What makes a good reporter

By anon

What makes a good reporter (like our man Adam) means checking in on all types of media, whether conservative or liberal to bring more awareness to us. Doesn't mean he favors Howie like the way you're implying!!

If one considers Howie Carr a good news source. He's a commentator more than he's a reporter.

I mean, I read the Herald, but something tells me I'm in the minority on this website.

Howie as a reporter

By Anony-mouse

I've listened to Howie now and then over the past 10-15 years. Much less in recent years since he's just been anti-obama and then pro-trump, all-the-damned-time.

But before that, I had the feeling he was an outstanding reporter. He seemed to actually "report" on the layers of relationships and swampiness that we all complain about. Things like patronage hiring, no-show jobs, corruption in the Big Dig and UMass Boston, should bother us all.

I feel like he was one of the best. Back in the day when he actually reported and before he became insufferable.

Howie's bike accident is significantly less serious

By anon
Sun, 11/25/2018 - 2:44pm

than the couple of times he's mysteriously crashed his car into telephone poles and other objects at odd hours in Wellesley (at which times the WPD didn't administer a breathalyzer for some odd reason).

Thanks to Abraham for sharing important concussion info

By mg

Too many people, including doctors, are unaware of how serious and debilitating concussions can be, and that symptoms can worsen over the first few days.

A couple of years ago I had a fall where the ER doc didn't detect a concussion but by the end of the week it was clear I had a mild one that affected my ability to work and do activities for a few weeks. Fortunately it wasn't nearly as severe as Abraham's, but I learned you can't trust the initial assessment.

I have a couple of friends whose teens suffered major concussions that have caused life-altering post-concussion syndrome - in one case lasting several years, after having been allowed back on the soccer pitch way too soon after a previous concussion. Very serious stuff.

Sorry that happened to you, mg, and I'm glad that you recovered. Concussions can be even more horrific than many, if not most people realize. I know a couple of people who've had concussions--one person has had concussions that are job related, and the other person who'd been hit by a car on her bike--twice. They weren't able to come to TKD class for awhile, or to spar, either.

Here's hoping that Yvonne Abrams has a full, speedy recovery, and that she comes back and resumes writing for the Globe soon.

Yvonne’s writing about her

Yvonne’s writing about her personal experience with concussion is quite enlightening and pretty funny as well, I highly recommend it.

Isn’t bike riding reserved exclusively to whiny liberals? I never would have pictured Howie Carr riding a bike!

her concussion is rather enlightening, and is recommended reading, but not necessarily that funny, when one realizes that kind of damages that concussions can cause, either long-term, or permanently. Here's hoping Yvonne has a full recovery from her concussion.

Speaking of bikes and concussions

By SwirlyGrrl

One reason I wear a helmet is that I've had far too damn many of them already - car crash before seat belts were required to be in cars (1965 Merc Comet), playground accidents, playing soccer goal, etc.

If I get squashed by a truck driven by Joe Stupidass Exurborube, it won't help. If I take another header on a poorly maintained railroad crossing, it will.

That must've been awful--getting in so many crashes and having concussions. Sorry that happened to you. It's true that a helmet won't help if a truck driver runs somebody over, but it's agreed that helmets help save lives in the event of a header on a poorly-maintained road or wherever

I've never had any concussions myself, but I wear a helmet as a preventative measure.

Whitey Bulger is dead?

I'd cut him some slack - I am a very experienced cyclist, and I have had two single vehicle "own goal" sorts of crashes due to road hazards. Sometimes it is cyclist error, sometimes shit happens.

More likely he's morose.

The extended world of Bulger is about 1/4 of Howie's subject material.

Not morose that he'll have to find new things to write about. He'll keep writing the old ones, rehash some books, find some old black & white photos to circulate. He has no shame or any particular ambition to do anything new.

Morose, rather, that Whitey's arrest and now his murder happened without Howie breaking any significant portion of the stories.

I believe Howie was in Mar-a-Lago this weekend

I believe Howie was in Mar-a-Lago this weekend at President Trump's resort. I know there are all kinds of recreational activities there including a nearby bike trail. Get well Howie.

As for Yvonne Abraham, did anyone notice she was missing for four months?
