The T stopped Orange Line service for a bit so that officials could investigate smoke coming from the tracks at Downtown Crossing and then turn on fans to make it go away.

There was smoke and a strong

There was smoke and a strong smell in the DTX station, and a number of people on the edge of the platform looking to see what the source was. As usual, no communication from the T. Someone must have gone to find someone of authority because one of the volunteers was walking with a walkie-talkie along the platform, telling people to get away from the edge, but providing no further info. Finally a train came in with it's front door open and a T employee standing there probably looking for the source of the smoke. Just another day on the T.
It's OK

If you smell smoke.

If you smell smoke, you should pull the fire alarm. (Unless it's just some idiot smoking)
The fire alarms are small red boxes with a handle, usually located near exits.
Many T stations have fire alarms that look like this:

NOTE! Lifting the protective case may sound a local tone (to deter misuse). In an actual fire, please pull the actual handle (DON'T JUST LIFT THE CASE!) to sound the fire alarms.
