Haha. I just typed something bemoaning the lack of Globe photos accompanying the piece, and saying I would've especially liked to see how Dina Rudick or Yoon S. Byun would've shot it. But I double-checked Boston.com before posting, and here ya go:

We were way in the back, so before we even left the bathhouse there were already people coming back in. So, you won't get to see the big crowd run in, but you will see my patriotic friends and I.
Kids + Freezing Cold Water = Visit From DSS?
There were people taking their kids to do this idiocy. It's one thing for an adult to jump into icy water. Presumably, the adult knows the risks involved. Parents taking their kids to do it? Any parent identified in the photos or videos should receive an immediate visit from the Department of Social Services, and I say that as a fairly staunch Libertarian.

It's not like they let them go swimming for 30 minutes. Most people had warm cars running and hot beverages ready.
A little cold water never hurt anyone, and is no reason to waste social services time and money.

There's a difference between
There's a difference between splashing in waist deep water, and taking a prolonged swim.
That boys death is sad, but was the result of swimming.
Cold Shock might be a problem for actual swimmers, but what L street does isn't be considered swimming. On top of that, it's put on by the Curley Community Center, so I'm sure there are proper life guards for the event, not to mention the ones most likely participating.
They also require parent consent for those under 18, so they leave it to parents judgment, as it should be.

I thought the same thing when I saw the report on the news. Making children go into ice cold water on a day where it's 6 degrees outside? Doesn't seem like it's in the best interest of the child to me.
