Two stabbed in Downtown Crossing fight; one has life-threatening injuries

UPDATE: Three arrested.
NBC Boston reports two men were stabbed around 2:30 a.m. on Summer Street in front of Macy's. One suffered minor injuries, the other is now in the hospital with critical injuries.

The homeless at DTC
The homeless spend the night outside Macy's. There will now be cries for the police to evict them. Wouldn't it make more sense and safe to let them stay in the corridor at Downtown crossing station after hours.
Wtf
Seriously, homeless belong in the multiple shelters all over the city, where they get free food, clothes, beds, showers, and fresh bed linens. Not sleeping on the street late at night, getting into trouble, not showering, breeding bed bugs.
More complex than that
Unfortunately, it's complicated. There are not enough shelter beds for everyone who needs one. Also, many homeless feel unsafe at shelters and prefer the streets.
For your last sentence, they're more likely to be victims than perpetrators; they smell like that because they don't get enough food and their bodies are consuming muscle tissue for fuel and producing ketones; and that's not how bedbugs work at all.
Why not just open Macy’s and
Why not just open Macy’s and let them sleep there. It would be way more comfortable.

Downtown Crossing
From 1985 to 1995 I worked at the Swissotel (now Hyatt) thats connected to Macys. When I worked second shift I'd come out at the Chauncy Street employee entrance at midnight and see bums all over the place. More than once I'd dodge bums and floozies who approached me as I ducked into the subway station on my way home to Cambridge (didn't have a car in those days). That was in 1995. I can only imagine its worse 24 years later.

Of course you can only imagine it, because it isn't worse. DTC is safer than it's ever been and there are fewer vagrants hovering around all night, even with the recent influx of drug users.
