West Roxbury residents no longer have to drive all the way into Dedham for their sex toys

Wild Orchid in West Roxbury

This is not your father's West Roxbury: Wild Orchid, which opened last month on VFW Parkway inbound just past the Dedham line, offers a full complement of the sultry stuff you need, plus smokes. Just do a U-turn past where the other McDonald's used to be, by the car wash.

Sorry, but, no, this location is not "the heart" of West Roxbury.

It is the heart of the Parkway red light district now.

The one kitty-corner from St. T's?

Yeah, that didn't last long.

I was never old enough to go in though. There where quite a few, Hella's Video had a back room.

The video shop you mention was repeatedly vandalized (rocks through the windows and buckets of paint splashed on the building) until they closed. It was like a scene out of Frankenstein with angry villagers and their torches. The fact that a vocal, violent minority was allowed to drive a legal business away still pisses me off.

(And that is the backdrop which Wild Orchid faces by opening in WR.)

and now all those vigilantes are happily at home watching porn on their laptops.

to call Fox News porn.

I don't agree with the vandalism, but a shop like that, less than 1000 feet from two schools and a church was never a good idea. The folks that opened it must have had zero knowledge of the neighborhood. From what I can recall, it wasn't there long - and wouldn't have been despite the rocks/paint etc.

The tail end, perhaps?

Sorry, but, no, this location is not "the heart" of West Roxbury.

West Roxbury has a heart?

- The Original SoBo Yuppie

That soulless collection of investor-owned condos you prefer to call home, I'd think.

There, now you've done it, you've gone and made me defend West Roxbury!

You don't need to make it sound like you did something bad.

West Roxbury has a heart?

Yes, it's where all the businesses are banks.

Just do a U-turn past where the other McDonald's used to be

Remember the portrait of Ronald in that place? It used to scare my kids.

The statue of Ronald in the McDonald's across the road - which they at least got rid of with the latest remodel. And, of course, absolutely nothing compared to the Chuck E. Cheese that used to be next door.

to Jackie's Packie?

HA! I would've never thought of this one.

Yeah, it is next to a packie, if not Jackie's.

A name like "Town Line Liquors," just to discover that in fact that is the name.

Some numbskull will get it in their head that there is a chain of liquor stores with that name, since there seems to be at least one in almost every municipality in the state (save Nantucket and Gosnold, of course.)

I was holding out hope for a Bunghole Liquors.

Dedham Line Liquor on Washington Street.

Aren't businesses like this is exactly why the internet was invented?

But, why Wild Orchid?! I kind of feel like they missed out on an opportunity for a much better business name. Let's explore a few below.

Sex & Smoke
Butts & Butts
Poke & Toke
Slappy & Tobaccy
Gape & Vape
Pokey & Smokey
Puff & Muff

Please feel free to add to this list.

should be called the Fainting Puritan or maybe the Mo' Lasses Flood (too soon?)

Bras & Emphysemas

Butts & Butts got me good. Well done.

gotta change it to "Butts and Buttz". The "z" adds an extra layer of tacky

Gash & Lash
Bong & Dong

But of course they're trying to make it sound classy rather than... assy.

I think of it as "Dildos & Bongs" whenever I drive past it.

What about the sign above...
Is that a real company??

  • There is no listing for a Paraclete Function Hall in the Boston area
  • What is a mamawah service? Is it a dress? Is that a misspelling?
  • There are no google hits on that telephone number and the website has a different telephone number

The website has quotes using Lorem Ipsum. From people with titles such as "Triple 8 Interactive" "Time Stuff" and "Vice Canyon"

Reverse search the business name?
You get this...

ROYAL BETSA was created by Freda Agboga - Feika with firm commitment to serve her clients with the fear of God. Freda took her passion for event planning and designing to a higher level when she relocated to Boston, USA. Royal Betsa with God's direction was birthed to take stress from her clients who want to have a magnificent event but do not want to deal with the stress of event planning, designing and management. Freda’s events are known for their extraordinary creativity and magnificent décor. Freda’s fear for God and admirable personality gives her clients the assurance that their events will be extraordinary and breathtaking.

The founder appears to be from Africa. She likely tailors her busines for folks of similar cultural values.

Somehow I don't think a business that identifies with 'fear of God' is going to be happy with her new neighbor.

My chuckles are only constrained by the fact that someone has spent their good money to produce this sign and website.

its owned by the same people who run Amazings in Dedham . i remember an emplo... uh i mean on the internet ... it told me. Darn work computers and their viruses ...

West Roxbury sounds like it's finally becoming exciting. I am considering a visit. Any other recommendation?

Wow. There's all kindsastuff going on in that signage! Dance time, sex toys, smoking vessels, party planning, ...just WOW!!!

I cropped my original photo to focus on the particular store's sign, of course.

Big sign in West Roxbury

Down at the cohen plaza

What else could there possibly be?

Booze, ciggies, power yoga, party rental, and sex toys. Your one-stop-shop for one hell of a Saturday night.

It's just up the road from Boston's only Taco Bell/Long John Silver combination store.

good weekend in Vegas with all that stuff."

Also laser tag and Joann's Fabrics. My 'hood has it all, Adam.

This post and its resulting commentary have made my day. I can just go home now. Or maybe call up the Vice Canyon and see if they can hook me up with a good event.
