South Boston turns out in force for the annual re-opening of Sullivan's

A beautiful day and school-vacation week equaled a wicked long line for the opening of Sullivan's at Castle Island today. Traffic was backed up way past the Farragut statue.

people will line up for almost anything. Glad they had nice weather.
When can I line up to get ice-cream or coffee at the boat house at the Jamaica Pond though?
Southie is known for not
Southie is known for not having good restaurants and bars(though this has improved lately). People waiting an hour in line to buy a hot dog doesn't help this reputation.

I'm usually not one for defending Alabama-Sur-Mer but lighten up. It's hot dog and fries by the seaside and an old fort, with planes going over real close. It's fun. That's all it is.
PS - As someone who used to live there when the opening of the Boston Beer Garden was thought as a harbinger of the end of their world, no one cares about what people not from there think about their choice of caloric intake.

"Planes going over real close" is considered a treat now? Come to my place in East Boston and you'll experience planes going over real close night an day. You'll be in your glory. I'll even throw in hot dogs and fries. Might as well make a party of it. :-)

Looks like there are two kinds of people in this discussion
People who either enjoyed some part of a nice day outside, maybe even with a hot dog and some clam chowder at a place like Sullivan's (in the interest of full disclosure, I raise my hand here) and people who are either just bitter because they were stuck in an airless cube farm all day or are just plain bitter and refuse to accept that anybody could possibly enjoy some time at Castle Island.

We were at Plum I. today and it was great seeing everybody out. I would have had no problem waiting in line at Sullivan's for a dog today.
As has already been suggested, try to lighten up.

Good bet this is a lot of out-of-towners. Last time the Globe did a piece on this it was all people coming in from Framingham and such that they interviewed. Would explain all the cars. Why such an urge for cheap junk food anyway? Sullivan's is fine but nothing special.

In any case, it was a beautiful day, why not spend it watching the boats and planes with a hot dog or clam chowder?

Why are comments here always crapping on people from "out of town" or "suburbanites"? How many commenters are from Boston, or even the state?

I live in Boston, but didn't grow up in Boston, though I was raised within a 30 mile radius.
Typically on this site, I more often see people bitching about working class folks who grew up in Boston. And of course, no one seems to give a damn when anything bad happens in Roxbury, but god forbid joggers invade the bike lane... all hell breaks loose, so maybe this site is mostly visited by suburbanites. FWIW, I love Sullivan's and Castle Island. That greasy $3 grilled cheese can't be beat! My husband prefers the lobster roll. It was a beautiful spring-like day, people definitely need to lighten up!
Sullivan's IS Special
Sullivan's IS special. Get some hot dogs and fries, sit outside to eat, with fresh air and people all around, the fort to walk around, fly a kite on the water side if you brought one, a playground for the kids and water to splash in, everyone out having a good time on a beautiful day. Just standing in line outside today was great. Sullivan's. You can't beat it, if you can get near it. Went around the parking lot 7 or 8 times last time and finally left. Not nearly enough handicapped parking spots.. I can't park by Farragut and walk over. The kids love Sullivan's and consider going there a treat.
Sully's Opening Day
At noontime the wait time in line was 10 minutes. People watching, talking to the people next to you and enjoying the nice weather made the wait go quickly. I walked there from my home in Southie avoiding the parking situation. Enjoyed a hot dog, cheese burger and fries. A very nice day in my book!
