Too often bigots aren't willing to show any real effort beyond a few FB rants and maybe a re-tweet with a racist meme. So it's heartwarming to see someone take the time to spew their hatespeech short hand and spend the money to mail it across the pond.

So far...it's from England. So, how many electoral votes do they have? Just how far has Trump reached?

He's Trump, he's Trump, he's Trump, he's in your head.

Get a friggin grip. I'm not sure you can pin this one on our next President.

You're the one who's obsessively stalking these threads and braying "HE'S IN YOUR HEAD! HE'S IN YOUR HEAD!" every time another hate incident is reported. Wouldn't you just love it if people said, "Oh gosh, I guess we'd better stop talking about bias incidents because some semiliterate random told us to 'Get a friggin[sic] grip' and said that Trump is in our heads"? Please, go elsewhere and try your sandbox manipulations on some small gullible children -- grownups are talking here.

While I could do "all racism all the time," there's certainly more than enough going on these days, I doubt you really read the site much, because if you did, you'd notice the other stuff I write about.

Still, on the off chance you are a regular, you know how much it pains me, as a liberal, to hear criticism like yours. A complete stab in the heart it is. So for folks like you, I've created A very special Universal Hub - No election news, ever. I'm sure you'll be happier there, if, in fact, you actually are a regular visitor to the site.

Trump-inspired racist incidents are happening across the US by the hundreds, soon to be thousands, even in true-blue MA.

You don't think that's worth reporting in a blog focused on local news? Or are you just uncomfortable with the notion that Trump owns a lot of responsibility for enabling and encouraging these hateful assholes?

up
Voting closed 0

I think each and every one of those asshats is responsible for their own behavior and should be strung up by their toes if proven guilty. I don't subscribe to "the devil made him do it" as a valid theory of mind.

Incidentally, wasn't Obama supposed to be putting down the revolt by the Georgia Militia at this stage of the game?

up

if there weren't hundreds of these incidents being reported nationwide, which suggests that there are actually thousands more happening but going unreported.

This, after a national campaign of 18 months by a candidate who got his start with birtherism, launched his candidacy by slurring Latinos, advocated wholesale prejudice against an entire religion, routinely re-broadcast anti-Semitic white-nationalist memes, picked a nasty homophobe as his veep, got caught out bragging about disgusting date-rapey behavior when he thought no one was watching, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.

Bannon is in the White House. Trump pretended that he had no idea who David Duke was, and just now came out with the lamest, most mealy-mouthed renunciation of his most ardent neo-Nazi Sieg-heiling supporters.

White boy, please. Who exactly do you think you're fooling?

up

I've been told about how racist we white boys are for the past twenty+ years. And that's only because that's when I was old enough to understand I was being accused of something. Only difference is, the R lamp is on in the white house so all those same asshats can now be blamed on one man instead of on vague "institutional racism."

Or do you mean to tell me it was all hunky dory before June 2015?

Also, are you asking us to believe that this is the very first time you've ever mentioned Rev. Wright? Because I'd bet the mortgage that you're being more than a bit hypocritical here, and have been quite happy to imply or outright claim that Wright's intemperate speech reflected a parallel fault in the character of the current President.

(Also, I am a 'white boy' half a century old, and have had no problem making the distinction between those accused of racism and myself. But you seem to take it personally. Or maybe you just find people pointing it out in your presence more often. Hmmm...)

No, it ain't my politics (or yours) that protects you from the nuts.

It's the rule of law.

And if that fails (God forbid), then it's the guns me and everyone else is allowed to own.

See, back in the old country (many of them actually), the pogroms happened because the rabble needed to be roused to distract them from opposing the government's klepto tendencies AND the Jews or the Gypsies or the $SCAPEGOAT_MINORITY were unarmed.

Or more to the point...why do you think the klan doesn't hold their rallies in "inner cities?" Probably the same reason the neo nazis were "persuaded" to not march down main st in Skokie, Ill.

Okay.

We now have a president who has made it clear what he thinks of the rule of law, both in word and now his deeds.

Anyone can be a supporter, but that doesn't mean the person they're supporting shares any of their views on anything. Acquaintances or even friends are not the same as associates.

