Joining the gainfully unemployed

I just became a statistic. Now to figure out if I can do this Universal Hub/bloggy thing full time and actually make money at it (well, enough to support a family on, that is).

Sorry to hear that, Adam. Any juicy details?

If you become destitute, I'll treat you to a pizza at The Pleasant. That's one meal you can count on, anyway :-)

It was a layoff. Yeah, it sucks, but the company's been good to me over the years, so nothing juicy to report.

Adam,

Very sorry to hear your news. UH is great, has better news than the newspapers, and you are very talented....it's just a matter of time that you find another good job..hope it's a short wait for you. These days, no one is safe from layoffs.

How about all of us sign into linkedin and recommend Adam? Having 5000 people all call you a beacon of light in the city probably says something?

up
Voting closed 0

It's really not a good idea to link up to any old stranger. The point of LinkedIn is to only link with people you know, trust, have worked with, believe in, etc. Or so I was told and have seen people act...but maybe some people are looser about it than I am.

Clarification: I don't mean that I wouldn't link to Adam- I mean that Adam might not want to link with random weirdos like us.

up
Voting closed 0

As a general rule with my Linked in I only accept/add people as connections if I think they can offer an answer to a simple question like "How do you know Shadymilkman?" "What is the quality of Shadymilkmans work?" "Do you even know who Shadymilkman is?"

Sure I could add Adam as a connection, but what happens when someone asks him about knowing me? He is going to say "he is some guy who is a serial commentor on my blog, other then that I dont much about him, except for the fact he seems to know Nahant pretty well."

up
Voting closed 0

(That's 2 kinds, in decimal)

  1. Open connectors, or TopLinked people, love connecting everywhere. Send 'em an invite, and they'll link to you. They typically have 500+ links, and advertise their linking preferences heavily.
  2. Sane people, erm, well, the rest of us, link only to people they know and trust, as you note.

Actually, even amongst sane people, there's wide variety of what sort of links are accepted. I definitely agree on the "quality vs. quantity" side - I go for quality only, and have actually dropped a few people who I realized I really didn't know very well on my profile.

But it's also a good point about which of us Adam might actually want to link to. 8->

Like so many other folks have commented, this site is just too important not to grow. You have so many dedicated readers who are your biggest fans (OK, your family probably likes you more) and we would do anything to help. As yet another unemployed writer of many many years, there are freelance writing jobs out there that could keep you busy, but give you enough time to grow this site into a real money maker. My guess is, you have enough traffic to get some big advertisers lined up.

Worry more about you than us as far as creating revenue is concerned. We'll all be OK. But we want you to be OK as well. And just ask if you need anything. Someone out here in UHland will be able to help.

up
Voting closed 0

Okay, now that you are employment-challenged, how can we kick in a few dollars through the website so that it doesn't become a "keep UHub up versus feed Kidlet" situation?

I think there's definitely a business model for a site like UH to provide for a full-timer. If I were in your position, I would absolutely pursue this as your main source of income.

I think you'd have to grow it to be more of a hyperlocal media thing, beyond just the valuable aggregator it is now, but I think your background might be a good fit. I hear that myballard.com (a hyperlocal news site for a Seattle neighborhood) is doing well, might be a model to look at.

I've got more ideas, and some resources, if you ever need to bounce ideas off of anyone, my email address is in this form!

Good luck, Adam!

That is some suck-ass news. Man but this economic climate has now kicked too many awesome people in the teeth. How do you kick it back?

Adam, sorry and stunned to hear this. Thought they'd keep their best folks up to the end, but guess not. Adam โ€”

I am so sorry to hear about your layoff. I've always thought that if you could give UH your full-time attention, you could turn it into something people would emulate across the country. But now is not the best time for that.

So, yes, the Boston Globe should hire you as quickly as it can and move Universal Hub onto Boston.com. We all know the Globe is shrinking, but it needs a strategy for the future. If it's not going to have as many reporters, then it's got to offer some intelligent aggregation of what's already out there.

What about it, Globe?

up

It was really tough to get to a comment screen -- I somehow kept clicking on those ad things all over the page. This may become a habit. Fill up the page with 'em. Or get a sponsor... like "Citizen's Bank Universal Hub Brought to You by Roche Bros."

Sorry to hear it, Adam. I'll put money on the Globe, they will absolutely need somebody who knows the news to keep figuring out how to grab headlines and ledes automatically from other local newspapers -- and how to defeat various roadblocks thrown up by those papers' websites -- all the while adding in bitter sarcasm and thoughtful insight.

If not, I bet that newly-promoted DeLeo might need a press officer. Anything to get better press than his predecessor. Worked for Derjue.

Maybe now you'll have time for blogging?

Believe it or not, it's called click fraud, and the advertising companies watch for it.

Just be more willing to consider the ads...or provide feedback to Adam on what kind of ads you think would be good to see on the site.

For example, maybe an all-weather french toast delivery service would be perfect advertisers here.

