kushner runs for president or not in 2024 (see your first sentence), then you and this Richard Spencer apparently have something deep and special in common, or rather you secretly wish you had something deep in common. He does not show up on Wikipedia so I am keeping this topical and avoiding pointed speculation.
Edit: Richard Spencer DOES show up on Wikipedia. He is a British politician and has been dead for 600 years. Haha I get it - the dead rise and will walk the Earth and vote Nazi Socialist if Kushner runs after Trumps two terms. Does this mean you wish to be Richard Spencer to be a zombie or to be British
Edit Edit: there are FOUR British Richard Spencers who are dead politicians. There is one dead American Richard Spencer politician.
Is this just a UHub thing? Did I miss some story where Mayor Walsh is taking to doing what Gov. Dukakis does and is walking around picking up trash? Why are you (and another on this thread) calling him that?
I think it started here on Uhub during the Olympics debacle. No idea the origins of the name but I'm sure a few uhubbers who called him that can explain better.
But I like it. It's fitting. Trash belongs in a trashbag. Walsh is a trashy mayor. He belongs in a trashbag with the rest of the trash.
Walsh might have faults. They may be plentiful. They have a 5% chance of costing him reelection, but referring to him as "trash" is a bit crass. But whatever. Is Chelsea out of receivership yet?
By the way, criticism of Walsh's criticism is warranted. If the person to whom the monologue is not offended, why would anyone else be?
Considering Boston is the economic hub of our region, and anything the city does effects us as a region. And since he's the head of that city, I have every right to criticize him. Maybe if I lived in California you might have a leg to stand on, but I don't so, you don't either. So I will be as critical as I see fit.
As far as Chelsea .. We've been out of receivership for over 20 years now (since 1995) and running at a cash flow positive since 1998. We don't even have the same city structure anymore as the new charter dictated so. But nice jab tho!
I don't know where this comes from either. There are lots of nasty nicknames one could make for Mayuh Mahty, but "trashbag" seems pretty unimaginative and unrelated to any specific criticism. You might as well call him stupid-head. I'm just hoping that with any dreams of a DC gig with a Clinton-administration being down the pooper he turns his attention to connecting some of his window-dressing initiatives to some substantive structural changes in City govt. (changing the BRA's name doesn't count as substantive).
Adam, is there an up-tick of trolly types on here recently (last 8 months or so) with either named accounts or unverified/anon's (beyond the usual frothy anons)?
The cast was very respectful. They didn't stop the show. They waited until curtain call when most shows make pleas for a worthy cause.
This was bad, but the vitriol against the President and his family was fine?
I thought we progressives were special little snowflakes. Your guy is haranguing the cast on Twitter and bitching about unflattering pictures to the press.
Didn't vote for him. Embarrassed he's my prez. But He's the prez.
Pence was a guest of the cast at their play. You don't insult your guests on their way out the door. Neither the time nor place. Much as I disagree with his politics, Pence was the gentleman he always is.
Embarrassed he's my prez. hut He's the prez.
He was a guest of the cast at their play.
No, your prez was not a "guest of the cast at their play". He wasn't even present. He's just the fragile hothouse flower who boo-hooed all over twitter about it. I guess Pence went blubbering to his big brother about those mean ol' actors.
Do you ignore the possibility that this Hamilton story was deliberately escalated by Trump to bump down the headlines about last week's lawsuit settlement? Hell I wouldn't be surprised if he knew something like this would happen, getting Pence tickets to a Broadway play.
In 2000 Pence's platform included: "Resources should be directed toward those institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behavior."
The institutions he referred to included those that advocate different types of conversion therapy -- which reputable psychological professionals consider total crap. So there hasn't been any statement that he wants to take govt money and use it to fund conversion therapy (on people seeking to change their orientation or against people's wills).
And the dog staring at your plate has never stated that his intention was to snag that steak as soon as your fool-ass head is looking the other way.