By comparison, an associate is someone a person chooses to interact and/or work with to achieve common goals. Such a choice is made because of shared views and ideas about the things the associates will be working to advance.

The Reverend Wright was an acquaintance or perhaps even a friend of President Obama, but that doesn't mean the two men had any shared opinions about running the nation.

You and I disagree on many topics, but I'm still willing to be friends. If you came to my house for dinner, it wouldn't automatically mean that we agreed on anything (except perhaps, the pleasure of sharing a meal). Such a friendship wouldn't mean that you were associating yourself with any of my beliefs, nor I of yours.

The president-elect is actively choosing the people he wants to associate himself with because he does share their beliefs, and wants them to help influence the direction his administration will go. Supporters may become associates, but only if they're actively chosen.

up

Throughout our lives, we all have a chance to gain wisdom through experience. People with who we may share some interests, can turn out to be quite different than they appeared at first, once you get to know them a little better.

Mr. Obama may have remained friends with the reverend, but he clearly dis-associated himself from any of his extreme views. He most certainly was not one of his top advisors! The president-elect is doing exactly the opposite.

up
Voting closed 0

Obama said the right words when tape of the good reverend made it on CNN. I didn't really believe that in his heart he didn't remain unhealthily skeptical of what some would derisively call the institutions of white America, but that's my own opinion.

Trump said the same kinds of words. You don't have to believe him either. But Bannon's not an white supremacist just because the internet says he is. So either a pic of him in a white hood or a debate on actual policy, please.

Here you are, spending seconds and sucking down oxygen complaining about the words that he used, and the rest of the message and your (I assume) reasoned counter argument is completely ignored.

You and I can't have a civilized conversation about whether or not the man had a point about the left having a grudge against conservative women because you're hung up on the word 'dyke.'

If you haven't figured it out yet...he's playing you. You don't get a word in edgewise because you're off chasing the shiny red herring.

mere words?

Except that words matter, especially when they're used casually, the way Bannon does in this example, to demean a person based on their sexual preference, or to impugn them by associating them with that sexual preference (or as Bannon often does, for their religion, or skin color, or ethnicity.)

Political correctness admittedly can be ridiculous in certain academic settings, but reflexive antipathy to it has become the right's lazy, despicable excuse to use bigoted language in everyday life outside of fringe-left college settings.

Using the word "dyke" the way Bannon does isn't a brave stand against the excesses of a tiny minority of misguided college professors and sophomoric students to limit free speech. It's a mean-spirited, hateful insult meant to degrade a human being based on some inherent quality of their person.

Protected free speech? Certainly. Revealing of loathsome bigotry? Yeah, you just showed us the kind of small, narrow-minded person that you are.

Humans with a shred of empathy recognize the derisive use of "PC" for the ridiculous fig leaf that it is. If you think that "dyke" the way Bannon uses it is just a harmless word, you're not a bold defender the First Amendment: you're just a backward, ignorant asshole.

up

wherein I will tell you that more people than you may like to admit grew up at a time and place where 'gay' was a schoolyard insult that had next to nothing to do with sexual preference or normative statements about sexual preference and all to do with being a word that you threw around without a hint of political context.

I had maybe one high school friend with whom I've since lost tough who came out as gay in college. Guess what: he still used that kind of language when he was a kid. I don't think he gave it as much thought as you're giving it.
Some people just talk that way. And will continue to. Doesn't make them nazis.

I repeat. You being offended is your internal state of mind. Does not imply anything about the internal state of mind of the speaker, especially one not holding a conversation with you.

Anyway, since we're still wasting breath on words and not on the meaning conveyed with them and the others we're not discussing, shall I simplify matters and get myself a 'Deplorable' bumper sticker to plaster over my Johnson/Weld sticker?

There's no such thing as civilized societal norms that socially proscribe the use of words that historically have been used to degrade, bully and belittle oppressed minorities based on their race, religion, ethnicity, sexual preference, etc.

Those are the words that Bannon said, and the words written in articles of the publication he edited.

I'm not asking anyone to read some liberal-media interpretation or analysis of those words. They speak very clearly for themselves.

