Trumpland, MA: Neo-Nazi sends a postcard to a visiting Harvard Law professor

The note to Sanford Levinson is every bit as charming as you'd expect. Mailed from England.

Wish she'd said where it was sent from
The stationary is from England. Would like to know if that's where it's mailed from.
The other half
Macedonia?
In one of her FB
comments, she said that it was sent from England.
Real Effort!
Too often bigots aren't willing to show any real effort beyond a few FB rants and maybe a re-tweet with a racist meme. So it's heartwarming to see someone take the time to spew their hatespeech short hand and spend the money to mail it across the pond.
He's Trump, he's Trump, he's Trump, he's in your head.
So far...it's from England. So, how many electoral votes do they have? Just how far has Trump reached?
He's Trump, he's Trump, he's Trump, he's in your head.
Get a friggin grip. I'm not sure you can pin this one on our next President.
In whose head?
You're the one who's obsessively stalking these threads and braying "HE'S IN YOUR HEAD! HE'S IN YOUR HEAD!" every time another hate incident is reported. Wouldn't you just love it if people said, "Oh gosh, I guess we'd better stop talking about bias incidents because some semiliterate random told us to 'Get a friggin[sic] grip' and said that Trump is in our heads"? Please, go elsewhere and try your sandbox manipulations on some small gullible children -- grownups are talking here.
Heh.
Grownups were talking here, until November eighth. Now it's every incident, real or imagined, self inflicted or legitimate is an automatic hate crime perpetrated by President -Elect Trump or one of his evil minions.
Oh dear
Sounds like someone started a belching contest at the kids table again!
It couldn't have gone anywhere in the first place
IF IT iS STATIONARY
Your blog has lost so much
Your blog has lost so much quality. All it ever is now is racism claims.
If you're going to lie, you need to at least be creative
While I could do "all racism all the time," there's certainly more than enough going on these days, I doubt you really read the site much, because if you did, you'd notice the other stuff I write about.
Still, on the off chance you are a regular, you know how much it pains me, as a liberal, to hear criticism like yours. A complete stab in the heart it is. So for folks like you, I've created A very special Universal Hub - No election news, ever. I'm sure you'll be happier there, if, in fact, you actually are a regular visitor to the site.
UHub Is So Whole Grained, Even The Whitebread Page Is Nutritious
And.... wait for it....
....ADORABLE!
Please don't let this anon
Please don't let this anon talk you into toning down these types of stories (not that I think you would). It's important that people see that this garbage is happening in our own backyard. Thanks for the great work that you do here, Adam.
Thanks, Adam!
You're actually preaching to the choir to me RE the election and I applaud your Trumpland category. (I've posted on several stories.)
However, I'm trying to make a conscious effort to not sweat the details and this version of your site will help.
Keep it up, Adam!
Keep it up, Adam! The filth that were inspired by Trump to crawl up out of the sewer would love it if you and others stopped calling out these hate-right incidents. The rest of us appreciate your providing a useful service.
What, are you joking?
Trump-inspired racist incidents are happening across the US by the hundreds, soon to be thousands, even in true-blue MA.
You don't think that's worth reporting in a blog focused on local news? Or are you just uncomfortable with the notion that Trump owns a lot of responsibility for enabling and encouraging these hateful assholes?
No,
I think each and every one of those asshats is responsible for their own behavior and should be strung up by their toes if proven guilty. I don't subscribe to "the devil made him do it" as a valid theory of mind.
Incidentally, wasn't Obama supposed to be putting down the revolt by the Georgia Militia at this stage of the game?
Might be easier to just chalk it up to a few asshats
if there weren't hundreds of these incidents being reported nationwide, which suggests that there are actually thousands more happening but going unreported.
This, after a national campaign of 18 months by a candidate who got his start with birtherism, launched his candidacy by slurring Latinos, advocated wholesale prejudice against an entire religion, routinely re-broadcast anti-Semitic white-nationalist memes, picked a nasty homophobe as his veep, got caught out bragging about disgusting date-rapey behavior when he thought no one was watching, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera.
Bannon is in the White House. Trump pretended that he had no idea who David Duke was, and just now came out with the lamest, most mealy-mouthed renunciation of his most ardent neo-Nazi Sieg-heiling supporters.
White boy, please. Who exactly do you think you're fooling?
Who said a few?
I've been told about how racist we white boys are for the past twenty+ years. And that's only because that's when I was old enough to understand I was being accused of something. Only difference is, the R lamp is on in the white house so all those same asshats can now be blamed on one man instead of on vague "institutional racism."