Read what the poster wrote and what I wrote. there's a huge difference between people seeking treatment and forcing people to undergo medical therapy.
Talking dogs???
I don't disagree with you on conversion therapy - and I don't agree with a lot of Pence's politics. I also don't agree with a lot of Obama's. But both are good men with sincere - if misguided - beliefs.
(I wouldn't describe the president-elect with the same words)
When he declared that the city wasn't going to help the feds enforce immigration reform, I actually said out to my wife "that's the first thing he's gotten right since he was elected. I guess even a broken clock is right twice a day; I wonder what he'll publicly screw up now?"
Gilbert and Sullivan wrote The Mikado (1885) and used it to satirize British politics and institutions. Productions in other locations did the same. I saw a production here in Boston in the early 1990s. They took a few shots at then-Mayor Flynn and other local politicians and issues. No one complained - because that is what the show is.
Hamilton is a political based show that calls out politicians in the audience. If you don't like politics in your entertainment, then don't attend politics based entertainment.
You know, we have a guest in the audience this evening. Vice President Elect Pence, I see you walking out but I hope you hear just a few more moments. There's nothing to boo, ladies and gentlemen. There's nothing to boo. We're all here sharing a story of love. We have a message for you, sir, we hope that you will hear us out.
And I encourage everybody to pull out your phones and tweet and post because this message needs to be spread far and wide.
Vice President-Elect Pence, we welcome you and we truly thank you for joining us here at Hamilton: An American Musical. We really do.
We, sir, are the diverse America who are alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us: our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights, sir. But we truly hope this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us. All of us.
Thank you for seeing this show, this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men, women of different colors, creeds, and orientations.
Gosh, can't you just see how terrible that is? He said... "anxious." How dare he!
An admittedly anti-gay vice president elect who thinks children who are gay should be zapped attends a political musical performed by a cast with many gay actors and Walsh believes it's inappropriate for a representative of the cast to respectfully address the vice president elect?? Wow. Sad.
The fact that Mayor Walsh thought this (instead of Trump/Pence's positions on a boatload of important issues) was even worthy of comment speaks volumes about him. Hope a true progressive challenges his re-election.
So you're saying Walsh is pro-Trump now? Walsh is as pro-Democrat and pro-Clinton as you can get. Maybe he just likes the freedom of being able to go to a baseball game without getting lectured at by someone on the Jumbrotron who disagrees with him.
There's an old joke about Chicago politics: "What do you call 99% loyalty?" Disloyalty!
That seems to fit here, in this liberal post-election bubble. If you're not wearing 37 pieces of anti-Trump flair, you're not expressing yourself enough and something must be wrong with you.
Pence said he didn't mind the cast speaking to him at the end, so why should anyone else? He also said "This is what freedom sounds like".
Theater has never been meant to be a "safe space". Back to the ancient Greeks, theater has been used to address the powerful, tweak the status quo, and try to get people to think.
Of course, quietly following through on your convictions in the privacy of a voting booth doesn't get you anywhere near the 'pub as bullyragging someone publicly.
I give credit to Mayor Walsh for taking a stance on this. If I was one of the other patrons in the theater, i'd be upset, you pay all that money to see a play, not a political speech.
He was at a building opening in Roxbury in a room filled with white adults and gave a speech about how the new business was going to lift the neighborhood kids up out of poverty - there was maybe one person from the neighborhood at the speech out of about a hundred. Seemed like he had no understanding of the demographics at the event and whoever wrote the speech didn't either!
The mayor is a powerful voice for special interests that pay him to advance their agendas. Absent a scripted or pre-prepared stance about something, his remarks often seem to be not well thought through.
Seems like two things are conflated here, if the media reports are right (I wasn't there.) Cast reading respectful message, OK. Audience member being booed as he walks in (doubtful that's part of the show), not really OK. Not classy, rather, rude or impolite at best.
