They had great pizza. I had been to both the Needham and Allston branches. Great food & beer and very kid-friendly.
The Allston spot was sure to succeed once all the Harvard build-out is done. Guess they couldn't hang on until then.
The Harvard buildout will never be done

Harvard building out is perpetual. The center of the galaxy is driven by a massive Harvard buildout.

.. they turned Lower Allston into a wretched hive of scum and villainy, or whatever the Allston Civic Association feared would happen when they fought the restaurant's opening tooth and nail.
Seriously though, that really is a shame. They did a great job, served the LA community well, and when I lived in LA it was the only takeout within walking distance. (if walking distance is defined as an under 10 minute stroll. Yes, Allston Village and Big Daddy's were 15-20 minutes away, but sometimes it's too cold or you're too tired, and for others that distance and getting across Cambridge St is a hardship. Stone Hearth filled an important gap)

Stone Hearth got a liquor license claiming to be in an urban renewal area. But it wasn't.

I always enjoyed their pizza and they were generous with donations to the Allston community. Hopefully they have more success in Belmont.

Given that they've already closed locations in Cambridge, Hingham, Needham, and Winchester, it doesn't sound to me like the problem is lack of development in the Barry's Corner neighborhood or the previous opposition of the ACA.
True enough

The Needham location always seemed crowded, so I was surprised when that closed a while back.
Maybe, just maybe, it was the soda. They had some local artisanal version of Coke and Diet Coke that my wife simply hated. She used to bring a can of DC with her into the restaurant.
Didn't that place ...

Didn't it just open up a few years ago? In the words of Chris Rock: Grand opening ... Grand closing.

They opened in November 2011, so not quite 6 years. Not a super long run, it's true, but they lasted way longer than Pink Samurai!
