BPS students plan Monday walkout to protest Trump

BPS high-school students are organizing a walkout on Monday that could see students rally on the Common at 2 p.m. before marching on the State House and rallying in front of City Hall:

Donald J. Trump will be the next president of the United States and we have the right to protest and stand together against the inexcusable statements he has made about, and the harmful policies he promises to enact against, immigrants, Muslims, black Americans, the disabled, the LGBTQ+ community and women.

WALK-OUT on Monday, December 5th to send a loud and clear message to Donald J. Trump and to ensure our local elected officials commit to protecting and uplifting all residents of Massachusetts for the next four years.

The protests, whose organizers include some of the students who led the spring walkouts against budget cuts. They could be joined by protsters from UMass Boston.

BPS e-mailed parents today to caution them about the walkout:

While BPS believes in the importance of student voice and advocacy, we discourage students from missing class time and leaving school without permission during the day. Students who miss classroom time will be marked absent from classes they miss on Monday. ...

Student safety is a top priority at the Boston Public Schools. That is why we are notifying you and asking you to please encourage your child to remain in school.

So BPS students are learning to disrespect the votes of others and have disdain for Democracy.

Guess what? Your candidate doesn't always win. Accepting loss, respecting other opinions, and developing coping skills are a vital part of life. Things which these kids aren't learning.

These kids aren't even old enough to vote and a protest at city hall and the statehouse will change nothing.

This is an embarrassment. BPS students are being used as pawns increasingly in various marches during the school day. No wonder the kids aren't learning at some schools. Their teachers are spending all day preaching political campaigns instead educating.

Go ahead, read the First Amendment. It's really short, shouldn't take you more than a minute, but it's really important to the functioning of an actual democracy. The other amendments, like the 14th, are harder to understand, so I won't ask you to read those.

Bravo to these kids for taking the constitution seriously and for advocating for what they believe in. And now that they're on notice from BPS that their absences will have consequences (yes, being marked absent has consequences when you're only allowed so many absences per semester), they're getting a lesson in the importance of accepting consequences for their actions.

As for teachers, nope. The kids organized their protests last year all by themselves (yes, some teachers and SEIU members attended to make sure they stayed safe, but that's not the same). I realize it's hard for some people to accept, but high school students can be pretty smart and organized all on their own.

IIRC, Boston Schools students missed lunch and up to two post-lunch classes during the last walkout which is less than what they miss when they take a sick day. Does you job let you take a sick day?

After what Trump said about "Afffffrican-Americans" and Hispanics I think a lot of the kids in Boston Schools have good reason to attend. 63% of BPS self-identify as one or the other. I suspect kids who are not personally threatened by Trump's rhetoric are just as likely to be offended by it.

so you can yell FIRE in a movie theatre and that's protected by the first?

it's not really about the student's right to protest or be heard but the skipping school part.

it's a shame they didn't walk out to protest charter schools. would be nice to know the teacher's opinion if the topic were different.

Never has been. Anon has had his entire life to learn this, but has not. It's a republic, with proportional representation and a whole lot of major distortions to the democratic model*. This is not just semantics. If it were a democracy, Hillary Clinton would be getting ready to lead the country, or maybe it would be some other person entirely.

* Incomplete list of distortions:
- Caucuses
- Distributed-day, as opposed to same-day primaries
- Electoral College
- The Senate

A majority of voters did not vote for Clinton; same for Trump, most voters did not support him.

>If it were a democracy, Hillary Clinton would be getting ready to lead the country

That's a common misconception but you can't expect to have these same election results in a totally different election system. If the presidential election were a popular vote then the candidates would have campaigned very differently and voter turnout would also have been effected as well with more people voting for Trump in states like CA and MA which historically go Democrat.

up

Yeah but you'd also have all the metro-city blue votes from states that always go red - my hometown county in the Midwest goes completely blue but their votes are just as wasted as the trump votes up here in MA.

Their unionized (i have no issue with unions) teachers and their union who heavily backed Hillary haven't in any way shape or form encouraged this action. Kinda like when students walked out over budgetary issues but never mentioned the fact that their teachers increasing pay and taxing benefits were what was consuming the vast majority of the annual allotment.