As for whatever our mayor is trying to say, I'be given up. Excuse me, my pearls need clutching.
The booing of Pence came from the audience, not the stage.
We're not to that point of dictatorship yet where the boss's right-hand man gets to silence every room he walks into.
Considering what a pain the ass Trump is being with his malingering on Fifth Avenue, there's enough motive to boo the presence of his entourage on traffic grounds alone.
What I find alarming is the statement from Pence that others find reassuring: "This is what freedom sounds like". Yes it is, and you don't like it, do you? So...

It's Troubling To Hear The Mayor Of Boston Denounce Free Speech
yup
Well he is known as Mayor Trashbag. It seems to fit now

Media manipulation at its best.
No
They were WORKING, and when you're at WORK you leave politics at home, STFU and do your job.
Not a theater goer, I take it
You seem nice.
Theater?
Nope, i prefer BSO, where I can enjoy beautiful music in peace without a bunch of special snowflakes trying to cram their beliefs down my throat. And without clowns like you who would give me stink eye if I don't stand up and boo/clap on demand along with the rest of the lemmings.

If you go to see a political play
you should expect some politics.
In the play
Not in the audience
Again, on Planet Stevil
Here on earth this was PART of the performance.
Dope.
Parts of the performance
Are repeated each night.
so when I go to see Hamilton I'll get to see this commentary? Which part should I expect it?
Again - not any fan of Pence's politics - but it wasn't an appropriate time or place
"It wasn't an appropriate time or place."
It was the perfect time and in the perfect place. Actually, there would be no better time and/or place for it. Seriously, this criticism would be used no matter when or where it happened and is the dumbest thing I've been hearing about the entire thing.
Because you were raised as a wild child by a den of wolves?
This was a political play = entertainment
This was not a political forum.
Nobody, not even politicians, go out for an evening of entertainment to be publicly politically ambushed.
That's part of the job.
If you can't hack it, maybe you shouldn't be in politics. Did you even read what was said to him?
And, pack of wolves, christ you're hyperbolic.
I have zero problem with what they said
I even agree 100% with the sentiment.
But A man out for an evening of entertainment with his family is not ripe pickings for an ambush no matter what he (or she) does for a living.
Again
I'm of the impression that there wouldn't be a perfect time or place for this to occur, in your book, so I firmly disagree. Let's also be honest: it's unlikely the cast would ever get another chance to speak to him on this sort of level ever again. So, in essence, perfect time, perfect place. All counter-arguments: wahhhhh.
Just because you can
Doesn't mean you should.
Well they did
And even pence said they were "quite polite". You can stop white-knighting for him, now.
I think you misspelled "BS"

And the dog staring at your plate has never stated that his intention was to snag that steak as soon as your fool-ass head is looking the other way.
English
Read what the poster wrote and what I wrote. there's a huge difference between people seeking treatment and forcing people to undergo medical therapy.
Talking dogs???
I don't disagree with you on conversion therapy - and I don't agree with a lot of Pence's politics. I also don't agree with a lot of Obama's. But both are good men with sincere - if misguided - beliefs.
(I wouldn't describe the president-elect with the same words)
Swahili
Pence is a putz.
Even a broken clock
When he declared that the city wasn't going to help the feds enforce immigration reform, I actually said out to my wife "that's the first thing he's gotten right since he was elected. I guess even a broken clock is right twice a day; I wonder what he'll publicly screw up now?"
Politics in the theatre goes way back...
I'd like to hear from Joyce Linehan and Julie Burros on this
I suspect neither one would agree with what the Mayor said.
Just awful. How could they say something like this?
Gosh, can't you just see how terrible that is? He said... "anxious." How dare he!
Thanks for this
I appreciate seeing what really happened. No one should have posted an opinion unless they read/heard this first.
An admittedly anti-gay vice
An admittedly anti-gay vice president elect who thinks children who are gay should be zapped attends a political musical performed by a cast with many gay actors and Walsh believes it's inappropriate for a representative of the cast to respectfully address the vice president elect?? Wow. Sad.
