Man now faces hate-crime charges for brick attack at North Station in August

A man who likes to carry a brick is scheduled for arraignment today on charges he beat a man at North Station - and tried to push him on the commuter-rail tracks - after finding out the victim was from Mexico, the Suffolk County District Attorney's office reports.

Stephen Fusco, 49, of Malden, was initially charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon but had civil-rights violations added after investigators determined why he used a brick on another man on Aug. 4:

Fusco allegedly asked the victim, a stranger, if he spoke English and where he was from; when the man said he was from Mexico, Fusco allegedly hit him in the face with a brick and tried to push him onto the commuter rail tracks. Multiple bystanders, including Keolis employees, intervened and held him until MBTA Transit Police officers arrived.

Fusco has been held in lieu of $10,000 bail since his August arraignment in Boston Municipal Court; today's hearing follows his indictment by a Suffolk County grand jury.

In 2014, Transit Police arrested him on charges he used a brick to smash in a window of an Orange Line train at Community College. Police said they found him at the station, bare chested, covered in cuts and holding a brick.