Remind you, we have over a BILLION dollar budget, and unfortunately students in Boston aren't the benefactors, the teacher are.

up

And if so, did you take part in any of the discussions on the cuts that were being planned at the high school level (which were going to get hit hardest because there just wasn't much to cut in the elementary schools)?

And do you know for a fact that teachers are pushing kids to do this, or are you just letting your hatred of unions do your talking for you?

The saddest thing about all this post election BS is that if half this effort was used to get out the Left to vote on Election Day in a few battle ground states, we would not be having this discussion. You (the democrats) have no one to blame but yourselves. Now shut up and deal with the consequences of your failure.

The electoral college is only getting any publicity because the Dowager Queen of Chappaqua lost. Oh, and just for the hell of it, Trump may be right in claiming a million fake votes.
This election may be rife with voter fraud. OK, some facts, since you prize 'thinking for yourself'.

24 million voter registrations are no longer valid or are significantly inaccurate.
More than 1.8 million deceased individuals are listed as voters.
Approximately 2.75 million people have registrations in more than one state.*

Secretary Clinton lost the election. If there was a shred of justice in the Justice Department, voter fraud would be investigated.

You realize there's more to submitting a citation than just mentioning it, right? Did you actually read it? It's not that long.

The report Trump and you are misquoting is this one - Inaccurate, Costly, and Inefficient

Unfortunately, it does not say what you claim it does. While it does say that as many as 1.8 deceased voters remain on the rolls, it does not claim that there is any evidence that these registrations have been used fraudulently. Rather, Pew said that this and other problems are evidence of the need to upgrade voter registration systems. (To wit - the report also notes that as many as 51 million Americans eligble to vote are not registered.)

Here's a fuller rundown on Trump's claims vs. the reality on Factcheck.org.

up
Voting closed 0

24 million voter registrations are no longer valid or are significantly inaccurate.
More than 1.8 million deceased individuals are listed as voters.
Approximately 2.75 million people have registrations in more than one state.*

Taking these in a slightly different order:

More than 1.8 million deceased individuals are listed as voters.

Have you had anyone near you die recently? Was your first thought "I have to notify the election department"? Was it even your 47th thought, 3 weeks later?

Most deceased voters eventually fall off the rolls because they become inactive (don't cast any vote for x amount of time) or because of results from a municipal or town census.

But the number of deceased voters on the rolls is irrelevant because the overwhelming majority of those cast no vote at all (no, I have no citation but only a buffoon would believe otherwise). Maybe you have some statistic on how many deceased voters who remain on the rolls actually vote?

Approximately 2.75 million people have registrations in more than one state.

Much the same could be said here. Did you notify your local election department when you moved out of a state?

In Massachusetts at least, the registration form has a space for previous address. Presumably, this is used to delete your old address when you re-register after moving within the state. But does Massachusetts notify your old state that you've registered here? Maybe, maybe not. Do all states do this? Who knows?

But again, it's only relevant if someone takes the opportunity to actually vote in both states or if someone else attempts to use your no longer valid registration in your old state to cast a vote. My bet is that neither of those scenarios happens very much.

24 million voter registrations are no longer valid or are significantly inaccurate.

But again, do any of these actually vote or attempt to vote? Also, if they do, what evidence is there that they are skewed to a particular party or candidate?

The voter rolls will never be 100% accurate. But until you show me significant numbers of proven reports of voters voting fraudulently, there is no real problem.

up
Voting closed 0

Please show us the evidence of millions of illegal votes. If you can't then shut up and stop making shit up. I wish Trump would do the same. He is against recounts because he knows voter fraud is just another conspiracy theory he is wrong about like Obama being born in Africa. Trump is a whiny 70 year old baby who can't handle the fact that he got 2 million less votes.

Even in this crazy, mixed up, cashless world, which I'm sure you don't participate in because you're a Goddamn Capitalist and Goddamn Capitalists like pulling out their huge wads of bills like a Goddamn Boss, I sometimes deposit checks and make withdrawals, and not just at one of them there fancy ATM thingmabobs. And yet, even before I got to know the tellers and officials at our local branch of our middlish sized bank, even when I've gone to another branch, even when we had accounts at big regional chains, some of them with green logos, I have never been asked to show ID. Sometimes I've had to present my ATM card, or slide it through a reader, but my official gubmint ID? Nah, never. Must be my trustworthy face. Or maybe I need an account at some rapacious Too Big to Fail Bank.

