Southie no longer Southie enough to stand in for Southie in TV series, so Dorchester will have to do
UPDATE: They did do some filming in Southie last month.
Ally Jarmanning posts a notice she found on her door in Dorchester's Polish Triangle today for a meeting about a film crew that plans to do some filming for an upcoming Showtime series.
Cool, especially since it is NOT about bank-robbing punks. And cool that the producers want to "preserve some of [Dorchester's] most authentic neighborhoods on film, and feature it as a backdrop for our show."
Cool, except SMILF (hmm, wonder what that could stand for?) is supposed to be:
A raw and honest comedic look at a single, 20-something from Southie (Shaw) whose desires for relationships, sex, and a career collide with the realities of young, single motherhood.
But good news, Southie: Rosie O'Donnell plays her Southie mom.

Doubling down on the Insult
First Dorchester stands in for Southie, then this:
Next thing you know, they'll be hiring Trump to play Menino.
Is Rosie O'Donnell still viable?
Was Amos and Andy unavailable? After alienating tens of millions of Americans, is Rosie O'Donnell still viable? I might rather take a risk on Harvey Weinstein! I realize it's not Broadway but the Polish Triangle is within walking distance of Southie, no? The geography is the least of the problem here. God Bless Rosie's lover who took her own life and Rosie's "child" who ran away with horror stories. I wouldn't put her in charge of a Kool-Aid stand (nor advertise her...run the other way) but let that go.
Wait, don't tell me you get Showtime ....
I don't believe it for a second.
No Showtime
No Showtime since the 1980s when it came with HBO and Cinemax. Happy without it. Clowns!
He already pulled the plug on Showtime
He's told everyone here all about that. It had something to do with him calling Showtime's 800 number and talking to someone in "Manilla" or something like that.
Actually that was the Boston Globe's 617 Manila number
I could accept a 1-800 number going overseas but it was the Boston Globe's 617-929-2000 fake Dorchester number that went to Manila, Philippines that bothered me, especially with a few friends still working at the Globe. If I added a second L to Manila, I apologize but I'm glad that it resonated with you. I take pride in spelling but rarely write about Manila, so forgive me.
The young lady in Manila on the phone was great as I canceled the Globe after the fake Trump front page predicting nuclear war and a stock market crash (no war, record stock highs today). That day, when I asked the woman, "where are you?" she willingly told me in broken English, Manila, Philippines and "many, many" Globe subscribers had canceled. I never subscribed to the movie channels so less time on hold to cancel.
We're 6 months in
Those words may well likely come back to bite you Fish. Granted if/when the stock market crashes it will be the Fed's fault, not Trump's. And they'll blame it on someone else just like 1999 and 2008.

Once you're in the Polish Triangle, you ARE in Southie.
Some might disagree ...
In any case, they were filming on Jones Hill a month or so ago, and that's definitely Dorchester.
Do you know what a bridge
is?
Dot or Southie?
The Polish Triange is still in Dorchester, although the architecture and feel of some of the streets is more like Southie. Several home scenes in "Spotlight" that were supposedly set in Southie were filmed in my neighborhood in Dorchester. South Boston is so densely settled that It's easier to shut down a street in Dorchester, as well as to find space to park the crew's trailers. A native might catch the discrepancy between a Southie story and a Dorchester three-decker, but most film viewers would not.
Yes, it’s similar to how you
Yes, it’s similar to how you can’t film cows because they don’t look right on film. You have to use horses painted like cows. The important thing is that it all works out in the end.
Nope - the very northern tip
Nope - the very northern tip of the Triangle is Southie - ~90% of the triangle is in Dot.
Yes, however...
.... if you happened to get arrested anywhere in the triangle, South Boston is where you would go to court. That court's jurisdiction ends at Mt. Vernon street.
Sure
By the way, do you know where the West Roxbury District Court is?
I do!
In the Forest Hills section of Jamaica Plain.
For those who may not know, (not directed at you, waquiot) JP was a section of the town of West Roxbury when the court was created in the 19th century.
Well played
Still, the bridge is the boundary.
Which also means that much like pre-1918 Europe, the Poles are divided.

