Iranian cancer researcher with visa detained at Logan

Stat reports the feds aren't going to let an Iranian into the country just because he's a scientist with a visa issued by the government in May to do research at Children's Hospital. His wife and three children, were, of course, also locked up and are expected to be booted out of the country soon.

A common statement from my fellow millennials these days. Of course, they offer nothing to improve this planet, just complaints about how they don't want to live here. Byyye.

The Clinton family and the DNC staffers are equally to blame for this.

Don't let the Dems ride the backlash against a problem they helped create, like they're just taking turns with the RNC on honorary titles, while they both serve the same big money.

If the DNC doesn't provide good candidates, and they backstab the genuine ones, then punish the whole party.

If there's any justice, in 2020, only independent candidates will be able to get voter turnout.

up
Voting closed 0

Clinton and the DNC aren't violating people's rights by not respecting their valid visas to be in this country that they have thoroughly been vetted for. Eventually, Trump and his supporters are going to have to take responsibility for the mess they've made.

Do Iranians have in the US?

Can you tell us which rights are limited to citizens and which are not?

I hope you travel to another country and get turned back. Only you aren't as helpful to society as a cancer researcher and Trump voters never leave their crappy towns.

Under the 5th and 14th Amendments, they have almost the same rights as you do, except for voting. Those protections are routinely ignored, of course.

Clinton and the DNC pretty much guaranteed a Trump presidency and a Republican senate majority. I hold them fully accountable.

up
Voting closed 0

I hold people with big egos and small brains accountable. Politics hasn't changed, just people's (lack) of understanding it.

Imagine if the left sat out when the civil rights fight was in full swing because their politicians were dragging their feet?

Nope, they understood politics. They lobbied, and voted, and dragged those with them, even those that disagreed. They voted strategically, because that's all our two party system allows.

Now the left likes to pine for their true Scottsmen, and 26 million people will lose health insurance because "they're both the same".

Which by the way is GOP Propaganda. Nice of the left to repeat it and buy in. Someone's got to do the hard work. Add in some voting doesn't matter as desert! Because while that cancer spreads the GOP is spending billions to get every vote of theirs counted.

and 26 million people will lose health insurance because "they're both the same".

26 million will lose health insurance because that's the promise that some candidates made, and because the people voted for those candidates. Overwhelmingly so, in the areas likely to be affected by the Republican health bill.

Democracy can be messy. I don't personally like the outcome, but throwing people off the health insurance rolls was clearly and unambiguously chosen by the voters last November.

More people voted for Clinton than for Trump.

up
Voting closed 0

What do Clinton or Trump have to do with this? We're talking about legislative efforts to repeal Obamacare. Neither Clinton nor Trump were running for the Senate or the House.

At the legislative level, the Republicans campaigned on "we're going to kick people off the healthcare rolls" as a central, defining plank of their platform, and they won quite handily.

Now the left likes to pine for their true Scottsmen, and 26 million people will lose health insurance because "they're both the same".

Nah yourself. "The left" is not one thing, and if you think that what "the left" is doing now is "pin[ing] for their true Scottsmen[sic]", you're not paying attention.

Also nah about voting strategically. I know that people like you like to get all blamey about how the purists elected Trump, but you have no evidence and no data to back this claim.

I'm sorry, i fell asleep halfway through your first sentence.

Also, not a dem supporter myself, agree that the two party system is poop, but lets stay on task and call a xenophobic spade a spade eh?

because the Democrats did not provide an appealing candidate, they are partly to blame for the Supreme Court allowing Trump's foolish, mean spirited and short sighted executive order to continue?

Each can be judged (or not) on its merits without the other.

So based on this logic, Hillary and the DNC are equally to blame for every action taken by the executive and the republican senate?

I agree that the DNC mishandled the election and that Hillary was not a strong candidate.

However, blaming them for the travel ban instituted by the current administration does not address the issue at hand: there is a person who came to our country, evidently here to do good, being jammed up, possibly (likely) based on his national origin.

Pointing to groups/powers other than those directly responsible for the action is a distraction. Trump is the president now, the GOP controls the senate, hold them accountable for their actions.