Really, you have to show your ID when you cash a check? Oh, man, that sucks. Let me know if you need the name of a bank that doesn't make you do that.

I was raised in a trailer court, but I have a net worth over a million. I own property in two states. Paying cash for two kids in college while saving maximal amounts for retirement. Perfect credit rating, too.

But, hey, what do I know about money - I ride my bike to work. I have a single car. I have a modest home that I tend to work on myself. I don't make a grand show off of my wealth with luxury cars and high rent zip codes and gold pseudoclassical toilet fixtures just so that you will know how rich and special I am.

I guess in the Kardashian age, it is very difficult for some to comprehend the traditional American and socialist idea of two educated people from working-class backgrounds earning a very solid living due to their educational attainment. Or the classic American value of frugality - the traditional practice of living in a comfortable but non-ostentatious or non-wasteful way(when one's means are more than sufficient for basic needs) as to be able to pay cash for nearly everything.

p.s.: if it makes you feel better, my union-affiliated credit union did ask for ID when I picked up a cashier's check in lieu of cash to purchase my new car. Not unreasonable.

Once again, we can read the Uhub feed and see multiple reports of Bostonians shot and stabbed. How many comments? Almost none (zero in most cases).

But give people a chane to bash trump and it's like a comment tsunami.

So let's do the math. People are losing their minds over a president-elect who hasnt done anything at this point. Yet people are litteraly being killed in our city and the same readers on this site seem to have nothing to say about it. Hmmm

Not to mention that many of those being effected by violence in Boston are people of color. Maybe all of the folks here that seem to "care" so much about their fellow Bostonians can put their efforts into something close to home. Volunteer, mentor, etc. News flash, trump won and we have about 50 days until he takes office, yet in the meantime, there are real issues facing our city.

Perhaps it just WAY easier to focus on bashing trump and continuing to further the divide between us. While I agree that we should have the right to protest, kids need to be in school, and perhaps build a dialogue in their own schools. And has anyone given thought that there just may be trump supports in bps (gasp)? I guess they just get shafted, then likely singled out for not participating? What is the lesson in that?

Let's see if this actually gets posted.

Do you really care about violence in Boston? Prove it: Do something about it. Go volunteer for some group working to end violence or give kids a way out of the prison pipeline. Let me know. Adam, as administrator of this site. I think you will find it hard to argue that your posts regarding violence in this city receive almost no comments. And that is a shame because it is real violence, and crime that have a real impact on people in our city.

And all of the folks on this site that love to comment about hate, and human rights, an loving, and community, and peace - have NOTHING to say about it.

But give those same folks the chance to spout off about a guy who isn't even president yet? Well we then have 100-comment threads, and marches, and protests, and walkouts, and outrage.

It seems we have some highly outspoken folks on here. I just wish that they could also show as much fire for issues in our own city as they do for things that have not even happened yet.

Don't get me wrong, I am no trump superfan, but when hundreds of people can gather in Rozzie square to rally against trump, can't that same energy be used to combat violence, poverty, drug abuse in our own city?

And for the record, I am a lifelong Bostonian, and care deeply about crime and safety in out city. "Concern-trolling"? One need not "troll" to much to see that seemingly "concerned" neighbors on here are happy to comment on perceived injustices, but either don't care, or can the bothered to comment t on real violence and safety issues happening around them.

up
Voting closed 0

can't that same energy be used to combat violence, poverty, drug abuse in our own city?

Don't mistake people making or not making comments on a Web site with the rest of the world. Don't think the fact that I covered a unity rally in Roslindale means people just go home every night and stare slackjawed at their TV until they fall asleep.

There are plenty of people who are working to combat violence, poverty and drug abuse in our own city. That you might not read about their efforts is the fault of the media (including me). That they don't comment here might be because after spending long hours doing that the last thing they want to do is post about it here. Or they don't know the site exists. Or they don't feel like getting into inane discussions about how they don't exist.

Again, if you're looking for a specific ways to combat these problems, just say the word. You could start with the Louis D. Brown Peace Institute or the Pine Street Inn.
