Walsh hires ex-state rep convicted of punching a woman as an aide
By adamg on Sat, 10/27/2018 - 12:13pm
The Globe reports former state Rep. Carlos Henriquez as an aide to work on several issues, including reducing violence in the city.
A city spokesperson said the mayor believes in second chances and that Henriquez, convicted and expelled from the House in 2014 has long worked to support youth, reduce violence and help people with trauma.

Oh Marty - you showed such promise
I didn't vote again for Marty and won't in the future. He is part of the political and developer class and is beholden to only them. Not to his voting constituents. This appointment sounds more like keeping politically talented (i.e., pumps well for votes every four years) rather than appointing a person who would be good at the actual job.
Not unlike the two appointees who attempted a union shakedown.
Not unlike allowing the construction of the massive storage building in JP where housing should have been built.
Not unlike renting part of Boston, including the Common, to the developers and major contractors of the city.
Not unlike his Marty's lie about ending the developer controlled BRA/BPDA.
Not unlike doing nothing about Long Island for 4 years and so aiding in the creation of a new drug zone by Boston University Hospital.
I am sure that Marty means well in all that he does. But he is part of a class of citizens that sees the rest of the city, anyone who isn't a millionaire and can thrown great sums his way, as the children citizenry who need his paternal guidance. Because Marty always knows best.
Renting the Common?
Are you referring to the failed Olympic bid, or something else?
Maybe he means 5k races
End the proliferation of 5k races! It's gone too far.
You have seen that he is working on Long Island access
If you missed it in the Globe and Herald, you should check out the Patriot Ledger. They've probably run a few stories on it.
Heck, Adam might have even written up and item or two on the proposal to rebuild the bridge.
Yes the Common
Add Newmarket and the conscience of city employees. Marty's claim that he did not know that city employees could be prevented from criticizing the Olympics event is disingenuous. City government has a department called the Law Department. It is there job to review documents, contracts and what not. That the Law Department would allow a clear violation of the 1st Amendment to pass indicates either incompetence on their part of that Marty wanted to pretend he never knew anything.
Interesting in light of his Kavanaugh remarks

Second chances are a good thing
But for an anti violence pos,t to a guy convicted of violence ? Not so cool for taxpayers to be on the hook for this... politically tone deaf.
surprised to see this from Joyce Linehan
someone whose politics and general outlook I really like.
The engagement center and more
First off the Fox 25 expose for those who are still not familiar w Methadone Mile and the mayor's tone deaf response to that area and it is a slap to folks like the New Market businesses who have doe their best to maintain the neighborhood. For the record Fox missed the methamphetamine shooting gallery inside the storage units just beyond the Engagement C
enter. Please go back Fox 25, there are more stories if any body cares? As long as the tourists and the owners of the 3k + housing units are shielded from this de facto Hamsterdam then so be it. As for the the idea of Carlos H a far better choice with a proven community track record is Greg Davis from Metro Boston Alive who was on the ground and doing this work long before Marty came around.
Different types of violence, I suppose
As you yourself note, he's been a tireless worker on the topic of the kinds of senseless crimes that make headlines then fade away- shootings, gang violence, and the cycles of violence they cause. He's certainly no angel- he deserved his punishment- but he's been punished already.
That said, he better stay on his best behavior. A second chance is one thing, but few would give someone a third chance.
Revolting. Pieces. Of.
Revolting. Pieces. Of. Garbage. are men who beat women. Shame on you Mayor Walsh!
You'er all a bunch of racists
You'er all a bunch of racists. Carlos deserves a second chance. How many chances do white men get?
I'll bite.
How many chances do white men get?
Victims of domestic violence
Victims of domestic violence deserve better!
Plenty
Perhaps you've heard there's a new US supreme court justice?
That's exactly my point. A
That's exactly my point. A white guy can get whatever he wants, but a minority gets a second chance and you're all up in arms about it. Racists!
And my point
Most of us, myself included, are disgusted that the judge was confirmed.
Hold on for this one
Everyone is subject to criticism, even black men.
What a sad attempt to inject race, try harder.
I say you are a racist. And
I say you are a racist. And you condone abusing of women. Shame on both Marty and the coward he just appointed.