"Gaffin's ability to find what's interesting, entertaining and important while holding down a demanding day job has always been awe-inspiring. If he were able to devote his full attention to it, Universal Hub would only become better. (In most respects, anyway. No doubt he would no longer offer his acidic observations about certain Globe columnists.)"

The Globe should take the lead of the Faux... I mean Fox Network and allow itself to be openly mocked in its own pages/website. When you watch a Fox tv show or movie nine times out of ten a random swipe at media in general results in a slam on Fox itself. It shows that Fox has a sense of humor and it gets the name out there again, people also forgive them for mentioning the name so many times because its almost always putting Fox in a bad light (normally people hate it when you self promote.) Think of it this way, you attack Globe columns at least once a day and LINK to them... I bet you it would increase readership, and advertisers don's care why viewership is up, they just want to reach more people.

Dan Kennedy thinks that the Boston Globe should acquire Universal Hub and Adam.

But has Adam laid down the gauntlet? He suggests taking on boston.com directly with a less-expensive ad-driven business model:

โ€œI think there is a market for a news/discussion site in Boston -- one that can provide a useful service to visitors and make money at ad rates a lot lower than boston.com charges,โ€ Gaffin said in an email, referring to the site operated by the Boston Globe.

Go for it, Adam! Until the Globe cries uncle!

As others have said, this might be a rare chance for local and national news organizations to snap up one of the handful of people who could make all the difference in whether they succeed or fail online.

Adam, you're the man. I can't get you employed, but I can show my gratitude via a testimonial:

I've been registered at UHub for "3 years and 50 Weeks". I've been reading Adam's online work since '97 at boston-online.com and the Wicked Good Conference. Anyone looking to employ Adam's UHub talents should know that he not only has a dedicated readership, but he retains readers and has created a loyal and viable long-lasting online community and social network.

And I know I'm not the only one who's been kicking around long-term; I still see the likes of Ron Newman and eeka, who've been around forever, and other long-termers like Dave and Neal. No independent outlet in Boston has come anywhere close to cultivating and retaining such a consistent and dedicated online readership with vibrant community engagement, and certainly no one has been doing it for 13+ years.

No one in Boston and few people anywhere on the internet have Adam Gaffin's track record in building such an enduring, permanent, sustainable, and flourishing social network and community. The proof is in the pudding.

Adam, thanks for your hard work and your energetic and undying commitment to making this work. Best of luck in whatever comes next!

I'm a little late reading today's (well, technically yesterday's) posts, and I am stunned to see this news. Stunned. Adam, I am truly sorry.

Like your other fans here, I don't doubt you'll find a way to make delicious lemonade out of this, but you're surely entitled to take some time to be pissed off, or bummed out, or whatever it is you're feeling. No one wants a decision like this to be thrust upon them, even when a particular someone is smart, capable, ridiculously talented and motivated, not to mention eminently employable. That said, as a few others have noted, I am selfishly kind of excited that you might have even more time to put into UH for a while ... although it's already hard enough for me to keep up with the daily postings, so maybe I should be dreading how much more you'll somehow manage to do here. ;o)

I'll certainly keep an ear to the ground for any work opportunities that might match your talents and interests. I wish you only the best!

It's so great to see Adam's virtual community rally around him. I just want to say, as someone who worked with him for-EVAH and has stayed good friends with him, Adam really is as innovative, generous and witty in person as you get to experience through UH. The ideas he generated to advance his previous employer's Web site were revolutionary/evolutionary. He was also, as other folks can attest to, a completely ego-free mentor, who has given those of us who worked for him tremendous opportunities to flourish. I know whoever snaps him up next will be just as fortunate to have him on their team as we were.

Hope everything works out. It's been great working with you over these many years, starting back in the Fred and Wilma era.

That sucks. To repeat what everyone is saying though, what you've done with U-Hub shows me you're going to land on your feet. I'm not implying it's going to be easy. I really enjoy what you're doing with this site and I have to believe you can do the same somewhere else if that's the direction you choose to go in. Good luck, sir.

Chiming in along with others... Adam is the man when it comes to all things web and all things community. We'll definitely miss him here at NW. I'm sad that I won't be able to bug him for more fixes to my own blog here.

How are the prospects where you are? Have you considered the NY market?

I'm all for Adam becoming fabulously wealthy, but... New York?!?!? Say it ain't so!

Yeah, I don't much like the image of Adam rooting for the Yankees, Mets, Jets, and Knicks.

Edit: looks like Adam and I posted similar comments at the same time.

The Bronx is up and the Battery is down.

But, alas, I realized I wasn't a New Yorker anymore when we tried to get from Brooklyn to the Museum of Natural History and I got us lost on the subway.

Thank you for the kind words, though!

Well, there is quite a tangle of subway lines near Brooklyn Heights! Adam, you don't seem to have the personality of an avid fan, regardless of the town! Too laid back in my estimation! ;- )
I can see you INTERVIEWING fans!

Sorry to hear/read about your lay-off, Adam. Losing a job is never fun. It must be rather rough on you y, and I wish you the best of luck in whatever you decide to do next. Here's holding you and your family to the light during these difficult times. Again--godspeed, and good luck.