Not sure court jurisdiction is your best bet
I mean, police District C-6 covers Columbia Point and that's no Southie there.
For that matter, half of Mission Hill's court cases wind up in West Roxbury ...
GL c 218
The courts jurisdictional lines in some cases go back to the 1880s. All depends what the wards and precincts were at the particular time.
As to C-6, Columbia Point, or more specifically the "Harbor Point" development, is north of Mt. Vernon Street.
I don't mind so much that
I don't mind so much that they film in Dorchester instead of Southie (though I do mind it being Rosie). It's sometimes fun watching shows or movies and recognizing locations (and sometimes laughably bad when they try to pass off one thing as another and fail, or what ends up being "next to" something else).
...and for the record, I doubt I'd detect many of the finer distinguishing points between neighborhood architecture.
I was reacting to the description of Polish Triangle as Dorchester. Yes, I know the whole triangle can be described as Polish Triangle, but I view the really Polish part of it (these days) being the northern end of it. I wasn't considering police areas and districts. I view the Polish area as everything from Howell St north (between Boston St and Dot Av).
I'm aware that the city neighborhood definitions (such as parking stickers) have everything south of the expressway being Dorchester, but what do they know? They only own the maps.
They're the same people who managed to put horizontal as well as vertical boundary lines between neighborhoods - they built an addition to the Burke, putting part of that Dorchester HS on the upper floors and the Grove Hall (Roxbury) branch library on the lower floors.
One minute, Rosie O'Donnell
One minute, Rosie O'Donnell is moving to Canda, the next minute she becomes a SMILF.
This city is cursed.
Keep caring about trivial celebrity bullcrap
Keeps the money running to the top while you are outraged/excited over NOTHING.
Which part of Dorchester would that be?
EaDo?
WeDo?
SoDo?
or
NoDo?
WTF is this fetish/obsession Hollyweird has with 'Southie'?
And how come most of the time, when a movie or show is filmed in MA and Boston, they seem oblivious to any neighborhood, town, city outside the confines of downtown, Beacon Hill, North End, South End, 'Southie'?
There's plenty of places that could fill in for South Boston in the surrounding metro Boston area.
Seriously. For the love of
Seriously. For the love of God....STOP MAKING MOVIES ABOUT SOUTHIE.
It's not the same
No one would watch Roslindale Rowdies .
Adam Would
N/t
Wait for the spin-off...
Rozzie Rats.
The Pleasant serving as the hangout for the Rat crew. I'd be all over that.
Only here
Only here would anyone watching a movie notice that scenes are not in Southie. It could be filmed in Lincoln, and 90% of the people watching wouldn't know the difference.
I know people who have lived in Greater Boston their entire
adult lives and can't keep remember that Southie = South Boston and is not the same thing as the South End.
Charlestown...
...gets attention, too. Bank robbers, Townies.
I never knew she was from Southie.
I CAN'T BELIEVE I NEVER NEW ROSIE O'DONNELL WAS FROM SOUTHIE BUT IT DAM SURE MAKES A LOT OF SENSE TO ME NOW.THEY SHOULD ALREADY HAVE A SOUTHIE FLAG WITH FAT ROSIE O'DONNELL INSIDE THE IRISH FLAG COLORS. SO THIS MY HOME TOWN SHE YELLS perfect fit
Why are you yelling?
Why are you yelling?
Rosie
Isn't she a New Yorker? Like an Unashamed New Yorker?!?
Also an actor
Or was Robin Williams actually from City Point? Granted, her accent will probably suck, like his did in Good Will Hunting, but whadaya gonna do?
Wikipedia says "yes"
They closed part of 4th St at
They closed part of 4th St at O St a month or so ago and we were told "you can't walk this way they are filming with Rosie O'Donnell" - so Dot you can have them...we have enough crazy shit going on with traffic in Southie is my hometown all the time now....oh and for the record wasn't she moving out of the country....just saying....
Empty threats to move out of the country if so-and-so
gets elected or such-and-such law gets passed are a bipartisan idiot phenomenon.
Stephen Baldwin didn't move to Canada when Barry won re-election.
Rush Limbaugh didn't flee to Costa Rica as he promised he would do if Obamacare passed, though he did manage to evacuate Florida just before Hurricane Irma hit, despite calling it a leftie hoax earlier. Reality and its well-known liberal bias, and all.
