Part of L Street to look a bit different tomorrow

Eileen Murphy reports a road crew was busy on L Street between East Broadway and Emerson Street tonight:
An island (of sorts) going in to get cars into one lane where L St. narrows.
The goal is to "calm" motorists into going slower on the street. In July, a toddler in a stroller died in the aftermath of a two-vehicle crash at L and East 5th streets.

It's not just an island. The rest of L Street before and after East Broadway has been striped to two lanes. No more dangerous ambiguity.
I have my fingers crossed that they'll actually do something about the double-parkers next to Starbucks and Dunkin Donuts.

AND in front of Boston Bagel Co. I hate those double parkers. If I can't find an actual spot, I'm not going to double park to make my morning better with coffee and a bagel.

It must be nice not to be handicapped. There are plenty of residents who cannot use bikes but would love to. Thanks for the reminder.
I gotta disagree
If they constrained capacity, that would make traffic bad. They are not doing that. This just makes traffic slow down to what the speed limit is (25 MPH.) If you really wanted to go 35 MPH through Southie, rather than trying to get from point A to point B, Old Colony would be the better route for you.

Seems like that still creates the intended effect of keeping people from speeding, by forcing people who can't bear to go the speed limit to go somewhere else.

It's good to see, but it's also sad that we usually need a martyr giving up her/his life before a dangerous road section receives proper improvement or traffic enforcement.
Yes, we need to stop waiting for people to die
A lot of traffic calming work has been done in Rozzie over the past few years after a woman was killed crossing Washington. Perhaps she would still be alive if the city hadn't waited for her death and subsequent neighborhood activism to take steps for making the streets safer.