The fact that Mayor Walsh
The fact that Mayor Walsh thought this (instead of Trump/Pence's positions on a boatload of important issues) was even worthy of comment speaks volumes about him. Hope a true progressive challenges his re-election.
So you're saying Walsh is pro
So you're saying Walsh is pro-Trump now? Walsh is as pro-Democrat and pro-Clinton as you can get. Maybe he just likes the freedom of being able to go to a baseball game without getting lectured at by someone on the Jumbrotron who disagrees with him.
There's an old joke about Chicago politics: "What do you call 99% loyalty?" Disloyalty!
That seems to fit here, in this liberal post-election bubble. If you're not wearing 37 pieces of anti-Trump flair, you're not expressing yourself enough and something must be wrong with you.
I don't consider it rude
to express concerns about bigotry.
Spoken like a privileged white man.
Sorry to hear Mayor Trashbag has slipped back into his coma.
PENCE SAID HE DIDN'T MIND
Pence said he didn't mind the cast speaking to him at the end, so why should anyone else? He also said "This is what freedom sounds like".
Theater has never been meant to be a "safe space". Back to the ancient Greeks, theater has been used to address the powerful, tweak the status quo, and try to get people to think.
Indeed!
What's more, Colleges and Universities once upon a time were a similar venue. Anybody remember those days?
Quite frankly I'm not worried
Quite frankly I'm not worried about whether or not Mike Pence minds if people speak out against bigotry. I will speak out regardless!
Turns out Hamilton cast talks the talk
But when it comes to voting, doesn't really walk the walk:
http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3959536/Some-stars-Hamilton-have...
Of course, quietly following through on your convictions in the privacy of a voting booth doesn't get you anywhere near the 'pub as bullyragging someone publicly.
So what?
One need not stand up for justice everywhere to be permitted to stand up for justice anywhere.
(and this is from someone who hasn't missed a general, primary, presidential primary, special, or local (in springtime!) election in over a decade)
Don't vote?
Don't complain!
Mayor
I give credit to Mayor Walsh for taking a stance on this. If I was one of the other patrons in the theater, i'd be upset, you pay all that money to see a play, not a political speech.
The Play Was Performed In Its Entirety
( You got everything you paid for, and even more! )
Marty gave a bad speach last week
He was at a building opening in Roxbury in a room filled with white adults and gave a speech about how the new business was going to lift the neighborhood kids up out of poverty - there was maybe one person from the neighborhood at the speech out of about a hundred. Seemed like he had no understanding of the demographics at the event and whoever wrote the speech didn't either!
He Doesn't Seem To Typically Think For Himself
The mayor is a powerful voice for special interests that pay him to advance their agendas. Absent a scripted or pre-prepared stance about something, his remarks often seem to be not well thought through.
Seems like two things are
Seems like two things are conflated here, if the media reports are right (I wasn't there.) Cast reading respectful message, OK. Audience member being booed as he walks in (doubtful that's part of the show), not really OK. Not classy, rather, rude or impolite at best.
As for whatever our mayor is trying to say, I'be given up. Excuse me, my pearls need clutching.
Germane to note
The booing of Pence came from the audience, not the stage.
We're not to that point of dictatorship yet where the boss's right-hand man gets to silence every room he walks into.
Considering what a pain the ass Trump is being with his malingering on Fifth Avenue, there's enough motive to boo the presence of his entourage on traffic grounds alone.
Mayor Walsh's comment on Hamilton
You know what's a slippery slope Mayor Walsh? The slide into Fascism that America is going down right now.
Would Mayor Walsh prefer this musical?
I bet Mike Pence and Donald Trump would!
What I find alarming
What I find alarming is the statement from Pence that others find reassuring: "This is what freedom sounds like". Yes it is, and you don't like it, do you? So...