-or-

Every time that something you dislike happens as a result of the current administration spit on a photo of Debbie Wasserman Schultz and call it a day.

...and humanity and straight up common sense to vote against the only candidate
who said five black men should still be imprisoned/executed despite being indisputably not guilty of the crime they were accused of committing,
who made fun of a disabled reporter,
who insinuated a Mexican judge cannot do his job because he's Mexican,
who insinuated Blacks cannot be accountants because they're Black (but Jews can because they're Jews!),
who generically accused Mexican immigrants of being criminals,
who sexualized his daughter & bragged about watching a sex tape of his daughter's childhood friend-- when he was 60,
who encouraged his followers to physically assault opponents,
who refused to rent apartments he owned to Blacks and who still constantly equates all majority Black neighborhoods with "dangerous areas,"
who bragged about forcing himself on women,
then there is NO ONE, including Bernie & Hillary, that the Dems could have run to defeat him. What, exactly, would Trump have had to do? Sacrifice a baby on TV? And what, exactly, do you want? Hand jobs in the voting booth?

I voted for Bernie in the primary, but stopped donating to his campaign later when he wouldn't promise he would spend his war chest on down-ballot Dems. Still, I would have voted for Bernie, Hillary, Evan Mullen, Bill Weld, Martin O'Malley, or Donald Duck to keep Trump out of the White House. Anyone who wouldn't has crappy judgment, at best.
And anyone who blames the Dems for Trump is a fool. He won because he was supported by racists and sexists, because of Comey's nonsense about reopening the email investigation less than 2 weeks before election day, and quite possibly Russian influence. Those more than covered the margins of loss.

ICYMI, this action explicitly goes against the recent Supreme Court ruling. Your "hugh[sic] thank you" needs another target.

up

The bigger sin, is that the Supreme Court allowed what the lower courts banned. So, now the scientist and his family have to go through the stress of proving themselves worthy because someone did not understand that they are allowed in, which would not of happened for the wisdom and the actions of the Supreme Court reinstating parts of Trump's travel ban.

So I did not miss anything, lbb. I am just coming at it from a difficult angle.
And more importantly, no one knows where he or his family is according to his friend at Children's Hospital. So this guy and his family come over on the premise that all is ok since he had a visa and they are detained and no one has heard from them? So what does that tell you? Sounds like it does not really matter, they are still going to deport anyone who comes from one of the said countries, visas be damned.

It appears the researcher was not prevented from entering because of the Trump travel ban. He had a visa that was approved prior to the Supreme Court ruling that allowed the Trump policy to take (partial) effect last month. So ICE must have had some other rationale. It could still have something to do with Trump or his administration's policies/priorities, and I'm NOT arguing that the detention is necessarily justified, just saying there's something else going on here.

He had a visa that was approved prior to the Supreme Court ruling that allowed the Trump policy to take (partial) effect last month.

Pre- or post-ban, he had all the qualifications necessary to be admitted. There may be something else going on here (in my youth we'd call it "xenophobic bigotry", you may use a different term), but it has nothing to do with the timing of the visa vs. the Supreme Court decision.

The good doctor obviously didn't have his, pardon the vulgar expression, shit in order, which he should have, considering I'm sure he had professional assistance in the matter, not to mention backing from Children's Hospital. Somebody goofed up.

My grandman, as a teenager, could not immigrate to the U.S., because it coincided with U.S. entry into the war, and preference for passage to the U.S. was reserved for U.S. citizens. She had to wait 5 years. Shit happens.

This nonsense is going both ways with the Iranians understandably reacting similarly. A friend who is a music critic was invited by the Ravenna Festival to attend a performance led by Riccardo Muti of a combined group of young Iranian & Italian musicians in Teheran last weekend. He went to Ravenna with assurance from the festival that his visa would be there before the groups' scheduled departure. In the end, the Iranian Embassy in Rome refused to issue one. He was the only American in the gaggle of critics travelling to Teheran & the only critic denied a visa. When the festival protested to the embassy, they were told that all decisions about visas for Americans were being made at the highest level and that the decision was final. A critic certainly isn't equal to a man who can help in the fight against cancer, but the fact that the Iranians blocked him suggests that their response is all-encompassing and dialogue at all levels of exchange is being silenced.

