Somebody burglarized St. Anthony's Shrine downtown

St. Anthony's Shrine on Arch Street has posted photos of the well-dressed guy they say broke into the shrine between 4 and 6 a.m. yesterday. If he looks familiar, you know the number to call.

WBZ has a photo of the sort of electronic-payment device the guy managed to wrest from its wall mount at the shrine.
Not sure what the thief thought he was stealing.
Those things are usually dumb network terminals with no local storage, not something he could get useful payment-card data from.
Then again, he was clueless enough not to know he was looking straight into a surveillance camera. Would have been better off digging around for a cache of fancy single-malt Scotch. Roman Catholic priests are usually discriminating drinkers.

to rip of a Church, with heavy outreach to the homeless, during Christmas season. I suspect orphanages will be the next target.

No doubt he's an addict, folks, a desperate drug-dependent person who is in the throes of a medical problem. He's not an evil person, he's a victim. Shame on anyone who judges HIM!
No excuse

As is most often the case online, the sarcasm failed to make its point, and appeared to make the opposite one.
Culpability is not excused
If the thief's sense of morality is compromised by addiction to alcohol, coke or whatever that does not release him from culpability. The point of recognizing alcoholism and drug addiction as a disease of the mind is to be open to a) understanding the genesis of the condition and b) helping the person to not continue being in the throes of the condition. But culpability for actions remains and restitution, reconciliation and rehabilitation are still necessary.
There are few truly evil people who just want to wreck havoc in the world. When somebody does something as low as stealing from a church or stealing from poor there is usually an underlying reason. On the other hand even when a rich person steals from others because he has the money to create endless law suits there still is an underlying reason. Unfortunately he has the money to shield himself from the consequences of his actions, especially since our legal system has evolved to being one where the person with the most money and the best ability to ride out a law suit marathon is the one who wins.
No shame on you for defending him
Shame on you for defending him! Addict of not - his behavior is and never will be acceptable. I will judge him all day long like I judge you for being an idiot! Why should anyone care about a low life while the rest of us are trying to earn a decent wage and put food on the table for our families - the right way!