Or do you mean to tell me it was all hunky dory before June 2015?
David Duke himself said Trump
David Duke himself said Trump has inspired him recently with his racist dialogue and actions.
Reverend
Wright Reverend Wright Reverend Wright.
Oh, it's only Obama that we're not supposed to judge by his least palatable supporters?
At least one HUGE differences
Rev. Wright does not belong to an organization with a long, well-documented and recent history of bigotry, terrorism and murder.
Also, are you asking us to believe that this is the very first time you've ever mentioned Rev. Wright? Because I'd bet the mortgage that you're being more than a bit hypocritical here, and have been quite happy to imply or outright claim that Wright's intemperate speech reflected a parallel fault in the character of the current President.
(Also, I am a 'white boy' half a century old, and have had no problem making the distinction between those accused of racism and myself. But you seem to take it personally. Or maybe you just find people pointing it out in your presence more often. Hmmm...)
He's in denial
Read some of his posts. He doesn't want to consider that the last time such nonsense erupted in a country of European origins, it was people like him who were targeted for extermination.
In fact, such targeting won him refugee status as a child.
No, that would be
Bill Ayers who's got the terrorism and murder on his resume.
I'm not sure what the rest of your post is supposed to mean? I didn't like the fact that Obama hung around with those characters back in '08. I don't like it now. I voted against Obama both times, partly because of that (we're allowed to do that).
But I wasn't out there in the woods of New Hampshire plotting a revolution either and I don't recall claiming that the sky was falling.
But somehow I'm a hypocrite for calling you lefties out for going overboard? Huh?
Keep up the talk
As an immigrant, religious minority person, I'm sure that sounding like a rightwing nut job will most certainly protect you from these lovely AltRight people.
In your head. Maybe.
Learn to America
No, it ain't my politics (or yours) that protects you from the nuts.
It's the rule of law.
And if that fails (God forbid), then it's the guns me and everyone else is allowed to own.
See, back in the old country (many of them actually), the pogroms happened because the rabble needed to be roused to distract them from opposing the government's klepto tendencies AND the Jews or the Gypsies or the $SCAPEGOAT_MINORITY were unarmed.
Or more to the point...why do you think the klan doesn't hold their rallies in "inner cities?" Probably the same reason the neo nazis were "persuaded" to not march down main st in Skokie, Ill.
Rule of Law
Okay.
We now have a president who has made it clear what he thinks of the rule of law, both in word and now his deeds.
Also remember that the "Alt Right" of 1930s Germany didn't let people own their own firearms, either.
Honest question Swirly
As a firearms enthusiast, do you think owning a gun would have been easier, harder, or no difference if Hillary had won rather than Trump.
Never mind if you believe a word of what he said to the NRA. Just in terms of how the government works given who appoints whom to where. Will it be easier, will it be harder, or will it make no difference?
I Admire Even When You Don't Agree, You're A Gentleman About It
Rather than hitting and running, Roman, you're willing to conduct an honest dialog with others. That means a lot — it's a quality seen too infrequently on other Internet sites.
It's constructive as well — we'd never be able to exchange ideas with each other if we all agreed about everything!
Thank you
I do make a point to try.
I'm an ethnic redneck
I'd have no worries either way.
Of course
Why answer the question when you can dodge it with passive aggressive identity politics?
You are a piece of work.
Happy Thanksgiving. I'm going back to cooking now.
You Fail To See The Difference Between Supporter And Associate
Anyone can be a supporter, but that doesn't mean the person they're supporting shares any of their views on anything. Acquaintances or even friends are not the same as associates.
By comparison, an associate is someone a person chooses to interact and/or work with to achieve common goals. Such a choice is made because of shared views and ideas about the things the associates will be working to advance.
The Reverend Wright was an acquaintance or perhaps even a friend of President Obama, but that doesn't mean the two men had any shared opinions about running the nation.
You and I disagree on many topics, but I'm still willing to be friends. If you came to my house for dinner, it wouldn't automatically mean that we agreed on anything (except perhaps, the pleasure of sharing a meal). Such a friendship wouldn't mean that you were associating yourself with any of my beliefs, nor I of yours.
The president-elect is actively choosing the people he wants to associate himself with because he does share their beliefs, and wants them to help influence the direction his administration will go. Supporters may become associates, but only if they're actively chosen.
I know you guys blocked that whole episode out
but I'm pretty sure Obama and Wright were more than just ships that passed in the night. At least before Obama ran for national office.
