Pedialyte samples in front of South Station

Are we facing a shortage of toddlers with dehydration these days? For some reason, Pedialyte had some shills in Dewey Square yesterday trying to foist samples on passing adults. Maybe it goes great chilled with some vodka.

UPDATE: Ye hair-of-the-dog editor has been informed by reliable sources that Pedialyte is pushing itself as a hangover cure. Blecch.

You could take NAC before and while drinking and prevent hangovers, rather than treating the symptoms.

Barring that, there are plenty of ORS (oral rehydration solutions) on the market that are every bit as good as Pedialyte, and much cheaper. That's probably why they're trying to make inroads into this market. Actually not that bad of a marketing campaign.

N-Acetyl Cysteine. It's what they give to people who are in the midst of liver failure because of an (ill-conceived) Tylenol overdose. I've been taking it nearly three years, and my worst "hangover" has been better than my best when I didn't take it. I generally pop two a half hour before drinking, and have one or two every few drinks. In layman's terms, it's basically replenishing the chemical which breaks down alcohol into things your body is okay with, whereas when that chemical runs out (after 4-5 drinks), it will turn alcohol into stuff that will make you feel like a reanimated zombie the next day (acetaldehyde).

I'd heard of the Vitamin B and electrolyte remedies but not this one.

Will try it out next time I'm out on the town.

Thanks!

Note that if you decide that you're going to drink double what you normally which makes you end up with a hangover, you're still probably going to get a hangover (but it won't be as bad). I have a former coworker that is convinced it doesn't work because he took a dose that will be a safeguard against a hangover from, say, 6-7 drinks, and he went out and had double. Well of course it "didn't work".

They sell it at GNC, but this brand on Amazon is a lot cheaper per mg. Two before, one every couple of drinks (I usually do two since I'm fine with taking "too much"), and one before bed. Hydration is completely separate: if you don't hydrate you're still going to end up with that part of a hangover, this just addresses the buildup of alcohol byproducts.

...can't be wrong! I roomed with a couple of med students in the late 80's and partied with them and their colleagues often. They all without exception, sang the praises of Pedialyte for remedying morning-after woes. They maintained that it's easier on the stomach than Gatorade, which has a similar profile, and quickly replenishes what a night of festive drinking often depletes. Med student encomiums aside, I found it helpful.

Its cheaper and tastes better. They even have low sugar varieties.

they should be on the South Shore not in Boston. because that is where most parade watchers come in from.

And now when I look at the photo, I can't not see that cooler thing as a giant liquid-filled leprechaun.

If you're dehydrated, due to a cold, flue, or yes, alcohol, Pedialyte is a must.

have known about this trick for years.
It works.
Only thing better is a nurse significant other who can give you a saline IV. That is pretty much instant.

Take a few wiffs of O2

This is also great for opiate withdrawal. Really a life saver and much better than Gatorade. Being that MA is in an opiate crisis this seems fitting.

a new marketing direction for Pedialyte. Sure, there's your core market of sick toddlers, but if we want to keep the brand growing, we need to reach out to new demographics: alcoholics and heroin addicts. I'm sure those demographics can be marketed to with the same kind of material that we use for pediatricians and parents, right? Or maybe we keep the old advertising, and just put the new billboards on Mass Ave down by Melnea Cass?

The latest research is showing that while people experiencing hangover symptoms are indeed dehydrated and should replenish liquids, the vast majority of their symptoms are neurological. Hard to believe. but the data is showing that the affect of any hangover cure that doesn't address the neotolgoical havoc the liquor is causing is mostly placebo.

20 mile bike ride.

I suspect it just forces my metabolism to burn off whatever lingering crud is making my head ache. Finish the superfund cleanup, as it were.

I emit sweat like crazy which is great in Vegas because I never get overheated as long as I keep drinking but in Boston it makes me a walking puddle in the summer. That means I get dehydrated rather easily if I don't keep an eye out and I can tell you after a long day/evening even without drinking , if I did not keep up I feel like I am fully hungover.

When I am both hungover and dehydrated hung over I have seen what even a glass of water will do. I also like to drink copious amounts of tea. It gives you the caffeine that you are craving to wake up with but without the luggage coffee brings. It may act as a diuretic to some, especially if you drink lots of it and do not normally do that but let's be honest your body is full of all sorts of things that you should be expelling at that moment ANYWAY. It also moves rather quickly down south and gives you much needed moisture to , um, get the plumbing moving. I have also enjoyed hard boiled eggs with a banana and soda water with some lime and salt mixed in.

I never thought of using Pedialyte, seems legit. I used to drink Gatorade but the sugar bomb in my stomach first thing in the morning mixed with the dehydration feeling is dreadful. I find it is more useful to chug one the night before while drinking.
