Plunkett Prime went for a walk around the Chestnut Hill Reservoir today, reports:
The algae in the Chestnut Hill Reservoir is so bad that ducks leave a wake behind them and dead fish are floating everywhere.
The MWRA only uses the reservoir in emergencies.

Algal blooms like this are a sign of excessive nutrient concentrations in the water.
The algae itself can also be toxic, being cyanobacteria and all ... and they can also use up the dissolved oxygen in the water through rapid growth and that can kill fish.

Lawns don't belong in New England.
Nice places for tick breeding, too. I ripped mine out years ago and some of my neighbors were shocked, but they now enjoy the perennial show from April to October.
While others haven't totally ripped theirs out, some have been taken over by ever-expanding flower beds and dwarf trees.
We keep waiting...

Not so obvious from the headline picture, but if you click on the tweet you get several other pictures that clarify the situation ... in a manner of speaking.
UPDATE: I paddled the Mystic River from dam to dam and back yesterday ... pollen floats and comes with a lot of little clumps of florets.
I don't expect the flora to be that much different 15 miles away, so I'll stick with "algae" for the reservoir.