Interesting move Marty
Does that mean Felix Arroyo will be rehired? Does this mean any Boston cops and firemen charged with domestic abuse or sexual harassment be given a second chance? How about street workers and teachers will they be given a second and third chance?
Silence from the women who serve on the city council speaks volumes about political patronage games being played in the city.
Boston cops and firefighters get second chances with DV cases.
Happens a lot actually. Most jobs will hire you with a DV history. Politics can be a different story though....
DV conviction = federal law
DV conviction = federal law says no firearms for you.
MA treats even accusations of DV as grounds to deny a permit.
But the state is perfectly fine with allowing the same people to carry a gun on their badge and have sovereign immunity for all sorts of on the job physical behavior?
DAFUQ!
Firefighters carry firearms?
I'd better be nicer to them.
But hey, what would Pete know about the BPD, anon?
You don't think the women on
You don't think the women on the City Council are there to help women? They are there to reinvent the wheel over and over again pose for photo ops and accept awards, Never seen anything like it, it is sick waste of influence and power, pathetic.
Class act. What a well
Class act. What a well spoken and strong leader of the Democratic Party Walsh is.
Think of this
Next time property taxes go up. City government = corruption, nepotism. Always will.
Property taxes have not gone
Property taxes have not gone up under Walsh, ok?
BS
They have, too. And some people have been whacked with really big tax increases because the assessments on their houses have gone up way faster than the rest of the city (think parts of South Boston) - which is good for those of us whose houses have not appreciated to as great an extent (we have no plans to move, so are grateful that we pay less in taxes now than, oh, five years ago).
Your house may have been
Your house may have been assessed for more, due to the market value, but that does not mean the TAX has gone up.
Come back after you read up on how property taxes work ...
In Massachusetts in general and Boston in particular.
Maybe I don't understand
it either.
THIS (link to Boston tax rate PDF) implies the tax rate for residential property has gone down.
Now if your property assessed value goes up, then yes, your taxes go up. But the rate has gone down.
Unless I have no idea of what I speak.
It’s that strange quirk
Rates go down while values go up.
Either way, the bottom line is that one rarely pays less in property tax from year to year.
Extremely dissapointed in Walsh
Surely there were many other candidates with out a history of sexual violence on their record.
This is an extremely bad decision. I'm dissappointed in Walsh and the other "leaders" who are silent. I spoke out against Kavanaugh and I'll speak out about this appointment. I'm disgusted.
Pension grab for Rep. Henriquez
Mayor Walsh served in the legislature with the domestic abuse convict Henriquez. Don't forget, Henriquez was also photographed with Sen. Elizabeth Warren, a photo quickly removed from the website.
This is strictly a pension grab where Henriquez "vests" after ten years service, full pension and health/dental care for life. He already has several years in government that count. Otherwise, he's most likely unemployable. Walsh isn't the sharpest knife in the drawer but takes care of his friends.
I wouldn't be surprised if the "violence" part of the job title will put him in Group 4, the lucrative police and fire pension program. Sickening.
Agreed about hte pensino and
Agreed about hte pensino and benefits ... but don't forget that Carlos' mother is a very powerful person, in both the national Democratic Party and the Boston housing scene.
(And Marty Walsh wants as many friends as he can get in both of those circles.)
Sandra Henriquez:
- Ten years as Boston Housing Authority CEO
- A few years at Maloney Properties, whose founder Mark Maloney ran the BRA under Mayor Menino
- 10 years as the Boston YWCA Board member
(Interesting side note: Maloney and his wife, Georgia Murray bought the former South End YWCA (at the time of hostel/lodging house) at 40 Berkeley Street for $8.5 million in 2011, then sold it in 2014 for $17. million.
In an ironic twist, Georgia Murray runs a group called Preservation for Affordable Housing. She's also the Rose Kennedy Greenway board chair.)
- 5 years working for the Obama Administration, overseeing public housing.
Currently CEO of Rebuilding Together, a national organization dedicated (ahem) to rebuilding inner-city housing/projects.
This outrageous hire has less to do with this thug, and more to do with the connections his mother brings to Walsh.
It is really disappointing
It is really disappointing nothing in Boston matters but property, it feels like nobody really lives here, just rents or holds, lame for a city. No great institutions or feeling of civic ownership.
Where are you actually from?
Because you don't really sound like somebody who lives in Boston.
