Police seize dirt bikes at BHA projects across Boston

Boston Police report seizing 16 off-road vehicles at BHA projects in raids this morning.

The raids, conducted with BHA Police, state Environmental Police, ISD inspectors and the National Insurance Crime Bureau, took place at the West Broadway and Mary Ellen McCormick developments in South Boston, Franklin Field in Dorchester, Gallivan in Mattapan and Fairmount in Hyde Park.

Police say all the vehicles were being stored improperly or illegally:

The officers, as well as Code Enforcement officers, spoke with the residents to educate them on the hazardous conditions presented by the improper storage of these vehicles.

How will these young people turning their lives around get to work now? They are at risk of falling into a life of crime now to support their families. Motorbikes have to be stored inside to prevent theft. Shame on the city for transit bigotry and a war on the working poor.

I hope you are joking. Have you seen the manner in which these vehicles are used? Gangs riding on sidewalks and in wheelies weaving through traffic and not obeying one traffic law. Intimidating people. I beg you to take a stroll on Columbia road on a summer day and tell me again how you feel.

I sensed sarcasm so I didn't post, but was going to say precisely what you said about venturing up and down Columbia Road/Franklin Park on a nice day to see firsthand what's going on.

Sorry was thing tongue and cheek?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Right. That's a good one!

You know, it doesn't cost much to get a SCOOTER and a tag for it versus a dirt bike. Do you think that everyone here is that stupid? Do you?

If they "need to commute", they should have picked the CHEAPER and LEGAL option.

Silly boy.

Where will you be with all your "war on the poor" blather?

hi, concern troll. no one is riding to work on an atv. But your comment will support the prejudice that everyone in the BHA is a hair breadth away from being a thug.

Teen age boys love dirt bikes and atvs. Just like they love fire, explosions and cigarettes. This stuff is unsafe and the city has the responsibility to regulate it.

That is what the RMV is for... Register the vehicle, store it properly, obey the traffic laws, and commute to work without issue. I've had 3 near misses from kids tearing around the corner ON THE SIDEWALK!!! This is not the way to commute to work.

dirt bikes and atv's are not required to be registered with rmv

Yeah! How are these law breakers going to run down pedestrians on sidewalks now? Unfair! Who will ruin parks by doing donuts in fields with these vehicles confiscated? Who doesn't love the ridiculously loud noises they make and the huge amount of toxic emissions they spew?!? And taking public transit, riding a bike and walking may be cheaper and legal ways of getting to work, but but but transit bigotry!

Whether all the "likes" read it as sarcasm or not.

I for one would be happy to see all of these bikes in a smoldering tower of flames. Or AT LEAST being ridden not on sidewalks, at insane speeds, against traffic, brushing by pedestrians and cyclists, doing wheelies on 93...ok, never mind--smoldering flame tower it is. I don't care if you're from Franklin Field or a Saudi business major at BU--getting your kicks by puttimg people's lives at risk on public streets is not OK.

About freaking time!

Surprised that they were being "stored" in South Boston. I have never seen these.

I actually walk through those projects on my way to work and the people there are really nice.

Don't know much about the "projects" outside the general location, that's why they have never actually seen these "vehicles." Let me assure you, they are in courtyards, squares, "quads" (for lack of a better term) and even on the roof tops of the high rises at Bromley.

As far as people taking them to work, I never see one vehicle getting started up before noon....that might be an understatement actually.

So of course, please label me as a racist, insensitive---whatever but these are my observations based upon 6 years of working almost non stop at every site in the "portfolio," both elderly and family.

Kudos for wrangling up these off-road vehicles and all the foolishness that goes with them.

Those bikes are probably sitting on the landings, roof, and the cellars (some are still accessible). Trust there are many places to hide a dirtbike in the MEM projects.

I'd love to know how it fit in any of those elevators and what roof did you see a dirt bike on in Bromley...I call your bluff on that one and I also work"site to site"

They have been driving them up and down Old Colony Ave doing wheelies covering their faces with bandanas. Not as bad as Columbia Road but that isn't saying much. Yes most of the people there are nice. Its a few bad neighbors and all of their visitors that cause a problem and ruin it for everyone.

Really? Because I frequently visit someone in West Broadway and they are everywhere. Buzzing up and down streets and through courtyards. Doing drug deals and buzzing off to the next one. I am really surprised BHA did anything about this.

Highly doubt it was BHA doing this. They just had to play along like they care once the BPD is involved. The tenant could drive their dirtbike right to a "private conference" and park it inside the management building and they would be clueless.

Yes. You are so right! BHA is a complete joke.

These things, and the people who ride them, are a menace. They have no regard for other drivers and they're super unsafe, as well as LOUD.

FIND AND CONFISCATE THEM ALL!

Saw about six kids (like 12 or so) taking turns on a dirt bike on the 2nd street sidewalk near M street park.

We have skateboard parks..... Is it feasible to have a dirt bike park?
We need to literally keep these kids off the streets. I have seen these kids ripping down the streets and causing a bit of mayhem, the thing is, they are actually quite talented and practically acrobats on these bikes.
A designated space to ride these bikes and show off talent would be a healthy outlet for them.
Also it seems like the storage is the issue so perhaps a safe storage facility could be available as well?
Ya, I know who is going to pay for it? What about insurance?
The price tag for a dirt bike park may seem cheap when one of these kids gets killed or causes an accident on the roads!

that'd be the ultimate NIMBY because literally who the hell wants a dirt bike park next to their house? It took years to the skateboard park done--this would be 1000 x more difficult.

Agreed probably 1,000,000 times more difficult. It would have to be in an industrial area.

you cannot compare an dirt bike on dirt bike accident to possible accidents with skate boards. The safety issues are very different. The only place they have like this is F1 and thats not low cost.

You also cannot compare the noise and the pollution. Do they call them dirt bikes because they rip and destroy the grass until it is dirt?

nope and nope and nope
