Feel like some Syrian food tonight?
By adamg on Sat, 01/28/2017 - 5:47pm
In Marc Hurwitz's Friends of Boston Hidden Restaurants Facebook group, Bobby O'Neill asked this afternoon:
I feel like restaurants and shops owned by members of the Iraqi, Iranian, Sudanese, Yemeni, Libyan, Somali, and Syrian communities could use our support. Any recommendations?
Here's the list folks have come up with so far (additions welcome, of course):
Iranian
- Moby Dick of Boston, 269 Huntington Ave., Fenway.
- Lala Rokh, 97 Mt. Vernon St., Beacon Hill.
- Sabzi, 352 Massachusetts Ave., Arlington.
- Kolbeh of Kabob, 1500 Cambridge St., Cambridge.
- Jasmine Taste of Persia, 580 Mt. Auburn St., Watertown.
- Roksana's Persian Food, 133 Mt. Auburn St., Watertown (takeout only).
- Molana Restaurant, 5 Spring St., Watertown.
- Shiraz Persian Cuisine, 72 Bigelow Ave., Watertown.
- Tabrizi Bakery, 56 Mt. Auburn St., Watertown.
Iraqi
- Falafel King, 62 Summer St., 260 Washington St. and 48 Winter St., downtown Boston.
- Sheherazad Truck, varying locations around Boston.
- Falafel King, 1504 Hancock St., Quincy.
- Boston Baklava, 419 Hancock St., Quincy.
Somali
- Ashur Restaurant, 291 Roxbury St., Roxbury.
- Dayib Cafe, 722 Shawmut Ave., Roxbury.
- Butterfly Falafel, 1420 Tremont St., Mission Hill.
Syrian
- Tarboosh Boston, 2 Brighton Ave., Allston.
- The Loading Dock, 11 Brighton St., Belmont.
- Falafel Palace, 25 Central Sq., Cambridge.
- Kareem's Restaurant, 99 Common St., Watertown.
- Syrian Grocery Importing, 270 Shawmut Ave., South End
- Sound Bites, 704 Broadway, Somerville (owner is from Syria).

Soundbites
I believe Soundbites in Ball Sq is owned by a Syrian immigrant (http://www.bostonmagazine.com/restaurants/article/2016/05/01/somerville-...) I ate there this morning!
You're right!
Thanks, added.
Thanks for posting, Adam.
Thanks for posting, Adam. What a great idea--and easy thing we can all do to make a small difference!
protest the muslim ban sunday in copley
I love the idea of supporting these restaurants as a way to show support to the greater communities from the banned countries. Thanks Adam!
There is also a protest in Copley tomorrow (sunday) 1-3 against the Muslim ban:

Lebanese?
You're selling yourselves short by excluding Lebanon. They didn't make it onto Trump's list but the country has had its share of problems. Your list would then include Shawarma King on Beacon Street at Coolidge Corner. Also, thanks for reminding me about Moby Dicks, I ate there over twenty years ago and hope to go again soon.
It'd be one way to get West Roxbury on the list
Since it has two restaurants (al-Wadi on VFW Parkway and Fairouz on Washington) as well as at least one market (Bay Sweets on Spring, which, come to think of it, probably serves at least some people in West Roxbury's Syrian community - which is large enough to have two churches).
But, yeah, the main purpose was to show support, even if in a small way, for the communities directly affected by the ban.
Garlic and Lemon in Allston
Garlic and Lemon in Allston and I believe Aceituna in Kendal are run by Levantine Armenian (ie Ethnic Armenians from Syria/Lebanon)
Falafel King, Quincy
The family behind Falafel King in downtown Quincy is Iraqi. 1504 Hancock St.
Thanks
Added.
Same as Falafel King in Downtown Crossing?
There have been two (or three?) Falafel King restaurants in Downtown Crossing with great, quick food. I'm making plans for Monday's lunch.
Brothers, I'm told.

Get the White Pizza. It is great.
Somali restaurant add
Dayib Cafe, corner of Shawmut and Williams Streets just on the edge of Dudley Square. $10 gets you a huge helping of food -- rice and veggies with chicken, tilapia, beef or (sometimes) goat, along with a banana and a bottle of water. Good food.
Excellent Idea + maybe one addition in W Town
This is an idea ANY reasonable person can support. These business owners are in this country legally. I go to Falafel King whenever in the Washington Street area. It is excellent. And when in Watertown Sq area I do hit the Tabrizi bakery; good stuff there too.
Speaking of Watertown: I thought that at least one of the cluster of eastern markets on Mt Auburn is Syrian, but I'm afraid I'm not sure which one if any. Anyone know?
shiraz persian cuisine watertown
Maybe you can add this place! A local favorite Iranian spot.
Shiraz Persian Cuisine
72 Bigelow Avenue Watertown, MA 02472

Shiraz in Watertown
Shiraz Persian Cuisine in Watertown is a favorite.
The Campus Trolly
The little food truck without wheels on BU's campus was run by a sweet Syrian couple. Sadly, they closed about two months ago due to Boston cracking down on food stands that aren't real vehicles. But they would have been a good addition to the list.
Fiouna Catering in Nonantum (Newton)
Fiouna We used to get trays of food at one of the places I contracted. Really good Persian food.
Lebanon

Cafe Beirut in JP. When I stopped in after the election he said his business was down a lot. He is Lebanese. I hope and think it was because we were all too depressed to go out.
Cafe Baraka
Cafe Baraka has North African food and a hell of a harisa!

Sultan's Kitchen - Financial District
The chef/owner of Turkish restaurant Sultan's Kitchen (116 State Street), Ozcan Ozan, is from Turkey - not on the list of 7, but a predominantly Muslim country. He also has written a cookbook, also called "Sultan's Kitchen," which can be ordered through Amazon. I think the restaurant may only be open for lunch, but the food is terrific.
For those in the suburbs/those making a trip to IKEA...
Chaloos in Easton is a place that really needs more customers in a part of the state that generally only has both types of food: pizza and Chinese.