Why does the headline say "whereabouts unknown" ? Was that due to some confusion or ambiguity or is something more sinister being insinuated ? The STAT piece only says he was detained, it did'nt mention anything about him disappearing.

up

When I first read the Stat piece, it said something about the researcher's whereabouts not being known. Looks like they're known now - and that he will join his family in getting kicked out of the country.

up

More bad reporting. I laughed at the whereabouts unknown tidbit as it was clearly put their to make the story sound more dramatic. Like the US govt took away the Iranian. Lol!

up

Thank you. It's a relief to know we have not yet fallen to the point of having "disappeareds". I don't think the headline was intentionally misleading. WGBH radio reported this morning that the family was held incommunicato at least for some time.

They were supposed to be met, and they didn't show up. Whereabouts unknown.

Someone has some information that they've been detained, presumably, but no information about where. Whereabouts unknown.

Until they were on a plane back to Iran, it sounds like it was entirely whereabouts unknown.

If his J-1 visa effective date was beginning of May, he has between 15 and 30 days (depending on the employer) to enter the US without needing to update his form DS-2019 (which is what he brings to the embassy to get his visa document).

When was he detained? If it happened in the last week or so, he's more than 60 days past his J-1 visa effective date and his employer could have deleted his SEVIS entry.

Stat reports the feds aren't going to let an Iranian into the country JUST because he's a scientist with a visa issued by the government in May
-- my emphasis.

-------------------------------------

The 99.9% likelihood is that he has a 'bad' visa -- one the does not meet the standards of the United States.

Other topics -- like, I wish (or perhaps a stronger verb) Pres. Trump was not elected -- are not relevant.

Dr. Mohsen Dehnavi simply didn't have the proper documentation to enter the U.S. -- a sovereign country.

How do you suppose Iran would have handled a similar situation?

As for President Trump's wise travel moratorium from dysfunctional countries that sponsor Islamic terror, what difference does it make that this guy is allegedly a doctor? Should he get special preference over an Iranian auto mechanic? I applaud ex-President Obama for identifying the countries where no person can be properly vetted for immigration to the U.S. We haven't had an embassy in Tehran since it was overrun in 1979 by radical Muslims. We can't vet them but we should just take the word of Children's Hospital that this particular guy and his wife are OK? Please.

Lest we forget, Ft. Hood, TX mass murderer Nidal Hasan M.D. was a doctor too. There should be no exceptions for any occupation.

As for the children being "locked up," seriously? Has Trump now installed small cages for kids arriving illegally at Logan? I'm sure the policies for children arriving illegally, in effect long before Trump, were observed and the children treated well. It's too bad the father put them in that position in the first place.

what difference does it make that this guy is allegedly a doctor? Should he get special preference over an Iranian auto mechanic?

Yes, of course he should. Fairly central to the visa policies of most countries, is that visas are preferentially awarded to people who possess skills or expertise that are hard to find. If shortage of auto mechanics were a problem, then auto mechanics, too, should get preference over, say, short-order cooks.

It's too bad the father put them in that position in the first place.

Based on the story, it would appear that he was invited to come here as a visiting researcher, that he believed that all of his visa paperwork was in good order, and he went to the airport and got on a plane.

What information do do you have that would support your claim that he did something wrong to put his children in this position?

I'm glad for your mental comfort -- but this is just one of many, many things about which you are "sure" without having any actual information. You don't know what "the policies for children arriving illegally" are. You don't know if they were observed in this case. You don't know how they were treated, much less "treated well". I know you worship anything in a uniform, but maybe you could make at least a pretense of objectivity and independent thought.

What position, exactly?

"I'm sorry I helped conceive you."

"I'm sorry I was called to work in a distant country and wanted to keep being your dad."

"I'm sorry there was nobody else I could leave you with during X months of work in another country."

"I'm sorry I have the skills that granted me not just a position to work in another country, but also a State-issued visa to work there, but the immigration agent at the desk didn't think they were good enough."

"I'm sorry we were all born in a country that this president doesn't like. I'll try to be born somewhere else next time."

Which "position" is the father guilty of putting his children in?
