Police: Drunk guy took out a loaded gun in the men's room of a crowded downtown bar

Boston Police report arresting a Dorchester man on gun charges early Saturday after he tried to fight his way out of being arrested at Coogan's Bar and Grill, 171 Milk St.

Officers arrived at the bar around 12:05 a.m. on a report from bar security about a guy showing a gun around in the men's room. Security staff pointed out the alleged restroom gun waver, Antonio DePina, 29, standing in the middle of the crowded dance floor holding two bottles of beer, police say:

Officers approached the suspect and asked him to step outside to speak with them. When the suspect refused to comply, the officers attempted to gain control of his hands, which he immediately resisted. The bottles of beer fell from the suspects hands as he attempted to pull away from the officers at which time he pushed one of the officers in an attempt to flee. A violent struggle then ensued as the crowd began to gather around the both officers and the suspect. The officers were eventually able to guide the suspect to the floor at which time a loaded 38 Special Smith & Wesson revolver fell out of the suspect’s pants. One officer immediately recovered the firearm as the other officers placed the suspect in custody. After the officers escorted the suspect outside, they noted that he appeared to be heavily intoxicated.

DePina was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, assault and battery on a police officer, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct. Coogan's now faces a hearing before the Boston Licensing Board.

Innocent, etc.

A hip, millennial-magnet city can never have too much!!

How is this any different from any other bar stupidity of the past?

Other than it makes the news now, where it didn't when older people had these same stupidities?

Trust me - the stupid ran pretty thick 30 years ago. Way thicker than this.

Young people to get smashed is some kind of cardinal virtue of city planning.

I realize that you are a neoprohibitionist, but whatever: explain how "having a place to eat and drink" = "encouraging young people to get smashed".

CONCRETE examples, please.

Oh, wait ... you want them to DRIVE somewhere else?

Right.

Bonus points: tell the class how long that there has been a bar in this location given how you yammer about "millenials" and "city planning" and all.

have desired and found creative ways to get 'smashed.' It's like sex; it's not going away.

Would appreciate it if you stopped documenting the increase in crime in the city under his watch.

It's makes the Titans of industry he likes rubbing shoulders with uncomfortable.

Crime in the city is down compared to say 5-10 years ago. Crime does seem more brazen but not more prevalent. Its the same demographic, maybe if Tito could only pay these young men they'd change their nefarious ways.

Yes, crime is down in Boston compared to the bad old days. But shootings are up this year, so let's not be so fast to rest on our laurels.

Crime has been inching up yearly under Marty's administration, and he doesn't exactly seem concerned about it.

Menino brought crime down after decades of efforts, that seems to be atrophying under the new guy.

No, it's not worrying just yet since it still is at historic lows, despite the recent problems. But, the trend lines are going in the wrong direction while we have a mayor in over his head fluttering around.

And yes, we we're better off 10 years ago. Maybe you meant 20? 30?

After all that has been happening in the world lately a man with a loaded gun in a crowded area needs to be taken very seriously. I hope the courts do something to ensure this man can’t do this again or worse given his uneasy behavior.

I take it you haven't read the parade of UHub stories where offenders are walking around Boston in their 3rd or 4th firearm offense without a care in the world.

I’m guessing the crowd that gathered around the officers wasn’t exactly supportive of them.

And since no one will say it since we are all too busy arguing if Marty directly put the gun in this criminal’s hands, I will: THANK YOU BPD.

I like how they "guided him to the floor." He must've been really drunk if he couldn't find it on his own.

That's the best line in the cop's report, hilarious! I don't see a lot of real life resisting arrest situations. Yet I'm still curious how a screenwriter/director/actors would play that out in a movie or TV show.

Too drunk to comprehend the gravity of the situation?

It's Christopher Kimballs's Milk Street

He's basically a senior citizen in a Coogan's crowd. Should've known better, but clearly didn't have the wisdom beyond his years.

Coogan's now faces a hearing before the Boston Licensing Board.

A hearing about what?

Were they expected to frisk everyone who came in? or take down the perp themselves?

Establishments are supposed to take steps to keep their patrons safe, and police and the board want to know whether Coogan's could have done something to prevent this and what they'll be doing going forward.

That's probably their first concern.