If That Were True, The President Chose To Dis-Associate Himself
Throughout our lives, we all have a chance to gain wisdom through experience. People with who we may share some interests, can turn out to be quite different than they appeared at first, once you get to know them a little better.
Mr. Obama may have remained friends with the reverend, but he clearly dis-associated himself from any of his extreme views. He most certainly was not one of his top advisors! The president-elect is doing exactly the opposite.
Pics or it didn't happen
Obama said the right words when tape of the good reverend made it on CNN. I didn't really believe that in his heart he didn't remain unhealthily skeptical of what some would derisively call the institutions of white America, but that's my own opinion.
Trump said the same kinds of words. You don't have to believe him either. But Bannon's not an white supremacist just because the internet says he is. So either a pic of him in a white hood or a debate on actual policy, please.
Pics? How About Some Audio From 2011?
Note: the clip (and warning about Mr. Bannon) was posted two months ago!
An even earlier warning from three months ago!
( If you listen to all of this second one, in today's context, it's really quite astonishing! )
He said a bad word?
That's your dead girl or a live boy? That he said the word 'dyke' on radio and therefore he's the second coming of Hitler?
I gotta say...not the strongest indictment. And I actually didn't disagree too much with the content of what he said in that clip. Would it have been better if he'd used to word 'radical feminist' instead?
It's Not Just One Bad Word, It's Everything He Says
He's a divider, when the nation desperately needs unity.
You say, "Bad word', I say, "Homophobic slur in the mouth of a
straight man, regardless of the target's sexuality."
Potato, potahto? Maybe might want to check with a lesbian friend to see what she thinks of it.
No, I say
that the PC left seems to expend more energy on getting worked up about the words used than they do on making an effort on substance. Here you are, spending seconds and sucking down oxygen complaining about the words that he used, and the rest of the message and your (I assume) reasoned counter argument is completely ignored.
You and I can't have a civilized conversation about whether or not the man had a point about the left having a grudge against conservative women because you're hung up on the word 'dyke.'
If you haven't figured it out yet...he's playing you. You don't get a word in edgewise because you're off chasing the shiny red herring.
Yeah, it's just words, right? Why get worked up about
mere words?
Except that words matter, especially when they're used casually, the way Bannon does in this example, to demean a person based on their sexual preference, or to impugn them by associating them with that sexual preference (or as Bannon often does, for their religion, or skin color, or ethnicity.)
Political correctness admittedly can be ridiculous in certain academic settings, but reflexive antipathy to it has become the right's lazy, despicable excuse to use bigoted language in everyday life outside of fringe-left college settings.
Using the word "dyke" the way Bannon does isn't a brave stand against the excesses of a tiny minority of misguided college professors and sophomoric students to limit free speech. It's a mean-spirited, hateful insult meant to degrade a human being based on some inherent quality of their person.
Protected free speech? Certainly. Revealing of loathsome bigotry? Yeah, you just showed us the kind of small, narrow-minded person that you are.
Humans with a shred of empathy recognize the derisive use of "PC" for the ridiculous fig leaf that it is. If you think that "dyke" the way Bannon uses it is just a harmless word, you're not a bold defender the First Amendment: you're just a backward, ignorant asshole.
I can do the 2am thing too
wherein I will tell you that more people than you may like to admit grew up at a time and place where 'gay' was a schoolyard insult that had next to nothing to do with sexual preference or normative statements about sexual preference and all to do with being a word that you threw around without a hint of political context.
I had maybe one high school friend with whom I've since lost tough who came out as gay in college. Guess what: he still used that kind of language when he was a kid. I don't think he gave it as much thought as you're giving it.
Some people just talk that way. And will continue to. Doesn't make them nazis.
I repeat. You being offended is your internal state of mind. Does not imply anything about the internal state of mind of the speaker, especially one not holding a conversation with you.
Anyway, since we're still wasting breath on words and not on the meaning conveyed with them and the others we're not discussing, shall I simplify matters and get myself a 'Deplorable' bumper sticker to plaster over my Johnson/Weld sticker?
Common privileged straight white man mistake:
thinking that an oppressed minority trying to defuse the power of a slur by co-opting it -- ironically using the n-word, dyke, queer, etc., among themselves -- gives you a pass to use it yourself, free of its original hateful connotations.
Missing that obvious point -- like, say, trying to excuse Bannon's odious use of "dyke" -- reflects either bigotry or blind ignorance. Neither is a good look for you.
(As for 2am, I'm a restaurant critic. I work nights.)
Like a dog with a bone
Words are just words. Kids just use them. It ain't any deeper than that. If it is to you, then that's only because of what you have going on inside your mind, not because of some universal natural law.
