Flaherty spurs woman with no car to run for city council

Mary Frances

Mary Church of Jamaica Plain announced today she's running for an at-large city council seat - because of incumbent Councilor Michael Flaherty's comments about cars earlier in the week:

#FiveCarFlaherty's ableist, elitist, clueless comments show how important it is for representatives to live like their constituents. I'm proudly #carfree. I'll fight for bikes, pedestrians & public transit. I'm #NoCarMary.

She adds she is:

Single working mom. Daughter attends Boston Public Schools. MED in Education and don’t own a car and we are invested in public transportation and don’t own five cars.

Flaherty is one of four at-large councilors. He has announced he is running for re-election to the two-year seat.

Has she done anything in the private sector? or is she all invested out in the public sector? She must have got to JP before they stole the real Green Line from the Arborway .

having experience in the "private sector" has amounted to electing ceo's and private equity types.

"...of the people, by the people, for the people..."

I guess my head itched anyway.

That Mary Church does not know how Boston City Council elections work? I mean, technically no one is running against any particular candidate. I mean, the theory so far is that the new candidates coming out of the woodwork are gunning for Pressley's seat, but theoretically, Garrison could be re-elected while Wu could be out of a job.

Otherwise, something tells me that Church is going to be getting votes that would otherwise go to Flaherty. Still, the nature of the game is that one can run to raise awareness of the issues. Sure, she is raising awareness to issues Wu has been working on, but still, I encourage people to run.

Yes I know how city council elections work. I’m not running against one candidate but running for families and constituents in Boston that might not have the luxury of owning five cars.

You missed the point?

So far:

Wu
Anissa
Flaherty
Garrison
Amanda Smart
Julia Mejia
David Halbert
Alehandra St. Guillen
Taushawn Tinsley
Priscilla Flint Banks
Jeff Ross
Mary Church

and there's probably more I missed.

It's early, but so far Wu, Anissa, Mejia, and Tinsley have got my votes.

He's got my vote because he wore a mink coat to Pamela Anderson's roast.

I encourage people to run

.. while at the same time I try to discredit her by saying she's ignorant.

why how magnanimous you are, City Council Elder Waquiot.

For better or worse... Boston is a growing, evolving international city. It's population has grown by 140,000 residents or a 25% increase since Councilor Flaherty took office but it seems his policies are more in line with 1999 Boston and refuses to admit or embrace the fact that we are welcoming new residents every day. Progressive policies and an open mind to major changes are necessary if we're going to continue to thrive as a welcoming, growing, prosperous city for all.

Not that much. 2000 population: 591,500. 2017: 685,000.

And like it or not, lots of these newer, wealthier residents have cars. That's why parking is an issue in places like South Boston.

but what does Mary know about personal car ownership? Is she going to toss all car owners to the wolves.

You run for city council. You cannot run for 2 seats at once. You can run either as a district candidate or as an at-large candidate. Sure, you can pull papers for both, but you can only run as one or the other.