If you've got some spin on a headline that includes "Renegade Jew" in a way that softens its blatant anti-Semitism, or any of the other patent bigotry in Bannon's own words or Breitbart articles -- like giving a forum to heinous shit-stains like Milo Yiannopoulos, who incited racist and sexist attacks on Leslie Jones -- I'm open to hearing it.

on that Renegade Jew thing was a guy named David Horowitz. Do with that what you will.

And he closes with

I am a Jew who has never been to Israel and has never been a Zionist in the sense of believing that Jews can rid themselves of Jew hatred by having their own nation state. But half of world Jewry now lives in Israel, and the enemies whom Obama and Hillary have empowered — Iran, the Muslim Brotherhood, Hezbollah, ISIS, and Hamas — have openly sworn to exterminate the Jews. I am also an American (and an American first), whose country is threatened with destruction by the same enemies. To weaken the only party that stands between the Jews and their annihilation, and between America and the forces intent on destroying her, is a political miscalculation so great and a betrayal so profound as to not be easily forgiven.

Which kinda puts it into more context, doesn't it?

I thought of the word in response to Jack's post, asking Adam for a way for readers to flag anonymous trolls, as an alternative to banning anonymous posts entirely.

Macedorable is essentially a sarcastic application of adorable, but applied specifically towards malevolent, anonymous (non-verified) trolls. Trolls aren't individuals who'll engage in discussing issues with you; they like to hit and run. They're hoping for people to get angry, but responding to them is always futile. The best response is to not feed the troll.

Indeed, I've used my "Adorable!" to end subthreads that were going nowhere — either at a point where nothing else can be said, or in response to something so outrageous that no words could sufficiently address it. In all instances, the person I was responding to never replied.

By flagging a post "Macedorable!" it alerts other readers that you suspect it's probably an anonymous troll, so they may choose not to feed it. If the poster is actually a real person expressing their own opinion— and not a malevolent paid troll spreading deplorable fake news for profit from Macedonia— they'll have every opportunity to answer the challenge with a reasoned reply.

Some people seem to think that "Adorable!" belongs to me, though I certainly didn't make up that word. I made up "macedorable" not just for myself, but for Universal Hub and its readers to possibly use as the flag Jack asked for, if they wish:
   IMAGE(http://www.universalhub.com/files/uhub215_0_0_1_1.png)

    • The flag can be just the single word: macedorable.
    • It's not intended for non-anonymous (verified) posters, even when they're trolling.
    • Capitalization is optional — it's not a proper noun.
    • Punctuation may be included if desired, for example to express exclamation or uncertainty.

Often times, less is more. If you can express your thoughts within a single 64-character subject line, there's no need to write the body of a post. Most powerful of all, if you can say everything in a single word, it will speak volumes, in but an instant!
    IMAGE(http://www.universalhub.com/files/uhub215_0_0_1_1.png)

Trick: The commenting interface won't allow you to leave the comment body totally blank; you've got to put something there, even if it's just a period. My trick to fulfill that requirement is to put an empty link to nothing. It makes the line height a little smaller (again going with my "less is more" style).

I'm strange in more ways than one, and I imagine most other people are quite happy using "n/t" or just a period for their empty posts; I'm just sharing my own trick in case anyone wants to know. There's probably other tags that would work, but the "a" tag seemed the simplest and easiest to use. It's just this— with no spaces before, after, or within the tag:

Having followed the media and politics my whole life, I believe Trump voters enjoyed voting against the media as much as we enjoyed voting for him. I tend to agree with him on ending the investigation into Hillary. While any cop on the beat could get an indictment against her, it's time to move forward.

I socialize with police from all agencies and have heard of no real Trump related attacks, other than the two project-dwellers on the T at JFK station last year who have probably never voted. By choosing JFK station, perhaps they were motivated by the Kennedy's racism, voting against Civil Rights and bugging the phone of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. That's as absurd as saying Trump had anything to do with it. I believe the latest fake attack was at Bowling Green University, the second faked there.

As the media rapidly loses credibility, PLEASE continue to report on this phony wave of hate. You might also want to flash the "French Toast Alert" for a blizzard in July. Equally comical. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

And when a white guy beats and pisses on a Hispanic man and said "Donald Trump was right" I take him at his word that he is a Trump supporter, just as the KKK, neo nazis and David Duke are all proud Trump supporters. That is the party you RSVP'd "yes" to.
