Owner of Everett casino pulls an Eataly - to strip founder's name from the joint

Vital Vegas reports that when the mega-casino in Everett opens, it will be named the Encore Boston Harbor, rather than than the Wynn Boston Harbor because it turns out that Steve Wynn might have had an even worse problem with women than Mario Batali, whose name also is no longer spoken of in the Prudential Center food court that used to have his name splashed all over. Whether this is enough to assuage a state gaming commission pissed off at being lied to, however, remains an open question.

If t state lets Wynn company run/own the casino, whatever name they give it, it will show that the best strategy when you have disqualifying issues to win state contracts is to lie and then take a slap on the wrist as you plead that you are just worried about the people working there and are real sorry. We will see if Charlie and the gambling commission stand up to Wynn Corp. or let them play them. Speaking of Charlie, I know he is reluctant to ever take a position, but he should at least weigh in if he has any balls.

Honestly though, and I dislike Wynn and this whole setup, what is the option?

I know we hate hearing too big to fail but the building is already almost up. Everett has already invested in this set up.

Maybe the state should demand a higher piece of the action as a fine?

They were the runners up, after all. Whether or not they'd want to if the offer was ever (highly unlikely) made is another story.

Mohegan isn't going to run a casino that looks like a Wynn. Hell, Wynn Resorts may even have some sort of trademark or something on the design.

Nobody's going to want the cost of knocking it all down at this point just to build a new building either.

The time for vetting this choice passed. Now comes the time for penalties for lying to/omitting from the commission. And if need be, halting the business until it's in compliance. Just because Wynn *was* associated with the company and the casino doesn't mean he is any longer and if more need to go to meet our regulations, then so be it. But there's zero reason Wynn Resorts doesn't get to own and operate this casino at this point as long as all necessary staff are in compliance with the regulations.

Rebranding the name is just smart business, not something the commission was ever going to require.

Whatever the place is named, old ladies will be cashing their social security checks and head there to legally gamble. It's close to Boston. It will eliminate the Foxwood buses trips they take now.

This is in theory.. But my guess is that foxwoods/mohegan wont lose business. Why? Wynn/Encore will be priced out of my peoples gambling budgets. Even in Vegas, the minimum bet/coin-in is much higher than most. I'm guessing $50 min hand on weekends and nothing less than dollar slots. And thats not mentioning drinks and lack of comps.

Wynn's casinos *talk* a big game about being a higher budget/class establishment, but the rooms cost about the same as any other top name casino on the Strip and there are penny slots too. I played $5/hand BlackJack and $5/ante Ultimate Texas Hold'em table games there.

Drinks on the gaming floor were complimentary the entire time and I was also comp'd for one of my nights just by speaking to one of the Red Card hosts on my way through the casino floor to check out on the final day (in my experience, they tend to nicely comp if you spend money, then ask what they can do for you from that visit on the way out. This is opposite most casinos that expect you to play a lot then send you a mailer later asking you to come back with promises of an upfront comp for a night or meal or whatever).

Not on Tuesday at 8am. The off peak rate will be $15 minimum and it will be at least $25 during peak times at the cheapest tables. boston is a an Uber wealthy area and the market will support those rates.

Vegas is cheaper because there is more competition. I suspect room rates may be cheaper than CT because there is more competition in Boston.

I bet there will be $5 "shared game" tables like they have in Mohegan. One dealer who is told to keep dealing cards but your betting is done on "your hand" which comes from your choices on a video screen in front of you based on the cards dealt by the real dealer. They have roulette the same way. They're going to want to capture both the rich and the common man's dollar. They don't want anyone saying "why don't we go to Mohegan/one of the other MA casinos where we can afford to play".

Also, room rates will be higher because it's essentially a downtown hotel and limited rooms. Nobody has ever said "I need to stay in Uncasville for the night, but I'm not going to the casino".

All the dudes who couldn't care less about sexual assault will be arriving soon to comment about what an outrage this is.

They care that they can get away with it without giving it a second thought - or a first thought.

I'm a dude and am perfectly okay with that Wynn shit going nameless. I'm consistent too, would like to have all references to the sexual predator named Kennedy wiped from the map.

Mario Batali's name hasn't vanished altogether from Eataly at the Pru; I notice that the signage for La Gastronomia still reads "Lidia and Mario's favorite dishes".

Coincidentally NYT ran an article yesterday on how he is considering the possibility for a "second act":
