Boston Police report a tip led them to a plastic bag near the baseball field at McKinney Playground, 74 Faneuil St. in Brighton that contained "a .44 caliber F.LLI Pietta revolver along with 100 rounds of .45 caliber ammunition."
Officers recovered the bag around 11:45 a.m. yesterday, police say.

Looks like it might still have a band around the cylinder to prevent damage during shipping.
Also, I can't quite read the barrel but I suspect it says Black Powder Only .44 Caliber.

That particular model is around $400, FYI, and the cartridges and holster bring it up to $500 or so. Owner is DEFINITELY honked off.

I can't speak to this instance but anyone who has their gun stolen has proven they are incapable of safely owning a gun and should no longer be allowed to do so.

here's two scenarios
firearm taken from a legal concealed carrier at gunpoint.
firearm taken from a locked safe because the thieves have time/tools to defeat the safe or even take the safe entirely.

No LTC or permit needed. Any resident over 18 can buy one of those at Cabelas or Basspro. It's classed as a "primitive" firearm.
And the ammunition is the wrong caliber (.45) and format (cartridges) for the gun in question. You can't fire them thar bullets from that thar gun, Hoss.
Good headline and very scary pic but as a combination as likely to go bang as a golf club.

Maybe you should expect to be shot, but I think that the point of the original comment was one that I have made here repeatedly, i.e., because we insist on, among other things, lots of training and good pay and benefits for our police, we have not seen the crazy high numbers of police-involved shootings (justifiable or not) that other jurisdictions have.

Here is how we are all trained, in ever city in America: neutralize a threat that is pointing a weapon at you.
My wife doesn’t want to be a widow, so she’d rather I make the split second decision of whether or not the gun is real or a replica, after I am safe.

But I have worked very, very closely with several police agencies over my career, and I occasionally indirectly represent those agencies and their officers. I have even helped to review some training materials related to interdiction. I understand the "I'd rather be judged by 12 than carried by 6" credo, and I do not disagree with the notion it is intended to convey (even if the phrasing is less than good). I simply believe, based on the training materials that I have seen from other jurisdictions, that the notion of officer discharging his/her service weapon as last option is much better understood and engrained around here than elsewhere. That is all I wanted to convey.

I don't know what's in the training. I certainly hope there's a lot of good training.
I've seen first-hand how badly some Boston police can handle stops. Aggressive, confrontational, loud, escalating tension instead of managing & controlling.
Not a bad force, not a bad group of people, and no indication that the officers I saw were bad people. Just bad managing that has all too good a chance at ending in tragedy someday.

To clarify...
This is a fireable gun. You need black powder, a measuring device/flask, .44 cal balls (bullets), lubricated wads, and Crisco or the like. You then pour in the carefully measured amount of black powder or Pyrodex (LTC required), tamp in the ball, add the wad. Tamp down again. Repeat five times. Grease all with Crisco to prevent chain fire in the cylinder. Attach the caps to the nipples. Yank like hell against the single action. And Voila!
Any Brighton hood rat could figure it out in seconds.

I think you are correct. It looks like the original cylinder has be replaced so that the gun can now fire 45 Long Colt cartridges. That is the type of ammo also pictured with the gun, so it makes sense why they would be together.
