Driver dies in truck rollover on turnpike near Allston/Cambridge exit

State Police report a, easbound tractor-trailer driver died when his truck rolled over on the westbound side of turnpike around 1:30 p.m.

State Police urge motorists to try to find an alternate route.

I can see that the cab took a horrific hit.

But there wasn't any ice or any thing that could explain this? Prevent this from happening to another truck driver?

If so, there may be footage that explains how this happened.

RIP Driver. Kudos to the truckers on the Eastbound side who blocked the lanes where the cab landed.

Maybe it looks as if he was trying to make a last minute decision to make that exit towards the left side of road, truck probably did not slow down.

There's no left exit there.

There's an exit on the right - if you're headed westbound.

Police say it looks like he was actually headed eastbound.

There is an exit on the left if you're going eastbound, but it's more than quarter mile before where he came to rest. If he lost control because of some missed or abortive turn at that exit, that far back, I don't think momentum would have carried him that far. Maybe on a straightaway, but not on that curve.

One wonders if it was a medical emergency which lead to the crash in the first place. Only luck that the trailer didn't roll onto another car.

Just recently there was a 28-car pile-up in CO caused by a truck with failed brakes, 4 dead. This incident ended much better compared to that.

down a far steeper grade than the Pike WB EB approaching Allston-Brighton. He also passed at least one runaway truck ramp after it was apparent he no longer had control of the truck (as evidenced by witnesses dash cam footage). IMO, it's really unfair to compare the two events.

These areal photos in the immediate aftermath of the crash are not voyeuristic - they will be very valuable for accident reconstruction because they show exactly where everything ended up and can answer questions if the measurements on the ground missed something.

State Police report he was Steling Hullett, 49, of Fort Worth, TX, driving a truck owned by R and D Transportation of Westport, MA. They add:

Preliminary investigation by Massachusetts State Police units indicates that the tractor-trailer was traveling eastbound on the Turnpike (Route 90) in Brighton at the time of the crash. Evidence indicates that the trailer began to sway and the truck moved from the middle lane to the left lane. For reason or reasons still under investigation, the truck then rolled over onto the cement median barrier and continue to travel along it for a significant distance.

The vehicle came to final rest with the cab on the eastbound side and the trailer rolled over onto the westbound lanes prior to Exit 20. The large container being carried on the trailer became dislodged and also came to rest across multiple westbound lanes.

I wonder if the container was loaded improperly - top heavy or load shifting around.
