Uber driver's bail increased after ICE says it wants him

State Police report bail for the Uber driver charged with raping a passenger on Storrow Drive early Saturday was increased from $25,000 to $100,000 after ICE signaled it wants to take custody of him because he is a Ugandan citizen. State Police say he is still in their custody and will be arraigned on two counts of rape in Boston Municipal Court tomorrow.

How did channel 5 get a phone interview with man in custody?
I find it highly irregular that channel 5 got a fairly lengthy phone interview with this guy while he's in MSP custody. Are they allowing prisoner press availabilities now? Cell phones are immediately taken at booking and your right to one phone call is from a state phone at the desk. I doubt he had the ch. 5 number memorized, so did MSP take a phone call for him and hand him the phone? Keep in mind, this isn't a prison or house of correction setting where visitors (on a vetted list) are allowed for those serving a sentence. Very strange indeed.
A liberal's dilemma
This ladies and gentlemen is intersectionality. You probably have heard that term thrown around in the last few years by social justice advocates. This is the cross roads of where marginalized groups rights and issues meet. Usually intersectionality is used to unite against the evil straight white man ( which I am not by the way). However this is still a genuine case of intersectionalism. Which issue trumps the other? A woman's right to not be sexually harassed? Or protecting immigrants, legal or illegal, from the authority of Immigration officials?

We want to get rid of ICE because it's unnecessary. CBP is perfectly capable of deporting violent criminals also like this guy, regardless of his status.
What we don't want, is for the *victims* of crimes to be harasses because of their status.

One small thing
CBP's jurisduction is at the border (to 100 miles inland.) They would handle that initial interaction. ICE's jurisduction is further in the process. For example, if you overstayed your visa and didn't honor the ending, you'd be ICE's problem. If, after ICE deported you, you attempted to fly into the US (and it wasn't flagged before you departed the other country) you'd be met by CBP agents who would ensure that you were on the first returning flight.

New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Philadelphia, Washington DC, Dallas, Atlanta- those are just cities off the top of my head that are more than 100 miles from the US border. I wanted to include Phoenix and Houston, but I am not 100% certain of them. I am 90% certain, though.
On the other hand, San Diego, Detroit, Burlington VT, and Buffalo all fall within the area. I've been on the Lake Shore Limited when CBP has conducted checks. Always around Buffalo. In short, I cannot grab a stat out of thin air like you tried to, but the majority of people living in the US live more than 100 miles from the border.

You're forgetting about sea borders - anywhere within 100 miles of the ocean or even the Great Lakes counts as under CBP jurisdiction. Not quite 80%, but it's near 2/3 of the population - see here for more.

I mean, if people really want an extended CBP force, thinking that it would be better than ICE, so be it, but in tracking down the ultimate source of their authority, I don't think it's what ICE haters would want. In fact, I'm kind of glad CBP only really patrols along the land borders (as opposed to what the ACLU thinks they do.)

Meanwhile, over here in Pragmati-stan, we'll let the state police/judicial system try him for the crimes committed under their jurisdiction, let him serve whatever time he is or isn't sentenced to by a jury, and then if ICE is still around , they can try to deport him. We can hold the asshole rapist accountable for his actions AND tell ICE to go piss up a rope, all while upholding the laws of the land.

Emotionally Charged Issue Here But Don't Blame the Victim

The man was not an illegal and had to turn over his passport at the arraignment.
