I just became a statistic. Now to figure out if I can do this Universal Hub/bloggy thing full time and actually make money at it (well, enough to support a family on, that is).

h.b. at Soxaholix too

You may be a statistic, but you are certainly not alone. The rumors around h.b.'s office over at Soxaholix are coming true and it sounds like they're shutting down his job site soon.
If it gets too bad, don't be afraid to setup a paypal link. I'm sure you would get a very decent "first swell" of support from the community when you first put it up.

Adam, I'm sorry to welcome you into the unemployed journalists club. Hope you have severance. I'll join the chorus here that says the Globe would scoop you up if they were smart, but I have a feeling you could definitely turn UHub into more of a moneymaker.

I am so sorry to hear this Adam! It has not been a good time for those of us in the media, and I have to admit I am surprised you got a pink slip of all people. Let's hope we all find work soon... I am hoping for the best.

Like so many other folks have commented, this site is just too important not to grow. You have so many dedicated readers who are your biggest fans (OK, your family probably likes you more) and we would do anything to help. As yet another unemployed writer of many many years, there are freelance writing jobs out there that could keep you busy, but give you enough time to grow this site into a real money maker. My guess is, you have enough traffic to get some big advertisers lined up.
Worry more about you than us as far as creating revenue is concerned. We'll all be OK. But we want you to be OK as well. And just ask if you need anything. Someone out here in UHland will be able to help.

I think there's definitely a business model for a site like UH to provide for a full-timer. If I were in your position, I would absolutely pursue this as your main source of income.
I think you'd have to grow it to be more of a hyperlocal media thing, beyond just the valuable aggregator it is now, but I think your background might be a good fit. I hear that myballard.com (a hyperlocal news site for a Seattle neighborhood) is doing well, might be a model to look at.
I've got more ideas, and some resources, if you ever need to bounce ideas off of anyone, my email address is in this form!
Good luck, Adam!

And what can we do to help out? For the time being I'm clicking all the ads, okay. (Apparently they serve food at Chili's. Who knew?)

Adam, sorry and stunned to hear this. Thought they'd keep their best folks up to the end, but guess not. But I really do think this will be a good thing in the end, with you winding up in a Real Good Place. Unfortunately, you wouldn't be able to blog on politics -- or show any snarkiness -- if you work for somebody's Mayoral campaign.

Adam —
I am so sorry to hear about your layoff. I've always thought that if you could give UH your full-time attention, you could turn it into something people would emulate across the country. But now is not the best time for that.
So, yes, the Boston Globe should hire you as quickly as it can and move Universal Hub onto Boston.com. We all know the Globe is shrinking, but it needs a strategy for the future. If it's not going to have as many reporters, then it's got to offer some intelligent aggregation of what's already out there.
What about it, Globe?

We've seen it often enough through the years. And we've actually seen good come of it. I am absolutely sure you're going to fall into Category 2.

I'm also disabling my ad-blocker for this site; please consider the Amazon link and Paypal suggestions and in the meantime, put your feet up, have an Irish coffee and be glad you at least don't have to commute today in yet another snowstorm. And if there is anything any of us can do, please don't hesitate to put it out there.

10 ad clicks later...

It was really tough to get to a comment screen -- I somehow kept clicking on those ad things all over the page. This may become a habit. Fill up the page with 'em. Or get a sponsor... like "Citizen's Bank Universal Hub Brought to You by Roche Bros."
Sorry to hear it, Adam. I'll put money on the Globe, they will absolutely need somebody who knows the news to keep figuring out how to grab headlines and ledes automatically from other local newspapers -- and how to defeat various roadblocks thrown up by those papers' websites -- all the while adding in bitter sarcasm and thoughtful insight.
If not, I bet that newly-promoted DeLeo might need a press officer. Anything to get better press than his predecessor. Worked for Derjue.
Maybe now you'll have time for blogging?

Believe it or not, it's called click fraud, and the advertising companies watch for it.
Just be more willing to consider the ads...or provide feedback to Adam on what kind of ads you think would be good to see on the site.
For example, maybe an all-weather french toast delivery service would be perfect advertisers here.

By ShadyMilkMan

"Gaffin's ability to find what's interesting, entertaining and important while holding down a demanding day job has always been awe-inspiring. If he were able to devote his full attention to it, Universal Hub would only become better. (In most respects, anyway. No doubt he would no longer offer his acidic observations about certain Globe columnists.)"
The Globe should take the lead of the Faux... I mean Fox Network and allow itself to be openly mocked in its own pages/website. When you watch a Fox tv show or movie nine times out of ten a random swipe at media in general results in a slam on Fox itself. It shows that Fox has a sense of humor and it gets the name out there again, people also forgive them for mentioning the name so many times because its almost always putting Fox in a bad light (normally people hate it when you self promote.) Think of it this way, you attack Globe columns at least once a day and LINK to them... I bet you it would increase readership, and advertisers don's care why viewership is up, they just want to reach more people.

I'm very sorry to hear about your layoff, and hope that this will prove to be the proverbial blessing in disguise -- hopefully by way of turning UH into the paying gig it should be for you.