You can say 'fuck the n****rs' or 'let's repeal the 13th Amendment' and they mean the same thing, but the first one is somehow more objectionable by your reasoning?
Yes, that 's the only two places words exist: in your mind, and
out in the universe.
There's no such thing as civilized societal norms that socially proscribe the use of words that historically have been used to degrade, bully and belittle oppressed minorities based on their race, religion, ethnicity, sexual preference, etc.
In your mind, calling a woman whose politics you disagree with a "dyke" because you think that's an insult is perfectly cool! Lighten up, man: they're just words.
You can't really be that much of a clueless prick, can you?
Of course there are norms
For example, calling a man a 'clueless prick' when you don't agree with him is OK, but--and I'm going out on a limb here--calling a woman a 'dumb cunt' when you disagree with her is not. Because sexism.
I get it.
You still haven't told me whether I should get that bumper sticker.
Bannon is not a white supremacist, racist, anti-Semitic
misogynist because the Internet says so. It's evident in the things he says, and the "news" site that he edited, which continues down the same hate-filled track now that he's in the White House. A few choice tidbits: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/15/us/politics/stephen-bannon-breitbart-w...
He's like Joe Goebbels, only slovenly.
Saying that someone is "Alt-Right" and not a "Nazi"
is equivalent to saying that a guy who has sex with his goats is an "Alt-Farmer".
Source
Maybe we're from different planets
I see a lot of stuff I agree with in your link.
I certainly don't see a smiley face plastered over the gas chambers. If you do...well that's your problem.
Trouble with the echo chamber isn't just that you only hear what you want to hear. Sometimes you get trapped scaring yourself shitless for no reason.
What echo chamber?
Those are the words that Bannon said, and the words written in articles of the publication he edited.
I'm not asking anyone to read some liberal-media interpretation or analysis of those words. They speak very clearly for themselves.
If you've got some spin on a headline that includes "Renegade Jew" in a way that softens its blatant anti-Semitism, or any of the other patent bigotry in Bannon's own words or Breitbart articles -- like giving a forum to heinous shit-stains like Milo Yiannopoulos, who incited racist and sexist attacks on Leslie Jones -- I'm open to hearing it.
Well the by line
on that Renegade Jew thing was a guy named David Horowitz. Do with that what you will.
And he closes with
Which kinda puts it into more context, doesn't it?
Macedorable!
As So Often Is The Case, You Heard It First At Universal Hub!
Like the trashbag Walsh insult
...Only found on uhub. Think about that. Take your time.
You take YOUR time
You take YOUR time. Be careful you don't strain something.
"Macedorable" Is Not An Insult — It's A Flag And A Challenge
I thought of the word in response to Jack's post, asking Adam for a way for readers to flag anonymous trolls, as an alternative to banning anonymous posts entirely.
Macedorable is essentially a sarcastic application of adorable, but applied specifically towards malevolent, anonymous (non-verified) trolls. Trolls aren't individuals who'll engage in discussing issues with you; they like to hit and run. They're hoping for people to get angry, but responding to them is always futile. The best response is to not feed the troll.
Indeed, I've used my "Adorable!" to end subthreads that were going nowhere — either at a point where nothing else can be said, or in response to something so outrageous that no words could sufficiently address it. In all instances, the person I was responding to never replied.
By flagging a post "Macedorable!" it alerts other readers that you suspect it's probably an anonymous troll, so they may choose not to feed it. If the poster is actually a real person expressing their own opinion— and not a malevolent paid troll spreading deplorable fake news for profit from Macedonia— they'll have every opportunity to answer the challenge with a reasoned reply.
Some people seem to think that "Adorable!" belongs to me, though I certainly didn't make up that word. I made up "macedorable" not just for myself, but for Universal Hub and its readers to possibly use as the flag Jack asked for, if they wish:
Often times, less is more. If you can express your thoughts within a single 64-character subject line, there's no need to write the body of a post. Most powerful of all, if you can say everything in a single word, it will speak volumes, in but an instant!
Trick: The commenting interface won't allow you to leave the comment body totally blank; you've got to put something there, even if it's just a period. My trick to fulfill that requirement is to put an empty link to nothing. It makes the line height a little smaller (again going with my "less is more" style).
I'm strange in more ways than one, and I imagine most other people are quite happy using "n/t" or just a period for their empty posts; I'm just sharing my own trick in case anyone wants to know. There's probably other tags that would work, but the "a" tag seemed the simplest and easiest to use. It's just this— with no spaces before, after, or within the tag: <a></a>
If Americans would just stop
If Americans would just stop talking about racism you think it would just disappear, eh? We should try that with other forms of terrorism.
