Boston Police report arresting a man they say was hanging around the Mildred Hailey Apartments in Jamaica Plain with a large, fully loaded gun early Sunday.
Police say gang-unit officers were on patrol in the former Bromley-Heath around 12:45 a.m. when they decided to talk to a couple of guys they spotted loitering in a parking lot:
As the officers exited their vehicle, one of the individuals, later identified as Eddy Baez, 26, of Jamaica Plain, turned and took off running while clutching at the waistband area of his pants, leading the officers to believe that he may be armed. Officers pursued the suspect on foot through a nearby courtyard and were approximately ten feet behind him when they observed him pull a large gun (see photo) out of his pants with his right hand. Officers continued their pursuit, with their firearms now drawn, while giving numerous verbal commands for the suspect to drop the weapon, which he refused. As the officers closed in on the suspect, he threw the firearm into a nearby descending staircase in the area of 9 Horan Way. Officers were finally able to catch up to the fleeing suspect in the area of 11 Bickford Street where he was placed in custody after a brief but violent struggle. Officers were then able to recover the discarded firearm which was determined to be a fully loaded 9mm AA Arms AP9 pistol.
Baez was charged with unlawful possession of a firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, carrying a loaded firearm and resisting arrest, police say.
Innocent, etc.

Scary!

What a scary-looking weapon. Who the hell makes and sells something like that in a supposedly civilized law-abiding society?
I'm glad that's off the streets!
Scary-looking is subjective.

Objectively, it's really no different than any other semi-automatic pistol. And at 9mm, it's not high firepower compared to a lot of other common firearms. Nothing to get extra-worked-up about solely due to its looks.

Don't be scared based on looks: It can still kill & injure a whole bunch of people quickly.
But can it?

I mean, any firearm, but its very nature, can kill, but I did a tiny bit of looking into this, and it does look like its appearance is more menacing than what it can do. From how I read Wikipedia, it's a fancy pistol, with the only difference between it and a police officer's sidearm being the look. But then again, I'm not a gun guy. It is interesting that the company ceased manufacturing of it in 1994.

I am a gun guy and can tell you that these pistols were very cheaply made and are not reliable at all. It's a crude blow-back design so you need to have it properly lubricated and just the right load of ammo to make it function properly. Also, the design makes it look "tactical" but it's very impractical to hold, carry--not something you can even holster.
I don't know a lot about guns.

But, if you're correct about the finickyness of the ammo, he's SOL. Looks like he went to the 'spare, mixed random rounds' bin at Building 19.

Much like a car, if it's in the wrong hands.
Wrong

It's not like a car at all. A car is not made specifically to kill, although, yes, it can in the wrong hands. A gun is made specifically to kill what it shoots in any hands, right or wrong.

First you said I'm wrong. Then you said exactly what I said. Which is it? I specifically did not bring up design intent. Just pointed out the fact that there are other things that can be used kill or injure, if the user so desires.
My initial comment was merely pointing out the difference between looks and functionality. That's all.

The scary thing is how cheaply made and poorly maintained it is, suggesting it will be used once and thrown away

The appearance isn't the point...

I think it's completely justified for anyone to get "worked-up about" a guy illegally carrying this firearm, trying to run from the police, and taking it out during the pursuit. Even if it was small & pink, it can still cause harm if used unnecessarily.
Agreed, mostly.

Except for "the appearance isn't the point." Appearance was the entire point of the first comment, which is why I wrote what I wrote in my reply to that comment. First sentence:
Re-read my comment, and note the "extra" before "worked-up." I think you misinterpreted my remarks.
I did understand what you meant...

and I'm sorry if you took my headline as being stated to you specifically. Rather, I should've stated the appearance isn't the point of what occurred (overall), not "isn't the point of what you specifically stated".
Thanks though for sharing your viewpoint!

Admirable job by the BPD that they had the bravery/restraint not to shoot this guy when he pulled out the gun.
