NorthEndWaterfront.com reports a company that runs a Ferris wheel in Montreal wants to build a 200-foot-tall Ferris Wheel on Long Wharf - along with a liquor-serving cafe.
Building new pilings for the Ferris wheel at the end of the wharf would, the company hopes, let it avoid the never-ending battle over whether any private concern could be built at the tip of the existing wharf.

These terrible trends have to end. Especially tax increment financing (TIF). My home town of Old Lyme Conn nearly bankrupted itself via TIFs. Boston needs to analyze the trends of the day and say NO

Thank you! This is very instructive. I have heard that there is, in fact, an East Boston proposal as well. The ubiquity of these proposals seems to indicate that someone within the city is promoting this concept. However, these renderings lack the two cafes and the outdoor seating for 700 proposed for the Long Wharf site. Needless to say, the proponents have declined to go public with those renderings.

Go the fuck away, since you clearly haven't noticed the water over the ends of the piers problem we're having...

Have a few drinks, get on the Ferris wheel, fall into the harbor. Brilliant.

I guess stupid here has never noticed the planes flying over their head while they're in line waiting to get a couple of tube steaks at Sullies. Please stay in Dorchester from now on.

Put it on Sargents Wharf, not Long Wharf

Please leave Long Wharf alone. Put your Ferris wheel instead on vacant, nearby Sargents Wharf.
Sargents Wharf isn't vacant.

Sargents Wharf isn't vacant. There's a business there - a parking lot. Also, the Harborwalk goes along there.
Vacant? Perhaps you were thinking of some of the properties between Union Wharf and the Coast Guard - 20 years ago. Some of THAT was pretty vacant - then.
A Ferris wheel at Sargents Wharf wouldn't block the Harborwalk

It might even enhance it, compared to the current conditions there. A parking lot is not a good use of this land.

For years the city has been assuring the community that Sargent’s Wharf will be used for a purpose which actually benefits the residents, like affordable housing. Climate change and harbor flooding may affect the feasibility of that use. The city is now talking about using the area for flood mitigation and green space. In any event, the plan to use it for community purposes is unchanged to my knowledge. A 200-foot structure with two 2-story cafes and outdoor seating for 700 can hardly be called a community purpose, especially in a neighborhood with over 100 restaurants. There are plenty of things in the North End/Waterfront for tourists to see and do and we welcome hundreds of visitors every day. The Montreal wheel was not put into an area which was already thriving. It was part of a revitalization plan for a neglected area. If Boston really wants one of these things, it should do the same. The developers should not dictate the site.

I’d much rather enjoy the views from a high speed gondola type system. Could that be part of the solution to our T / rideshare / car / bike problems? Where would it run? No one wants to see that crap. A ferris wheel is so impractical in Bean town. We could use amusing transportation not amusement.