Make UHub Great Again
Yes, it's almost as if something big happened about two weeks ago and the fallout from that continues to propagate through the local news and events.
If you're offended by the drop in quality and infinite claims of racism, then you should check out this other local blog that's doing a better job of covering hyperlocal Boston and Cambridge news instead. Here's a link to a story they did on the recent discovery of drugs at the Hong Kong restaurant in Cambridge and another one on redevelopment of the old White Rock building in Roxbury.
Like "university"
"Universal" implies eclecticism.
Deal with it.
Racist actions post Trump election
Thank you for keeping a focus on these acts of cowardice. I can only imagine what kind of sad, insecure little loser would think to mail a postcard to harass a professor across the ocean, let alone any law abiding, productive person of good will, minding their own business. These fools who are bored by the coverage - well they can't imagine just how fast a population can turn ugly and start terrorizing their own citizens. For those who don't think Trump has anything to do with it....really? He's the enabler. He's made it all seem okay. Go ahead. You can treat anyone like dirt. It's a path to success, isn't it? And wait until he really can't deliver on anything for real, and he starts pointing the finger of blame - it's the Muslims! It's the Jews! It's the Mexicans! It's the blacks! It's "pick your group". It won't be good. Super scary.
All these racism claims!
These racism claims make it seem like people of color experience racism every day! Please, let's keep it down to one or two a year so the people who live in all-white worlds can keep on not hearing about it.
Meanwhile, in Obamaland
http://bluelivesmatter.blue/
Meaning
Nothing. Nothing to do with this, anyway. Cop mortality is still dominated by motor vehicle accidents and suicides. Why not have a convenience store clerk site as well? Tree worker or fishing, too? Construction? Farm workers? All occupational deaths matter!
Then there is this locally produced filth: https://www.bppa.org/pax/
"Occupational Deaths"
OK.
Rationalizing murder
Is fun. Maybe we start categorizing cyclists deaths as "mishaps".
You mean
Like Pax Centurion does? Like the "blue lives" people do when they justify extrajudicial execution of citizens they don't like?
Go on.
You bring that up, huh?
Interesting thing about many of the men killing cops this year. Such as this guy. Not exactly Obama supporters.
Keep up the Trump bashing, you're helping him
Having followed the media and politics my whole life, I believe Trump voters enjoyed voting against the media as much as we enjoyed voting for him. I tend to agree with him on ending the investigation into Hillary. While any cop on the beat could get an indictment against her, it's time to move forward.
I socialize with police from all agencies and have heard of no real Trump related attacks, other than the two project-dwellers on the T at JFK station last year who have probably never voted. By choosing JFK station, perhaps they were motivated by the Kennedy's racism, voting against Civil Rights and bugging the phone of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. That's as absurd as saying Trump had anything to do with it. I believe the latest fake attack was at Bowling Green University, the second faked there.
As the media rapidly loses credibility, PLEASE continue to report on this phony wave of hate. You might also want to flash the "French Toast Alert" for a blizzard in July. Equally comical. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
Trump had no say in the
Trump had no say in the matter. Multiple FBI investigations lead to nothing. Your guy had to pay up $25 million just this week. Said he would never settle. Said he always wins. What do you call paying $25 million because you are a fraud? I call that a loser criminal who settled.
And when a white guy beats and pisses on a Hispanic man and said "Donald Trump was right" I take him at his word that he is a Trump supporter, just as the KKK, neo nazis and David Duke are all proud Trump supporters. That is the party you RSVP'd "yes" to.
but they haven't
"While any cop on the beat could get an indictment against her, it's time to move forward. " -- But for someone who has been investigated by the US congress, the FBI, and special prosecutors, none have been able to obtain an indictment. Now please tell us how it is because it is rigged and that is the only reason she hasn't been convicted of a crime.
"Welcome to my bubble, where 'the media' has no credibility,
I draw conclusions only from the people I know well enough to talk to, ignore folks whose job it is to compile the stats that show that thousands of these attacks going on nationwide, and cannot connect two giant dots standing right next to each other."
In other words, cool anecdotes, bro. Too bad all of "the media" is so untrustworthy these days. Good thing you still have access to the Two Tin Cans with String network.
Every time I see one of your
Every time I see one of your posts I am blown away by the fact that somebody can simultaneously be so ignorant and so arrogant. Your ability to vomit out paragraph after paragraph of total nonsense with extreme confidence is astounding.
