Mayor Walsh just announced that BPS schools will be closed tomorrow. "I'd rather be safe with our kids than not," he said.

Well, it is supposed to be in only the teens and 20s tomorrow, so the shoveled snow on the sidewalks is gonna turn to ice. I think everyone's had their fill of being suddenly airborne after yesterday.
Can someone cancel my work, too? Or at least convince my boss to let me continue working from home? :p

Also hoping my boss lets me "work" from home. Of course it's a dirty secret that few people actually do work on snow days.

The video I tried to embed contained a "do not embed" flag so it wouldn't show the video when embedded outside of youtube. The actual youtube player window appeared fine but with the normal youtube static error message.
My fault was not previewing before submitting.

Why is the mayor announcing school closures. Isn't that the superintendent's job?

The mayor was having a press conference anyway.
But does it matter?

Save time? If the decision to close schools tomorrow was made by BPS, and Walsh ordered that the decision be withheld from the media and the public until he could do his press conference and announce it himself in front of the camera, then how does that save time?
Time sensitive information shouldn't wait for a presser. As a parent I want to know about it ASAP.
OK, Mr. Anger ...

The mayor's press conference was at 1 p.m., just as the main part of the storm was hitting. You really think the school superintendent had been sitting on this information for hours?

No, I think the mayor might have been sitting on the information for hours.
Why?

And when would you have made the announcement?

Mumbles never held a press conference over the snow. He held a war room meeting, they made decisions about parking emergencies, and the news went out without delay.
Saying that Walsh was having a press conference 'anyway' is improper use of the word 'anyway'. The raison d'etre of the press conference is to get Walsh's mug on TV which people are paying attention to only because the Walsh hasn't released the snow information yet. It takes hours to plan and schedule these press conferences, which is hours less time you and everyone have to prepare for the kids not having school the next day or for moving your car to the garage.
Well obviously the superintendent...

Instead of the first five snow days are free days off, the first five have to be made up. Our kids don't spend enough time in class as it is. Ifvyou need more than 5 days, then only those days count as days off. My guess is they wouldn't be as cavalier with snow days. I get today. Tomorrow is ridiculous , but a 4 day weekend would be nice.

That's nonsense. Students have to attend school for at least 180 days, staff some more depending on position.
There are no "free" days, for every day of school missed one is added on in June. 2015 was so bad we had two holidays taken away to make up the time.
Then what was all the conversation a couple years ago

My understanding is yes, it is 180 days per year. However, the first 5 snow days count as one of those 180 days. The problem in 2015 was that it was a rare year with more than 5 snow days, so, yes you had to make those up w a couple of holidays because there's also a restriction that school has to end on the last weekdsy of june.

Snow days are built into the school calendar. Whenever there's a winter with too little snow, they cancel the last couple of days of the school year.
