Storrowed truck on Storrow Drive

Ryan Frazer reports:

STORROWED

And not just any storrowing, but a trifecta: Hit a bridge. Check. Flipped on its side. Check. Roof peeled off. Check, check, check.

Wesbound at the Fenway/Kenmore exits just in time for rush hour, of course.

Too bad GPS couldn"t have a default warning in advance about this shit. Obviously the sign on the bridge isn't good enough.

Signs, laws, crosswalks, bike lanes, fire hydrants, no parking signs, traffic signals, speed limits, etc. aren't enough to deter some drivers from dangerous and prohibited behavior. Amazing how many arrogant idiots there are that think rules don't apply to them.

There needs to be a big floppy sign that you smack hard with your truck before you get far enough to do real damage.

They already have that at every entrance.

Some GPSs and related nav systems let you set some parameters like height restriction.

I'm going to take a wild ass guess and say this guy a) didn't have one, or b) had one but didn't set it up

If he had one, it was a non-commercial one which doesn't list restrictions or divert you because those are cheaper than the more specialized ones that avoid low-height roads.

At the height of rush hour. Check.
Complete closure of the off-ramps Check
Gridlock on Storrow Drive & Soldiers Field Road from end to end. Check.
Live coverage on the local TV newscasts. Check.

And done it when Comm Ave, the BU Bridge and the Pike are all crippled, too!

We didn't check-off the "spill the cargo all over the road" box.

It'd be some regional interest or poignant if it were the Red Sox equipment truck (obviously the wrong month for that) or the last truckload of candy coming from the Necco plant.

The whole Comm Ave. thing would just be bonus points on the base score.

This is a truly top of the line performance - full canopener with a half twist!

Crikey! The Storrow clearances are obviously obsolete. The whole American OTR transportation industry shouldn't be expected to have to accommodate our dysfunction. Anywhere else, and this situation would have been remedied long ago. We just spent a trillion dollars to take apart and put back together the Longfellow. We can't dredge Storrow another 8 feet deeper at about 3 places and just be done with this madness forever?

I'll give you a hint: it's not dirt.

When Houston flooded post-hurricane, the world got to see how many of their big 'overpasses' were actually underpasses, with the freeway crossings happening below grade. Houston's built on a bayou. The water table is barely below the surface in many places. Obviously, these underpasses can become massive sumps in a biblical-level rainstorm, like happened in Texas. But some lessons learned, plus some improved pumping systems make this a solvable problem.

I'll give you a hint. It forms part of the border between Boston and Brookline and is kind of muddy. And it's a river.

More cost and environmental damage than it could possibly be worth?

Seriously - the MASS PIKE is within blocks of here. Not only is there no possible need to make an obsolete parkway friendly to trucks THERE IS NO NEED FOR STORROW AT ALL.

So ... unless YOU are going to pay billions out of your own pocket for this, I suggest you pipe down because any serious engineering or resilience audit of this roadway might result in permanent closure.

PS: All of Storrow Drive is already in a Category 1-2 Surge zone. There is absolutely no way that anyone will want to spend that kind of money and destroy that much parkland and disrupt that much of the city for a road that won't be passable in even a minor emergency so some moron with a CDL who can't read or use a proper map set won't crash. This is a state road, remember - better to spend the money on the MBTA by far.

The only way to fix this road is to close it and connect it to the Esplanade.

If only there was some way to prevent this...

Starting to believe there's a conspiracy among police, tow companies, and rental truck companies all waiting to gauge drivers on fines and fees.

Moron drivers. Nothing more. Pay better, maybe?

$0.00

It’s a state road.

Direct cost may be zero, but folks not getting to work costs us all something.

But the guy who decided to stand around and live tweet the accident asked about cost to the city, which is a nice round number.

I know it would be quite expensive, but why not just tear the storrow bridges down. There is no benefit in them being short.
